LUGAVERE Los Angeles Times It's not exactly the air attack CS Northridge has in mind, but Coach Tom Keele's expectations are high for his run-and-shoot offense. Western Football Conference Preview Will a New Look Mean New Life in 1985? Head Coach: Tom Keele Assistant Coaches: Rich Lopez (offensive coordinator): Mark Banker (defensive coordinator); Doug Molone (linebackers): Bobby Williams (defensive line): Scott Norris (offensive line); Ron Veres quarterbacks); Todd Mclntyre (wide receivers); Dennis Branigan (running backs); Frank Jamerson (defensive backs) By STEVE HENSON, Times Staff Writer The Western Football Conference wants your attention.

It wants you to remember its name and attend its games. And the three-year-old NCAA Division II conference is letting you know it isn't the same. "We want recognition," WPC Commissioner Vic Buccola said. "Our goal is to be the strongest Division II conference in the nation. We want the media coverage, the attendance, the whole works." What does the WFC offer for your entertainment dollar? More teams than last year, for starters.

Cal Lutheran and Sacramento State have joined existing members Cal State Northridge, Portland State, the University of Santa Clara and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Southern Utah State will be added in 1986. The addition of Cal Lutheran intensifies a natural rivalry with CSUN. The Kingsmen, who lost to the Matadors, 17-15, last season, have defeated CSUN three times in eight tries. Cal Lutheran had an impressive 166-54-6 record as an NAIA independent for 23 years under Coach Bob Shoup.

Sacramento State, 6-5 last season, has belonged to the nonseholarship Northern California Athletic Conference since 1954. "Expanding to eight teams is our immediate goal," Buccola said. "And we hope to have 10 merfield last season completed 190 of 349 passes for 2,426 yards. Knapp (6-4, 203) passed for 2,083 yards last season, including 351 in a 38-21 loss to Division II power UC Davis. He completed 142 of 274 passes on the season and had 15 interceptions and 16 touchdowns.

"We expect big things from Greg," Sacramento State Coach Bob Mattos said. "Our offense is a lot like Portland State's. Knapp will drop back and throw the ball all day." For the third straight year, Sacramento State finished second in its conference behind UC Davis. The Hornets were 5-1 in the NCAC and lost nonconference games to the WFC's San Luis Obispo, Portland State, CSUN and Santa Clara. Santa Clara, 1-2 in the WFC and 7-4 overall last season, is undergoing both a coaching and quarterback change.

Terry Malley, 31, has taken over the Broncos' coaching reins from his father, Pat, who passed away this year. Pat Malley coached Santa Clara for 26 years, compiling a record of 141 -100-3. Two of the quarterbacks Malley coached in the 1960s were brothers Ron and Ray Calcagna. Ron's son, Greg Calcagna, is a 6-3 sophomore quarterback who has been handed the starting job by Terry Malley. Calcagna grew up in Santa Clara and led the local high school, St.

Francis, Please see WFC, Page 13 teams within five years." Cal Poly Pomona was a WFC member for one year before dropping its football program in 1983, reducing the conference to four teams. It was a cozy little conference, to be sure. But sharing the title with a record of 2-1, as CSUN and Santa Clara did in 1983, stretched the meaning of the word "champion." Said Portland State Coach Don Read: "It was wrong there weren't enough teams. Six teams make a legitimate conference." And if the coaches are to be believed, the new, improved WFC will offer balance, a variety of styles and impressive individual talent. The parity that NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle has been searching for can be found in the WFC.

The conference title has been handed around like a sugar bowl at the breakfast table. San Luis Obispo won in 1982, CSUN and Santa Clara were co-champs in '83, and Portland State took the title last season. "It's a crazy conference," Read said. "Rarely are there blowouts; balance has been the primary appeal." This season, WFC quarterbacks may be just as appealing. Terry Summerfield of Portland State and Greg Knapp of Sacramento State, both seniors, are professional prospects.

"Summerfield will pass about 40 times a game out of a BVU -style offense," Read predicted. A 6-4, 210-pound, classic drop-back passer, Sum Cal Lutheran 1985 Football Roster Cal State Northridge COACH: Tom Keele. 7th year. 26-36-1 LAST SEASON: Fourth in Western Football Conference (0-3 in WFC. 3-7 overall) PLAYERS TO WATCH: Chris Parker won a battle with Danny Fernandez and will start at quarterback.

