NOTES TIio loss by fire yesterday of Empire Hall demoralized class work for the afternoon, some of them losing their personal effects, still by the liberal generosity of Chillicothe's citizens one was well cared for before night. Our sincere thanks are extended those who so promptly responded to our call 1'or rooms. Many more places were offered than were needed. Miss Leona Mann returned yesterday from a two week's visit with home folks at Jamesport. Hay Myers of La Plata was here yesterday the guest of Marion E.

Evans, parents of Mrs. Clayton who have made Chillicothe their home for the past year. left Tuesday for Oklahoma. Herbert Wood of Eldorado Springs enrolled with us yesterday for the telegraphy course. Fred Fitzpatrick left Tuesday night for Brook field in response to a call from the Burlington for a stenographer.

James May has returned from a visit to his brother in Texas. Nova Atkins, who is quite ill of lung trouble, is about the same. Miss Eugenia Cox is out of school on account of having the mumps. There was a very beautiful and touching memorial service at Union church Sunday morning in honor of T. C.

Wilhite, whose demise occurre-1 a few weeks ago. Mr. Wilhite was clerk of Union church and teacher of one of the bible classes for years, and he will be sadly missed there. Mr. Buckley of Chillicothe was taken suddenly ill Wednesday at the hpme of his daughter, Mrs.

George Engert. Dr. Gordon was summoned and pronounced his illness a severe attack of la grippe. George Knaus of Utica is visiting his daughter, Mrs. Everett Harvey of Chula.

Daugherty is said by the police to have been a member of the Dalton gang that operated in Kansas and Oklahoma and later was with the Doolin gang of robbers.

He was convicted of killing a member of a posse that battled with the Doolin gang after a bank robbery and sentenced to fifty years in the Oklahoma tiary. It was called up by Senator Goodsou of Macon. who explained its provisions briefly. He said it would probably produce in the neighborhood of $500,000 of revenue yearly. It imposes an annual tax of 1-2 cent a gallon on "near-beer" drinks. 21-2 cents per gallon on syrups from which drinks are manufactured and 5 cents a gallon on gelatius.
