Simon Gendler was born in 1954 in Tomsk, a small town in the center of Siberia, where his father was exiled. In 1975, Gendler moved to Moscow, where he met and became friends with artists representing the so-called "non-conformistic" movement that is illegal in Russia.

Under permanent anxiety come through in his paintings, which contain a feeling of despair, lassitude and melancholy and express fear, withdrawal and preoccupation with inner drama. A reception for the artist will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m.

Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to noon on Friday, or by appointment. For information, call (714) 785-2170. the influence of his new friends, he began to study art. Gendler moved to Vilnius in 1978, where he painted and studied art until his emigration in 1980.

He continued his study of art first at the University of California, Los Angeles, and then at Otis Art Institute of Parsons School of Design. The greatest influence on the artist were his years in Siberia, a place of political exile. Of 2,000 Jews living in Tomsk, 90 were exiled in Siberia from central and western parts of Russia. Hayes, 27, received a bachelor of science degree in physical education from California State University, San Jose, in 1982. Hayes comes to UCR with four years intercollegiate experience and three years semi-professional ball in Switzerland and Italy. She has also coached at various volleyball camps, including one sponsored by UCLA, the United States Volleyball Assn. and San Bernardino Valley College. Hayes joins head volleyball coach Sue Gozansky, who begins her sixteenth year at the helm of the UCR program.

The 1985-86 track team will be the first to use the all-weather running surface currently being installed on the UCR track. The new track was a gift from chemistry alumnus Ransome Wyman, class of '62, who invented the polyurethane substance on his kitchen stove. The substance, called Rub-berron," is applied in a similar method to that of asphalt and cures to a tough "self-healing" surface. The new surface, to be ready for the spring track season, will enable UCR to host national championship meets. Sales office open daily, except Wednesday and Thursday, 10 a.m.
