Ruecius, student at Ursinus College, where he was studying for the Lutheran ministry, died yesterday in Montgomery Hospital, of a heart ailment. He was 20. A 1950 graduate of Norristown High School, he was active in Grace Lutheran Church affairs. His home was at 820 W.

Main Norristown. Surviving are his mother and father, Frederick E. and Mildred Pugh Ruecius; a brother, Frederick and his grandmothers, Mrs. Wilhelmina Ruecius, of Winnipeg, Canada, and Mrs. Ida M.

Pugh, of Norristown. Funeral services win be held at 2 P. M. Wednesday at the "Boyd Funeral Home, 718 Swede Norristown. Burial will be in Valley Forge Gardens.

Samuel Gordon, Scientist, Dies Samuel G. Gordon, former as sistant curator at the Academy of Natural Sciences here, collapsed and died yesterday in Cincinnati, O. He was 54. Mr. Gordon, who had been as sociated with the academy for 30 years, left that institution in 1950 to join the Atomic Energy Commis sion in scientific research.

He was considered one of the world's out standing mineralogists. He had gone to Cincinnati only a week previously and was engaged in highly secret work for the AEC at the General Electric jet en gine plant at-Lockland, near that city. Previously, he had been con nected with the commission's atomic energy plant at Oak Ridge, Tenn. ATTENDED U. OF P.

Reports from the Ohio city said Mr. Gordon was preparing to move into an apartment in the Mount Lookout section there when he was stricken. He was pronounced dead at a hospital. A native of Philadelphia, he attended the University of Pennsyl vania. As associate curator in the department of mineralogy at the Academy of Natural Sciences, and curator of its Vaux Collections, he had traveled widely on field expeditions which furnished that institution with many choice and valuaole specimens.

During the Second World War he was granted a leave of absence to work with the U. S. Army in remedying the serious shortage of quartz crystals needed for the manufacture of radio and other electronic equipment. UNDERWENT OPERATION Three weeks ago Mr. Gordon returned to this city from the Los Alamos atomic laboratories, where he had been stationed for the past year, to undergo an operation of undisclosed nature at Jeanes Hospital, Fox Chase.

He left here directly lor Cincinnnati to take up his new post. He is survived by his wife. Bertha, for many years a member of the staff of the Free Library at Logan Circle, and by a brother and two sisters. The body is being returned to this city for burial. Robert Leroy Hallett, 70. consulting mining and industrial engineer, who formerly was chief chemist for the National Lead in Brooklyn, N.

Funeral services for John Lawrence, of Elk Mills, a native of Philadelphia, were held today. Mr. Lawrence, a graduate of the Philadelphia Tex tile School of Design, died at his home Wednesday. He was 79. Mr.

Death was caused by a coronary oc-clusion. He had a heart ailment for some time. Mr. Lewis was a member of the law firm of Mac Coy, Evans and Lewis. He was the first editor of the Penn sylvania Bar HIFFEN LEWIS Assoc! ation Quarterly and continued to serve in that capacity for many years.

More recently he was one ot the principals in the test suit that Killed Pennsylvania's short-lived community uroDerty law. The State Su preme Court declared the measure unconstitutional. Bom in Philadelphia, the son of Lawrence and Dora Kelly Lewis, he was educated at the old Delancey School and the University of Pennsylvania. He taugh Latin and "Greek in California before entering the law office of George Wharton Pepper in 1910. HELPED DRAFT CHARTER He assisted in the work of the Constitutional Committee of 1320 and was associated with the drafting of a new city charter in 1937.

From 1932 to 1935 he served as a special deputy attorney general in charge of the legal work for closed banks. He also was a member of the advisory committee which drafted new laws pertaining to decedents' estates and trusts. Eleven years ago he was proposed for the Superior Court. A Democrat, he also had been proposed for a Federal judgeship. Mr.

Lewis was a member of the American, Pennsylvania and Philadelphia Bar Associations and at one time was chairman of the board of governors of the local bar association. He also was a member of the American Law Institute and a member of the Order of the Coif. At the time of his death he was serving as chairman of the Regional Loyalty Beard, a director of the Institute of State and Local Government at the of Pennsylvania and a director of the Fellowship Commission. TRIBUTE BY MAYOR CLARK Mayor Joseph S. Clark, in naming him the senior member of the new Civil Service Commission, with a term to run for six years, recognized Mr.

Lewis' past service as chairman of the commission that organized the Civil Service system in the State Department of Public Assistance. At that time the Mayor said "Mr. Lewis' many years of serv ice in the field of personnel administration and his standing and reputation in the community eminently qualify him for the very difficult task of supervising the transition from the spoils' to the 'merit' system." Mr Lewis is survived by his wife, the former Mary Porcher, a novelist who writes under the name of Mary Fanning Wickham, and three daughters: Mrs. Hunter Moss and Mrs. J.

William Townsend, both of Baltimore, and Mrs. Anderson Page, of this city. Funeral services will be held at 4 P. M. tomorrow in St.

23, 7144 Glenlock St. If "Help the Scouts to Help the Handicapped" is the slogan adopted by Boy and Girl Scouts in Philadel phia and Delaware counties in their efforts to help collect 60,000 bags full or clothing, bedding, toys and house hold articles on behalf of Goodwill Industries in the nest three weeks. More than 8000 Philadelphia Girl Scouts and hundreds of others throughout Delaware county began yesterday distributing the 60,000 ten-pound bags bearing their slogan to housewives, who promised to fill tnem by June 7. The Girl Scouts expect to com' plete their part of the cooperative effort by Friday. Later, Boy Scouts will collect the filled bags and the donated material will be used by Goodwill Industries in the training and employment of handicapped persons.

He was 88. Major Gardner, who lived with a daughter, Mrs. Catharine G. Carroll, at 508 Woodland court, Wayne, Pa.

was a native of York Springs, Pa. He was one of the outstanding figures in the organization of the mintia and served as finance officer of the Officers Reserve Corps and the 62d Cavalry He formerly was a vice president of the Mutual Trust Co. and was treasurer of the Commercial Museum, the Philadelphia Chapter cf the Reserve Officers Association of the United States and the Army and Navy Club. He also was a member of the Union League, Philadelphia Country Club, Penn Club, Historical Society of Pennsylvania, Military Order of Foreign Wars, Pennsylvania Society of Sons of the Revolution, St. Andrew's Society, Presbyterian Social Union and the Historical Society of Valley Forge.

He also is survived by his wife, Mrs. Stella Bussier Gardner, and another daughter, Mrs. N. W. Harkness Haupt, of Summit, N.

J. Funeral services will be held at 3 P. M. Tues day in Washington Memorial Chap el. Valley Forge.
