Veron icu, not quite eight years old as yet took up the task of mothering the futn ily and caring for her mother, in addi tion to attending school.

The twins were growing huskier and happier. They seemed to mock, unconsciously, the mother, who grew weaker and sicker. Then a few weeks ago the heaviest blow of all fell upon Wlosnk. The mother, he was informed, must go to a hospital. Then she died.

There was only one thing to do seek refuge with his sister for a little while. He didn't wish to be a burden, just until he could get a fresh hold on thing again. For months then the Oxford and Lower Dublin Poor Board had been assisting ihe family with money weekly. Thef also furnished ench of the twins with a quart of milk daily. And the twins thrived on it! of the Poor Board, advised the fill her to seek help at the Juvenile Court. They in turn, referred him to the Catholic Protectors, who promised to investigate the circumstances. Early this wek the fnther evolved the idea of seeking a home for the twins. He talked it over with his slitter. She would be glad to keep the brood together, but she worked; she was not very strong, but she would mother her namesake Matilda, the 4-yenr-old daughter.

"How I hale to think of giving them up," Wlosnk said yesterday. "They arc so wonderful. Hut what am I to do? If they do not receive proper care, they might grow sickly. They might become victims of malnutrition or something equally as bad. "Aud they do need a mother, so badly.

Thev are good boys." he added villi pride and a catch in his voice; "mighty good boys." Andrew and Frank, at the other end of the room, chuckled at something which had amused them. Yes, life was funny to them. Hnw i lose were you to them when thev tinned off? A. I should judge 75. tari feet.

I was getting ready The father's story is one of bitter struggle against adversity a battle with life In which he has lost consistently until, disheartened, he has decided to seek a home for the twin boys. Four years ago he, his wife whom he bad married twelve years ago, and the family as it then was, moved to Philadelphia from Detroit. It was the old story of seeking the pot of gold at the end of the rninUiw. The family, never actually "well to do," Kettlcd on the "Filbert Farm." in Rockledge, near Fox CI111.se, and there the father took up his old fight to improve conditions. Worked as Carpenter For three years he worked at his trade, carpentering.

Thitigs looked brighter, much brighter, here. Again, leering fate, which had dogged his footsteps, struck at him. The force at his place of employment had been reduced aud be as "laid off." Simultaneously, his wife was stricken with the malady which was to cause her death a vear later and leave him with six children, motherless, helpless, pitiful. Then began for Wlosnk a year almost of unaccountable trial and anguish. "Odd jolis." those Insinuating means of livelihood, were his lot.

Practically from hand to mouth tho family lived in the house at the "farm." It wasn't a very good house, but it did provide a roof over their heads and they were together. Q. Yes, Didn't you feel you ought to report what you knew about this affair? A 1 did. Q. Why didn't you do it? A. That is the reason I did it.

Sought to Avoid Trial Q. And you didn't feel that, though, until last Tuesday? A. Sure, I felt that way. I didn't want to get mixed up in it before. Q.

Well, would there have been any There have been war pictures and more war pictures but never has the pictured drama of that great struggle across the water been brought home so trippingly to veterans nnd those who "only waited nnd wept" as it was Inst night in "Wings," which opened at the Aldine Thentre. The aviator the ace the blue devil of the blue sky came in for his share of glory during the war. but it was a glory too high above the heads of most, both literally and metaphorically, for its full significance to be home in upon the soldier and layman. Last night in a picture possessing'some of the most remarkable photography ever seen upon the silver screen, the glory of the aviator was left no longer a remote shadow. Lifted upon wings of daring, wings of victory, and wings of death, the theme of the picture made the patriotism and enthusiasm of the audience soar to heights yet unsurpassed by any other of the long and Bonievvhat distinguished line of war movies.

Audience Rides In Air Two things contributed to this unusual success of "Wings." First it would seem that the photography itself should be the leader of the duet of reasons. And yet had it not been for the flying of the actors the photography would never have been possible. There, while a unique sound-amplifying arrangement makes the looming of giant plnnes crescendo and diminuendo in time to the souring and dipping of battalions of airplanes, air battles are fought and the audience rides with the fighters, looks into the tense faces of the lone airmen, hurtles through space as they fail, or soars above the clouds as they succeed in their daring. The story which has originality and compelling interest to recommend it is forgotten as the spectator, clenching his hands, relives those great victories lost nnd won "on the wing." Charles Rogers and Richard Arlen, who share joint honors for their reniarknlile acting nnd their more remarkable flying, ascend to the place of genuine heroes from the mere rank of the actor. It took courage to drive planes as these men have done even though "it is only a movie." Clara Bow, that vivacious star of "It," is not "the girl," but she is the heroine, and a real one.
