Thursday, Dec. 11, 1975 Philadelphia Inquirer Obituaries William Wellman, Flying Ace, Director of Wel Films Associated Press LOS ANGELES William Wellman, the hard-driving director of 82 motion pictures, died Tuesday at his home here. He was 79. He had been seriously ill for three months. A former professional hockey player, World War I flying ace and barnstorming pilot, Wellman made his mark on Hollywood as indelibly as he had in his other endeavors.

His directing credits include the 1927 classic "Wings," the original version of "Beau Geste," and "Public Enemy," the movie that made James Cagney a star. Other films he directed were original "A Star Is Born," "The OxBow Incident" and "The High and the Mighty." Mr. Wellman's son, Bill said services will be private and that, as his father requested, his ashes will WILLIAM WELLMAN be scattered in the air. Nicknamed "Wild Bill" by his film ing to break out of a beachhead," associates, Mr. Wellman was known that he was "hard as nails." as a hard-driving perfectionist.

She snatched the child from the crib and called an ambulance. The vehicle braked to a stop in front of the Bhaula home at 7:03 p.m. Tuesday night, picked up the baby and then took off toward Hillingdon Hospital a mile away. A worried Mrs.

Bhaula followed in a police car. On the why, the ambulance's radio controller said Hillingdon would not take the baby. A doctors' strike had uled out emergency cases. Siren screaming, the ambulance changed course for Mount Vernon Hospital, another five miles away. But again the controller said no go.

Mount Vernon also refused to treat the child. The vehicle then headed for Wexham Park Hospital, 11 miles from the Bhaula home. The ambulance arrived at 7:20 p.m. Doctors pronounced the baby dead of respiratory failure. Interns are striking across the country for more overtime pay in a serious threat to Britain's 27-year-old system of socialized medicine.

Raymond Sonneborn Raymond R. Sonneborn, 83, a retired automobile dealer, died Monday in the White Billet Nursing Home, "latboro. He formerly lived at 306 Woods North Woods, Montgomery County. Mr. Sonneborn retired in 1949 after as vice president and a many years partner of the Anders and Jervis Chevrolet Motor formerly in the 1500 block of North Broad Street.

He was a past president of the Philadelphia Automobile Trade Association and was a member of the Manufacturers Golf and Country Club id the Skytop Country Club. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Janet Mattis; a grandchild and two great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 10 a.m. today at the Presbyterian Church of Chestnut Hill, 8855 Germantown Ave.

Entombment will be in Whitemarsh Memorial Park. George F. Foering George F. Foering, 70, a former home fuel deliveryman, died. Saturday at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

He lived at 134 Watkin Woodbury, N. J. Until two years ago he had lived for many years in the 1900 block of N. Hancock Street here. Mr.

Foering retired in 1969 as an employe of the Windsor Oil formerly i in the 800 block of N. 21st Street. He was an honorary life member of the Franklinville Quartette Club. Surviving are his wife, the former Grace M. Clark; a son, Anthony and a sister.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today at Incarnation of Our Lord Church, Fifth Street and Lindley, Avenue. Burial will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Deaths Elsewhere Joao Augusto de Araujo Castro, 56, Brazilian ambassador to the United States, died at his desk in Washington Tuesday of an apparent heart attack. A former foreign minister of Brazil and highly regarded for his intellect, he was a friend of Secretary of State Henry A.

Kissinger and the two Ind many lively policy debates, frequently from opposite viewpoints. Ironically, the man Ambassador Araujo Castro came to Washington in 1971 to succeed, Ambassador Mozart Valenti, died of a heart attack here on the same date, Dec. 9, in 1970. Dr. James C.

Wellman reportedly was unhappy with his pilots and decided to demonstrate. He put a through a series of daredevil stunts, then crashed. "Like that!" he said as he stepped from the wrecked craft. Mr. Wellman quit school to play hockey, then in World War I joined the French Lafayette Flying Corps.

At 21, he was flying Nieuports before the United States entered the war. He switched to the Lafayette Escadrille and became an ace after the United States joined the fighting. After the war, he was a walking barnstormer and gave flying lessons. His flying helped him break into the movies. He had met actor Douglas Fairbanks Sr.

and sometimes landed his plane on Fairbanks' Hollywood and polo field. Mr. Wellman had four unsuccessthe ful marriages. He married actress but Dorothy Coonan in 1933. She and see seven children survive.

Rufus C. Rudisill, 76, Executive Rufus C. Rudisill. 76, retired executive of the Mobil Oil died yesterday in his home at the Beaver Hill Apartments, Jenkintown. Mr.

Rudisill retired in 1964 as national director of the tires, batteries and accessories department of Mobil, with which he had been associated for 19 years. He was a 1922 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and during World War II, served as assistant director and then director of maritime shipping for the Port of Philadelphia. In that post he succeeded Navy Capt. Robert P.

Guiler who had been appointed port director when the port was placed directly under Navy control immediately after this country entered the war. Mr. Rudisill is survived by his wife, the former Dorothy Grieb; two sons, Rufus C. Jr. and Brantly; a daughter, Mrs.

Elizabeth Berner; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Janet Nace, and five grandchildren. Services will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Helweg Funeral Home, 463 York Jenkintown. Burial will be in George Washington Memorial Park.

William C. Jaynes William C. Jaynes 3d, 56, a postal clerk at the Fairhill post office branch, Fairhill Street and Lehigh Avenue, died Monday at the home of his mother, Mrs. Maria Jaynes, at 400 N. 52d St.

He had been employed by the Postal Service since 1952. Mr. Jaynes was senior past master of Christian Lodge No. 12, Prince Hall Masons, and past grand senior deacon of Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania. Mr. Tashjian retired in 1961 as commercial rate supervisor with Bell's headquarters rate staff. He had been employed by the company for 40 years. Surviving are his wife, the former Anna L. Mahmarian; a son, Dr.

Maddock, 63, a SEPTA foreman, died Tuesday at the 69th Street Terminal, apparently of a heart attack. He lived at 4043 St. Mr. Maddock was general foreman of rolling stock at the terminal. He had been a foreman for the last 35 years, and started working for the Philadelphia Transportation Co.

(PTC), the forerunner of SEPTA, in 1933. Surviving are his wife, the former Josephine Dunbar; three sons, Alvin, Harvey and Joseph; three brothers; a sister and five grandchildren. The slowdown many hospitals onto "emergencies only" status. Some have altogether. Most London hospitals are turning away thousands of non-emergency patients every day, leaving them to join awaiting an estimated treatment 600.000 in 00.000 Nationals Health Service hospitals. "This situation could have been avoided if the hospitals had been working normally," commented Nigel Salt, 30, one of the ambulance men who tried mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and heart massage to save the child. The death, he declared, was "inevitable" because of the slowdown.

Authorities ordered an investigation into the death of the Bhaula baby, especially to determine whether the child might have been saved. There are two other Bhaula children. "Doctors are like God," said the baby's father, Harmesh Bhaula, 35. "They are supposed to save lives. I would like to shoot them for what they have done.
