Net profits and recoveries on sales of securities of $52,092 as against $157,069 in 1951 brought total net profits for 1952 to as compared with $1,230,533 the previous year. Mitchell and Sawin remarked that while gross operating 'earnings increased substantially, "due primarily to the rise in volume of loans and the higher level of interest rates," operating expeness were also sharply higher. DEPOSITS AT PEAK Deposits increased 5.6 to new all-time high of $149,821,820 at year-end. Loans and discounts increased to $5687,594 from $44,291,427. Trust commissions, the report said, were moderately lower than a year earlier due to "the lesser amount of terminal principal commissions received, which necessarily vary from year to year." Madeira reported that Land Title Bank's deposits of $83,912,500 were the greatest at any year-end In the history of the bank.

Net operating income of $1,433,833 before Federal income taxes as compared with in 1951 and $1,216,437 in 1950 was the largest since the late 1920s. Net operating income last year of $940,833, or $5.88 a share, as against $856,908, or $5.35 a share, in 1951, he said was the largest net operating income after taxes in many years and represented a net profit of 8.79 on the bank's capital funds. Non-operating profits and recoveries of $125,802 brought the 1952 total net profits to $1,066,635, or $6.66 a share, as compared with $1,095,892 or $6.85 a share, the previous year.
