I One youth seemed more interested in one of the cannons lining the river's edge than Bicentennial Opener in watching the "Continental Volunteers" of Marceline, march down Sherman Ave. to Ft. Leavenworth's historic old Sumner Place earlier this year. The event, which also featured Girl Scout Has presentations, Boy Scout battle enactments and the LHS ROTC honor guard, marked the official beginning of thp Bicentennial ceremonies at Ft. Leayenworth.

Guinn, Department of Tactics, CGSC, is president. Maj. James E. Metelko, also of the department, is secretary- treasurer. (DPFO) was established in 1965; under the Directorate of Management Information Systems (DMIS), Army Combat Developments Command (CD- C), Ft.

Belvoir, Va. The DPFO used an IBM S360- 30 computer at Belvoir until 1987, when support of the Institute of Combined Arms and Support war game activities required the creation of a second Data Processing Installation (DPI) here. This DPI used a Control Data 3300 computer. Headquarters for both DPIs remained at Ft. Belvoir with the Belvoir DPI providing support" to the business automatic data processing (ADP) systems of the Combat Developments Command, while the DPI here supported the scientificTand engineering ADP -systems of the combined arms community.

Workload Increases The workload of the command increased until a larger computer was required in 1972. A Control Data 6500 was acquired and the two DPI's were merged here in 1973. With the reorganization of the Army in 1973, the DPFO became a special activity of under the staff supervision of the DMIS. Currently, the DPFO uses the CDC 6500 computer to support the TRADOC Combat Developments community to include the test boards formerly under Army Materiel Command, the Command and General Staff College, the Army Home Town News Center and other designated customers. This support requires a large teleprocessing network located throughout the United States.

Included in the network are 14 Remote Job Entry and 74 interactive terminals. Besides operation of the computer, the DPFO has the design and programming responsibility for several ADP systems. These sysiems include Table of Organization and Equipment, Basis of Issue Plan, Logi'stics Data. Base, Combat Developments Management Information System, the administrative systems. of the CGSC and the TRADOC test boards.

DPFO Staff DPFO is staffed "by 12 officers, 34 enlisted personnel and 38 full time permanent civilians. These individuals have a varied background which includes expertise in computer science, mathematics, scientific modeling and analytical studies. As the Army turns to automation in many new areas, the need for trained personnel becomes critical. To meet this challenge, the DPFO was given the responsibility of operating an ADP career intern program. This program provides for the recruitment and training of young, mobile individuals.

Currently, there are 10 participants in the program, and it is planned that the total will be increased to 14. These individuals are provided with an intense two-year study plan which includes formal and on; the-job training. The DPFO budget for Fiscal Year 1975 was $1.8 million. This may appear high. However, the costs of comparable commercial services cquld double that amount.

A highlight of this fiscal year was the purchase of the CDC 6500 computer system by the Army. The Fort Has Union From Ft. Leavenworth's Public Affairs Office The Ft.