Problem: Boyond All-WFC tackle Ray Oergel, not one offensive lineman has experience at CSUN. Keele hopes that in trying to direct the run-and-shoot. Parker doesn't have to run and hide from unblocked defenders. If Parker shoots blanks, the Matadors will run with tailback Mike Kane and wingbacks Eric Davis and Richard Brown. Kane, who missed all three WFC games with an injury, rushed for 675 yards in seven games last season.

Watch for Davis and Brown, who Keele says are two of his best athletes, to run plenty ol counters and reverses from the double-wing set. The run-and-shoot utilizes two split ends, and sophomores Nick Uruburu and Scott Colvih will start. Ken Garrett, Vince Chambers and Charles Collins also will see action at end. The Matadors return eight starters on defense, including All-WFC linemen Darrell Mclntyre and Joe Barbosa. Reggie Wauls has been a ploasant surprise at middle linebacker, while Ray Johnson and Mike Pestana will start as outside linebackers.

All-WFC cornerback Steve Benjamin anchors a strong 'secondary. Other defensive backs who will play considerably include cornerback Jon Bradshaw and safeties Ron Foster, Pat Cerruti and Simon Goss. All-America kicker Bryan Wagner graduated and will be replaced at punter by Parker and at kicker by MikeDoan OUTLOOK: "We thought we had our best team ever last season, and we had a rough time," Keele said. "This year we'll go back to being the underdog. Maybe we'll perform better that way." With a new offense and a new quarterback, the Matadors insist they won't be discouraged if they get off to a rocky start.

"I'll look for improvement each week," Keele said. No. Player Pos. Ht. Wt.

Inglewood JOEL P. LUGAVERE Los Angolcs Times Coach Tom Keele, left, is calling the shots for Cal State Northridge, and quarterback Chris Parker is calling the signals when the season starts on Saturday. Cal Lutheran College COACH: Bob Shoup, 24th year, 1 66-54-6 LAST SEASON: 5-4-1 record as an NAIA independent PLAYERS TO WATCH: Defense traditionally has been the strength ol the Kingsmen and 1985 will be no exception. Middle linebacker Earl Bentancourt is a converted defensive end who led the team with 19 sacks last year. Opponents ran away from his side but won't be able to now that he's in the middle.

Chris Heintz, Ken Wood, Tom Gabriel and Robert Jackson are other fine linebackers. Cornerback Chris Hutchorson, who intercepted seven passes last season, heads a secondary that also includes Mike Duffy and Mark Taggatz. Shawn Tippit, Ruben Solorio, Brian Parham, Matt Dann and Jim Buffo will see action on the defensive line. The Cal Lutheran oflense was anemic at times last season, especially on the ground. The top three running bocks Leo Brionos, Tracy Downs and Noel Hicks return, but none gained more than 250 yards.

Wide Receiver Joe Fuca and split end Greg Harris, Cal Lutheran's top receiver last season, return. Darren Gottschalk and Jeff Krabiel are expected to divide duty at tight end. Scrambling sophomore Tom Bonds has beaten out Vic Wilson at quarterback, although Shoup says both will see action. Scott Innis is the lone returner on the offensive line, and he has moved from tackle to guard. The rest of the linemen Tim McClolland, Eric Riegert, Jim Mesa, and Dave Breck are small by WFC standards.

All-American punter Bill Turner and kicker Joe Heynosltl, who graduated, have been replaced by Kent Sullivan. OUTLOOK: The Kingsmen, in saying hello to the NCAA and the WFC. have said goodby to Claromont-Mudd, San Diego, and Wostorn Stateteams they routinely scheduled and defeated. "We are the youngest and the smallest in the WFC, but consider joining a great opportunity," Shoup said. "We will be competitive." Head Coach: Robert Shoup Assistant Coaches: Gene Uebdlhardt (offensive coordinatorrunning backs); Jim Bauer (delensive coordinatorline backers); John Loranzana (offensive line); Pete Alamar (offensive line); Ernie Sendlin (defensive line); Don Reyes (defensive backs).

BOB CAREY Los Angeles Times Cal Lutheran linebackers are expected to be the strength of the defense, but going up against defenders Blake Helm, left, and Lloyd Swanson, right, won't be easy..
