Benton MacKaye, who conceived the idea of the Appalachian Trail, died at his home Thursday.

He was 96. C. Muldowney John J. Muldowney, 82, a retired Philadelphia policeman, died Wednesday at lower Bucks County Hospital. He lived at 534 Dehaven Penndcl. A native of County Mayo, Ireland, Mr. Muldowney came to Philadelphia about 1912.

He was appointed a policeman here in 1923 and served for 29 years before retiring. He was an army veteran of World War I and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 676. Surviving are his wife, the former Delia Connors; four sons, John, James, William and Joseph, and six grandchildren. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m.

Hardy, 67, a Philadelphia dermatologist for more than 40 years, died yesterday at tne Sacned Heart Home, 1315 W. Hunting Park Ave. She lived at 519 King St, in Germantown. Semiretired, for the past two years, Dr. Hardy maintained an office at 1930 Rittenhouse Square.

Born in Niagara Falls, N.Y., she graduated from the Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1932. In the next 40 years she served on the staffs of Philadelphia General Hospital, Wills Eye Hospital, Methodist Hospital, Women's Medical College Hospital and the now-defunct Women's Hospital of West Philadelphia. She also was an employe of the medical services department of the Philadelphia Board of Education for 20 years. Dr. Hardy was a member of the Philadelphia Dermatologist Society, the American Academy of Dermatology, the Pennsylvania Medical Society, the Philadelphia County Medical Society and the American Medical Association.

Father Diehl, born in Philadelphia, was a 1925 graduate of the Holy Ghost Prep School in Cornwells Heights, which at that time prepared young men for the seminary. He was ordained a priest in 1930, after graduating from St. Mary's Seminary in Norwalk, Conn. He served parishes in Detroit, Pittsburgh, Tucson, Virginia and Washington, D. before moving to Sarasota a year ago.

He is survived by two brothers, Frank, of Philadelphia, and Paul, of Miami. A funeral Mass will be offered at 3 nm. Tuesday in the Chapel of Holy Ghost Prep, 2439 Bristol Pike, Corn-wells Heights. Burial will be in the school cemetery. William J.

Toy William J. Toy, 76, a retired construction superintendent, died Tuesday at Bryn Mawr Hospital. He lived at 970 MacDade Yeadon. Mr. Toy, who had been in construction work for about 30 years, retired in 1963 after seven years as a construction superintendent for Modjeski and Masters, a Harrisburg engineering form.

He served as a supply sergeant with the Army's28th Division in France during World War I. He was a member of American Legion Post 179 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 743, both in Yeadon, and a Mason. Surviving are his wife, the former Lucy Kernaghan; a daughter, Mrs. Evelvn Mundv: a brother: a sister; two grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren. Burial will be private.

Elizabeth Daily Elizabeth G. Daily, 84, died Thursday at her home at 12053 Waldemire Place. Before moving to the far Northeast section of the city 12 years ago, Miss Daily had lived for more than 50 years in the Northwest section.
