Probably some people will think it is contemporary and provocative, while others will just think it is smutty and cheap. The three are a handsome young man, Jack Tripper, played by John Ritter; a pretty blonde, Chrissy Snow, played by Suzanne Somers, and an attractive brunette, Janet Wood, played by Joyce DeWitt. The situation in this sitcom is that Chrissy and Janet were sharing an apartment in Santa Monica, with another girl named Eleanor, who got married and left. Needing somebody else to help pay the rent, they decide to take in Jack. They just want his money, though-not his love.

In order to get the landlord to accede to this, the three agree to pretend that Jack is homosexual. This show is an American adaptation of a British series that was entitled "Man About the House." The idea seems to have spoiled some during overseas passage. John Ritter looks like the performer most comfortable in his role. He is the son of Tex Ritter, the late cowboy actor and singer, and he looks to be a fine fellow. He'll probably find success somewhere else if this series The two young women, however, have to spend much of the premiere trying to disentangle themselves from bad writing.

Their roles aie going to be hard to play. We are asked to believe, for example, that ChrLssy is so naive that she would see Jack enter with some groceries and tell him with pure innocence, "Come in the kitchen and show me what you've got." Janet is supposed to be more circumspect, and also have dignity and MECHANIC I icvn (Associate Degree in Specialized Technology Equal Opportunity Trainer Approved tor Veteran Training I class. Yet almost the first line she is given to say before Jack arrives is, "I did my part. I put the toilet seat up." The landlord's wife, Helen Roper, played by Audra Lindley, is almost funny. Her defining characteriitic is that her husband doesn't make love to her enough.

So she goes around contriving lines, like "Fix the doorbell, Stanley; it's time somebody's chimes were rung around here." Hers would be a playable role if someone could be found to write it better. Meanwhile the landlord spends his time thinking of different things to call Jack, like "fairy," and ways to ridicule him and vent hostility toward him. After one has heard his opinion expressed a time or two, it merely becomes tiresome. Yet the premiere does have moments when it works, and if "Three's Company" could find some writers of the ability who made hits of "Mary Tyler Moore" and "MASH," it is possible to imagine that this series might be successful as blue comedy. It'll be hard to do, though.

After all, how long can you keep three healthy and attractive young people in one house and out of the same bed without them eventually starting to look either coy, Victorian, chiidisn, ludicrous or incredible? Centuries ao St. Paul, who said "it is better to marry than to burn," knew more about human nature than that. (215) 335-0800 TECHMICAL INSTITUTE i Approved for VelMm' Training 3815 OTTER ST. According to David h.

The exigencies of doing his Channel 3-based 90-minute Monday-to-Friday shows, Salzman says, has caused Douglas to turn down numerous past offers. Right now he has an invitation to pick one of several "Police Story" scripts. Douglas recentlv released a new record. "Sleen Well, My Son." and OKd distribution of Mike Douqlas neckties.
