i 1 Friday, Sept. 30, 1983 Philadelphia Inquirer Associated Press Close friends and family members solemnly pay their last respects to weatherman Jim O'Brien; he was buried yesterday Family and friends gather in Texas to bid farewell to Jim O'Brien By Joe Logan Inquirer Staff Writer HOUSTON They laid Jim O'Brien to rest here yesterday, flanked by his father on one side and a small grove of moss-draped shade trees on the other. About 50 people O'Brien's immediate family, his Texas kin, plus some close friends from Houston and Philadelphia solemnly arrived at Memorial Oaks Cemetery to return the popular Philadelphia television personality to the Texas soil from where he came. The Rev. A.M.

Stone, pastor of 0'Brien's home-town Fairbanks Baptist Church, presided over the 30- minute graveside service and deliv. ered a brief eulogy. He recounted 0'Brien's early call to the ministry and- evangelism, his unbridled enthusiasm for life, his lifelong ability of attracting those around him. It was a fitting remembrance of the man. known in Philadelphia for his wit, his effervescence and his decency, until a skydiving accident took his life six days ago.

"We've just learned that there was was beautiful memorial service up in Pennsylvania for James Oldham Jim O'Brien for you folk from up there." said the Rev. Stone. As he spoke, O'Brien's closest family members quietly wept, shielded from the Houston sun by a green funeral tent. Before them was O'Brien's bronze colored casket, adorned with a spray of bright yellow mums. Sitting in the front row were O'Brien's daughters, Peri Kay, 22, and Patti Joe, 20, both models in Dallas; Diane DePasquale, his girlfriend from Philadelphia; his mother, Frances Oldham, and his sister, Nancy Wood, whom he had visited here over Labor Day.

O'Brien's two wives, Sue Brooks and Sandra Gilpin, were also in attendance. As a young woman soloist sang "Amazing Grace," the women in 0'Brien's life were not the only people to turn to each other in sorrow. Channel 10 anchorman Steve Levy, one of 0'Brien's close friends, clutched hands with those around him and wiped away a tear. Others with Philadelphia connections also made the trip. Art Moore, WPVI-TV's director of public relations and perhaps 0'Brien's closest friend at the station, wept openly.

Close by were Channel 6 news director Alan Nesbitt; former Channel 6 reporter Pat Warren, now with a Dallas station; Ray Panella, a friend from the ski slopes, and a close friend, David Mallach. It is a plush, green cemetery where O'Brien came to rest. Once, the area was practically ranch country, but Houston has long since sprawled in its direction. Now, an interstate highway skirts the cemetery. 0'Brien's friends and family here knew he had become a success in television, but his modesty preventthem from knowing how popular he had become in Philadelphia.

When he was killed, the Houston papers ran a short story, but it was a wire-service story that called him Jim O'Brien, a name nobody here knew, and it said he was from Galveston, which is where he was born not reared. Bob Adam, probably O'Brien's best high school friend, now president of First Capital Savings in Houston, kept in touch. And two hours before the burial, Adam was in his 6th-floor office, reading The Inquirer's articles from the day after the accident. When Adam looked up, his eyes were al red. "I knew he was popular, but nothing like this," he said, forcing back the emotion.

Adam, a strapping football play. er, grew with same ex school, same church, same friends. "I spent a lot of nights over at Jimmy's house and he spent a lot at mine. Mrs. Oldham, she's like a second mother to me." As he reminisced, Adam thumbed O'Brien's daughter Peri Kay, 22, takes a flower from the casket through their old high school yearbook, offering proof positive that O'Brien was as at least as popular as a teenager as he was with Philadelphia television viewers.

There was scrawny Jimmy Oldham, flat-top, flannel shirt and jeans, voted "freshman favorite," not to mention "cutest" boy in the whole school. There was not a single year that he was not voted "class favorite." Oldham would go on to be president of the sophomore class; "most handsome" "most popular" in his sophomore, junior and senior year and Mr. Sportsmanship his junior year and senior year. As a senior, he also was voted Mr. CypressFairbank High.

And the star running back was voted to All-District team. "Jim handled high school the same way it sounds like he handled Philadelphia. He just simply had the leadership quality. He was blessed with that trait," Adam said. In some editions of The Inquirer yesterday, a caption on a Page 1 photograph incorrectly identified a family friend of Jim O'Brien as one of his daughters, Peri Kay.

Obituaries Roy C. Sullivan, 71, ex-ranger Associated Press WAYNESBORO, Va. A retired park ranger, described in the Guinness Book of World Records as the "lightning conductor of Virginia" because he had been struck seven times, was found dead in his home of a gunshot wound to the head, according to authorities.
