Sunday, Oct. 31, 1982 Philadelphia Inquirer Woman will 'treasure' ID from husband lost in war By Bob Drogin Inquirer Staff Writer For 17 years, Diane Mossman has -had only cherished photos and proud memories of her husband. Her husband, Lt. j.g. Joseph Mossman, a Navy pilot from Spring-' field, Delaware County, was shot down and killed over Vietnam on Sept.

13, 1965. But no body, identification tags, or crash site were ever -found. On Friday, however, Mossman's military identification cards were returned 1 to Travis Air Force Base in northern California. They were among the "material evidence" from three American servicemen returned by the Vietnamese government, which also sent the actual remains of four other American servicemen. The Pentagon on Oct.

14 announced the return of the remains. The remains were flown from Hawaii by military transport plane on Friday and were carried past a military honor guard and loaded onto four hearses bound for Oakland, officials said. Mossman was shot down while fly. ing a one-man attack jet in a squadron low over a forest near Dong Ho, according to his brother, Richard Mossman of Springfield. Reports conflicted over whether the jet had been hit with a heatseeking missile or had been shot down by small arms fired from the ground.

The Navy first sent a telegram to say that Mossman, 26, was missing in action, but declared the pilot killed in action a day later. The Navy later placed a plaque bearing his name in Arlington National Cemetery. "It's been 17 years of just wondering what really happened," Mrs. Mossman, who lives in Springfield, said in a telephone interview. "They went back and never found his plane or the crash site." Mrs.

Mossman, 41, said she and her three children were convinced that the Vietnamese still hold or know the whereabouts of her husband's remains. "In my heart, and in my mind, I know they have him there," she said. "If they have his cards, they certainly must know where he is." Mrs. Mossman said she would "treasure" her husband's cards, although she said she does not know when she will receive them. "I guess it opens a lot of wounds," she said.

"But at least I feel a lot closer. I really do believe I will find him." Mrs. Mossman said her son Ty, who was 9 months old when her husband died, would join the Marines in February to follow a military career like his father's. "In our eyes, he's our hero," she said softly. "He always has been and I guess he always will be." Mossman was a star athlete at HOME AT LAST, the who died in Vietnam honor guard at Travis remains were released Associated Press remains of four American servicemen are carried from a plane by a military Air Force Base in California.

He was commissioned as a Navy pilot at Pensacola, and was assigned to the aircraft carrier Independence off Vietnam in April 1965. Vietnamese officials originally announced that they had turned over five sets of remains to U.S. officials in Hanoi. But defense officials said forensic scientists had determined that the remains, mostly bones, belonged to four American Navy and Air Force personnel, not five. The four were identified as: Air Force Maj.

Robert D. Trier, who was shot down over North Vietnam on Dec. 20, 1965. His widow is living in Lauderdale- Fla. Navy Ensign Donald P.

Frye, lost June 19, 1967, over North Vietnam. Frye, who was single, is survived by parents living in Los Angeles. Navy Petty Officer William B. Jackson, lost June 19, 1967, over, North Vietnam. His widow lives in Imperial Beach, Calif.

Short credit aggravating E. German food shortage Associated Press LONDON East Germany is undergoing its worst shortage of meat, sausage and other basic foodstuffs since emerging from the ashes of World War II, when there was near starvation, the Financial Times reported last week. Quoting Western agricultural experts in East Berlin, the British business daily said the cutbacks in supplies were largely the result of a 15 percent drop in fodder imports from the United States, caused by a lack of credit. At the same time, the report said, the Soviet Union had reduced by 10 percent the amount of fuel oil it was delivering to East Germany this year. It said that the resulting shortfall in diesel oil had resulted in cutbacks in the use of trucks and railroads to transport agricultural products and that this had led to widespread delays and spoiling of perishables.

The Financial Times said the food situation was worst outside the main industrial cities, which received priority supplies, but that even in those cities meat often was unavailable and butter was in short supply. It said that in the less industrialized northern sector of East Germany, meat. and sausage deliveries had been cut to one day a week and butter often was limited. Throughout the country, basic foods such as rice, cooking oil, noodles, oatmeal and baby food often were unavailable, it said. The newspaper reported that in Goerlitz, at the border with Poland, shops were allowing residents to buy only half a loaf of bread per customer; in Dresden the ration was one loaf per customer.

The Financial Times quoted the Western agricultural experts as saying that East Germany's problems had been compounded by an epidemic of hoof-and-mouth disease among livestock in the north earlier this year. T.H. Burk, businessman Thomas H. Burk, 82, a retired businessman whose life spanned several careers, died Thursday at West Jersey Hospital in Voorhees. He lived in Cherry Hill.

At different times from the 1920s to the 1950s Mr. Burk was a poet, song. writer, theatrical agent, newspaperman, longshoreman, union leader, professional fund-raiser and owner of a business distributing horse-racing paraphernalia. Two of his songs, "Even Though" and "Honey, I'm in Love with You," were performed widely in the 1920s. Mr.

Burk owned a small nightclub in Coney Island, N.Y., for a time and was an agent for dancer and filmmaker Bill Taylor. In the 1930s, Mr. Burk reviewed Broadway shows and wrote financial news for the Brooklyn Times-Union, a now-defunct newspaper where he was among the first newspapermen in the nation to become a member of the Newspaper Guild. He later worked as a fund-raiser in charitable campaigns for Catholic schools and hospitals, mostly in Ohio. During World War II, he was hired by the Army to help direct war shipping on seven Brooklyn piers.

1 After the war, he was elected to the executive board of Local 975 of the Checkers Union on the New York waterfront. In the 1950s he founded Promosales Inc. in Cherry Hill, a nationwide distributor of horse racing materials. Mr. Burk lived in Cherry Hill from 1955.

He is survived by his wife, Jane; a son, Donald; three grandchildren, and two sisters. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Harleigh Cemetery in Camden. Friends will meet at 9:30 a.m. at the Stretch Evans Funeral Home, Haddonfield.
