10-D Wednesday. June 16. 1982 Philadelphia Inquirer Channel 29 will televise Phillies games beginning next seasonal By Bill Collins Inquirer Stall Writer The big Philadelphia television sports shuffle is two-thirds complete. The Phillies will move from WPHL (Channel 17) to WTAF (Channel 29) next season, both TV stations announced late yesterday afternoon. At the same time, Channel 17 announced that it had filled the sports gapjeft by the departure of the lies by acquiring rights to telecast the regular -season road games of the National Basketball Association (NBA) 76ers through the 1984-85 season.

The Sixers' contract with WKBS (Channel 48) ran out at the end of last season, and the move had been all but official for several weeks. Channel 48, meanwhile, is expect- biggest attractions of the 1982-83 season: NCAA finalist Georgetown at Villanova. Tbe Phillies' switch had been expected, but not so soon. The baseball club still had a year to go in its contract with Channel 17, although the move would have been inevitable in 1984 because Taft Broadcasting which owns Channel 29, is also part owner of the Phillies. Taft reportedly put more than $15 million into the deal in which a group headed by4.Bill Giles, now Phillies president, bought the team from Ruly Carpenter after the 1981 season.

Rather than have a competing station carry the Phillies through 1983, Channel 29 had been negotiating for more than a month to buy out the last year of the Channel 17 contract. Consummation of the agreement was announced by Channel 29 station manager Randy Smith at 4 p.m. yesterday and confirmed 'by Gene McCurdy, Channel 17's president and general manager. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed. The big question is: Who will do the broadcasting for both the Phillies and the Sixers? The Phillies games are being covered this season by the veteran crew of Rich Ashburn, Harry Kalas, Andy Musser, Tim McCarver and Chris Wheeler.

McCarver and Wheeler are Phillies employees, but play-by-play men Ashburn, Kalas and Musser have been paid by Channel 17. Channel 29's Smith said that changes in the broadcasting booth are possible. He said he has "talked to a couple of the broadcasters," but that no serious discussions have been held with any of them. The 76ers games were broadcast last season mostly by Musser and former Sixer star Doug Collins, who has since accepted a job as assistant coach at Arizona State University. A spokesman at Channel 17 said, "We're listening to a couple of people and should have some sort of announcement in the next few days." The spokesman also Channel 17 would have a postgame, as well as a pregame show sandwiching the basketball games.

"We, intend to provide more background on the opponents, and a little more in-depth coverage of the Sixers than Channel 48 gave them," he said. The good die young at least nz TV. One recent result of a special Arbitron "qualitative ratings stutJy" conducted in November for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting'is a list of the 10 programs viewers thought were most entertaining. The list: "Great Performances" (PBS), "M'A'S'H" (CBS), "Odyssey" (PBS), "WKRP in Cincinnati" (CBS), "Dif-f'rent Strokes" (NBC), "Hill Street Blues" (NBC), "Wild, Wild World of Animals" (syndicated), "Masterpiece Theater" (PBS), "Barbara Mandrell and the Mandrell Sisters" (NBC) and "Barney Miller" (ABC). By the time the results of the suY-' vey reached us, only three of the seven commercial TV programs that made the list, "M'A'S'H," "Strokes" and "Blues," remained.
