i 10-C Friday. Nov. 5. 1982 Philadelphia Inquirer" Death Notices Death Notices McFADDEN DUNN 7 -Mi- i it 7 4 If i fill! Associated Press A spokesman for Northern Natural Gas Co. said workers were laying drainage tile for the farm when the 20-inch line was broken.

The fire burned itself out after valves were closed. FIVE PEOPLE DIED in the explosion that touched off this inferno yesterday after a backhoe ruptured a natural gas pipeline on a farm near the east-central Iowa town of Hudson. Obituaries Ray L. Fisher, 98, Ray Fisher, 95, a major league pitcher who became one of the nation's finest coaches, died Wednesday in Ann Arbor, Mich. Mr.

Fisher, who pitched for the New York Yankees and the Cincinnati Reds, went to the big leagues in 1910 and promptly found himself working against men who were already baseball legends, men like Christy Mathewson and Ty Cobb. He survived, he said, because he followed the advice given him in the days when he was fresh out of Hartford in the old Connecticut League and found himself playing at the Polo Grounds. One of the old hands advised him, "Calm down, keep your mouth shut and your eyes open." That advice, he said, kept him alive and well for a dozen years on the diamond. It was advice he passed along after the major leagues to every player that he coached during his 38 years with the University of Michigan's vv T. CRAFT OF ERDENHEIM, baseball both the Yankees and the Reds. He began his career in 1908 in Hartford and went to New York for the 1910 season. He joined Cincinnati in 1919, following time out in 1918 for Air Corps service in World War I. He stayed with the Reds through 1920, compiling a 97-93 record and a career earned-run average of 2.82. Last August, Mr.

Fisher was the guest of honor at the Yankee's Old-Timers' Day in New York. He received two standing ovations from the crowd in Yankee Stadium. But his most spectacular game wasn't for the Yankees. It came in 1919 in play for the Reds. For 16 long innings in the first game of an Aug.

27 doubleheader against the Giants, he and Artie Nehf were locked in a pitchers' duel. The score was 44 going into the 17th inning when he found himself pitching to Larry Doyle, the Giants' sec-ond baseman. into the war. He was wounded when his plane was shot down. Captured, he was sent to a German prison camp.

He had company there: Losses on the raid amounted to 20 percent of the attacking force. He spent 16 months behind barbed wire. He lost 50 pounds, read 320 books and learned to speak Russian in anticipation of liberation by Soviet forces. His guess was right. When the Red Army rolled over Germany, he served as liaison officer.

He wrote a book, Time Out, about his experiences as a POW. He founded San Francisco magazine in 1963 and sold it eight years later. He retained an active interest in San Diego magazine, which he founded more than 20 years ago. In addition to his West Coast businesses, he owned the Red Fox Tavern in Middleburg, and he was completing an autobiography, The Innocent Dessert, when he died. Also surviving are four sons, two daughters, a stepson and his sister.

Services were to be arranged. his home in Chestnut Hill. He was a graduate of Atlanta Southern Dental College and opened a practice in Chestnut Hill in 1923, maintaining it until 1975 when he retired. He was a member of the Chestnut Hill Hospital staff for 43 years and former chief of the dental department. Survivors: wife, Ethel; a daughter, Ann Showacre, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services: Mass of Christian Burial, 10 a.m. Friday, Our Mother of Consolation Church. Dennis W. Clark, 72, a retired Du Pont Co. engineer, died Wednesday at Germantown Hospital.

A former resident of Millington, he lived in the Germantown area. Survivors: wife, Vermadella; stepdaughters, Caroline Alexander, Eleanor Scott, Sally Ann Fisher and Nancy Parker; a grandchild, four brothers and five sisters. Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, John Wesley United Methodist Church, Millington. veteran With two men on, Doyle did it.

He hit a double that sent the pair scrambling home and the game ended 6-4. As Michigan coach, from 1921 until 1958, his teams won 14 Big Ten titles and an NCAA championship in 1953, when Fisher was named college baseball's Coach of the Year. His career coaching record was 637-294-8, a winning percentage of .687, and 19 of his players went on to compete in the major leagues. Death Notices AM0 MARY on Nov. 2, 19(2.
