Lafayette, now 1-4 and facing a struggle for respectability, gave it on last try. It failed, however, when Jose Serra broke through to drop Jones at the Leopard 38 on fourth and 2.

That was- the third try and third failure for Lafayette on fourth and short yardage. "The defense made the big difference," Gamble said. "I think the thing that pleased me was that after their big touchdown play, we didn't fold. Both the offense and the defensive hung in there. But it was our defense that won the game." Gamble refused to call this game a "make-or-break" one, but admitted that it has to give his team a big psychological lift.

"We've hung in every game and they've all been decided in the last minutes," he said. "Now the breaks have gone our way two weeks in a row. When we get the 'offense unpacked, they'll remember." Winning makes that easy. $1199 (utrtttte 165-15 EASTON, Pa. There's not a lot of mileage left in Harry Gamble's tattered old good luck shoes.

But if things keep going as they did in Penn's 15-14 victory over Lafayette yesterday, Gamble may wind up walking on his socks. "I've gotta wear them one more week," the Penn football coach said after his Quakers came from behind twice to beat the Leopards for the third time in a row and for the 49th time in a series that began in 18S2. Lafayette has won 12, with four ties. As has been the case throughout Penn's season, it was a big play in the' closing stages that determined the outcome. For the second week in a row, things went Penn's way as the Quakers improved their record to 2-3.

Graustein, a 6-foot, 210-pound senior, completed 18 of 27 passes for 154 yards, but it was his last two that got the job done. Five minutes before those two passes, John Orrico's second Lafayette touchdown this one on a school-record 86-yard pass-run from Mark Jones had wiped out a 9-7 Penn lead built by Tim Mazzetti's. field goals of 26, 40 and 54 yards.

"We got behind and had to open up," Graustein said of Penn's sudden reversal of form. "We knew they weren't backing off (covering Penn's deep receivers) so we called that on a whim." With a first down from the Penn 20, Graustein let loose with a bomb. Flanker Tim Kelly ran a fly pattern down the right side, gathered in Graustein's pass and struggled to the, Lafayette 43. On the next play, tight end Jim De-lahanty ran the same route and Graustein hit him at the 10. Dela-hanty battled to the 3 for a first and goal. In the final minute of the second quarter, Dorsett ran 44 yards down the right sideline. Five plays later, he took a screen pass from Yewcic, cut across the field to pick up blockers and ran 40 yards to the end zone. Johnson scored Miami's first touchdown on a 3-yard run in the third quarter. Pitt countered early in the final period when wide receiver Willie Taylor took a reverse handoff from Dorsett and ran 7 yards for a touchdown. Glover's 75-yard scoring pass to Cain closed the gap to 29-12, and Yewcic and Dorsett returned to the game after a short breather.

On their first play back, Dorsett broke loose up the mid'dle for his 53-yard scoring run. lead second-ranked Pittsburgh to a 36-19 victory over Miami, yesterday. Yewcic, a S-foot, 11-inch senior playing without a scholarship, made his first collegiate start in place of Matt Cavanaugh, who suffered a hairline ankle fracture last week. "I didn't find out until or 10 minutes before the game that I was going to start," said Yewcic, nephew of Tom Yewcic who played for the Boston Patriots in the American Football League. "I guess it took a lot of pressure off that way, and it turned out for the best." Pitt, which earlier in the season lost quarterback Robert Haygood with a knee injury, kept the ball mainly on the ground and capitalized on five fumble recoveries and three pass interceptions to raise its record to 6-0. Mfami is 1-4.

Dorsett picked up his yardage on 35 carries and also ran 40 yards for a touchdown after a screen pass from Yewcic. Dorsett's career rushing total now stands at 5,026 yards. He needs 152 yards to break Archie Griffin's all-time major college record of 5,177 yards. Yewcic, a ninth-stringer early in his Pitt career, avoided fumbles and interceptions and hit two of seven tosses for 78 yards. His 40-yard scoring pass to Dorsett came with 7 seconds left to play before halftime and gave Pitt a 22-0 edge.

Dorsett, who had a 3-yard touchdown run in the first period, streaked 53 yards up the middle in the final quarter for his ninth touchdown this season. Miami backup quarterback Frank Glover led a pair of fourth-quarter touchdown drives, one capped by his 75-yard pass to Larry Cain. Pitt, off to its best start since took a 2-0 lead in the opening quarter when defensive back Leroy Fielder tackled Miami quarterback George Mason for a safety. Dorsett ran 3 yards for a touchdown later in the opening quarter after Pitt recovered a fumble by Ken Johnson at the Miami 30-yard line. Fielder's pass interception set up a 25-yard field goal by Carson Long early in the second quarter, and 0 Fj I Jjjr 902Chnut St.
