(AP Wirephoto) SAIGON (AP) Enemy forces shelled half a dozen major allied bases In South Vietnam today In a fourth day of intensified attacks. A rocket at Da Nang Air Base triggered a massive fuel fire that raged out of control and forced evacuation of hundreds of Americans. U.S.

military analysts termed the shelling attacks a "cheap offensive." "They take practically no casualties," said one. "They set up rockets on two bamboo sticks and light a time fuse. By the time the rockets fall on U.S. positions, the enemy has been home In bed five hours." The analysts said captured North Vietnamese and Viet Cong documents indicated more intensified shelling attacks In the coming weeks to mark several important Communist holidays. They include May Day, a traditional Communist holiday; May 7, the 17th anniversary of the Viet Minh victory over the French at Dien Bien Phu, and May 19, Ho Chi Minh's birthday.

At Da Nang, South Vietnam's second largest city, one of four rockets that hit the air base scored a direct hit on a storage tank containing about 35,000 gallons of jet fuel. The fire spread to another tank containing an equal amount of aviation gasoline. Barracks and work areas were evacuated for fear the second tank would explode and trigger a chain reaction among half a dozen other fuel tanks. The U.S. Command that Cam Ranh Air Base, nearly 300 miles south of Da Nang, was shelled by less than five rounds of rockets for the second successive night.

A spokesman said some Americans were wounded. He said there was no material damage. for 30 years until his retirement in 1946. He was born in Marsala, Sicily, March 4, 1881. For the past 55 years he had resided in Wood River. He was married to the former Catering Signorino In 1911 in St. Louis.

In addition 10 his widow, he is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Sarah Gentile of St. Louis, Airs. Pauline Masurany, Mrs. Mary Dugan and Airs.

Lucy Peters, all of Rosewood Heights; four sons, James C. of Rosewood Heights, Joseph P. of Alton, Sam P. and Ange, both of Wood River; 29 grandchildren; 13 f-reat grandchildren and a sister, Antoinette of Italy. Three brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.

Friends may call after 7 p.m. today at Marks Mortuary In Wool River, where a prayer service will be at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, of which he was a member, at 9:30 a.m.

Wednesday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home, Jerseyville, where the Rev. Thomas Burke, pastor of Brown Street Baptist Church, will conduct funeral services at 2 p.m. Thursday. He formerly resided at 813 Ridge Alton. Surviving are his widow, Lena; a stepson and stepgrandchildren. Bucklin ROODHOUSE Dr. N. J.

Bucklm, who had practiced medicine in Roodhouse since 1923 and was a member of the medical staffs at both Passavant Hospital in Jacksonville and Boyd Memorial in Carrollton, died at 3 a.m. today in Reisch Memorial Nursing Home in Carrollton. He was 78. Dr. Bucklm, a veteran of World War was a 51-year member of the Roodhouse American Legion Post; and was also a member of the Rotary Club and the Greene County Farm Bureau.

He had served many terms on both the grade and high school boards. His professional affiliations included membership in the Greene County, the Illinois and the American Medical Associations. Dr. Bucklm was born in Pratt County, Kansas, on Aug. 25, 1893 and earned his bachelors and masters degrees at Friends University at Wichita, Kan.

and his M.D. at the Loyola School of Medicine in Chicago. Besides his widow, the former Lois Clark, Dr. Bucklin Is survived by one daughter, Mrs. AUyn Nichols of White Hall; one son Nathaniel J.

Bucklin, of Springfield, two sisters, Mrs. Dulcie Shaffer of Pratt, and Mrs. Zella Sitton of Ford, a brother, Lynn S. Bucklin of Eugene, and four grandsons. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m.

Thursday in the United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Fernwood Cemetery. Visitation at Wolfe Memorial Home will begin at 4 p.m. Wednesday with the family receiving friends between 7 and 9 p.m. Grossman EDWARDSVILLE Mrs.

Katharine T. Crossman, 50, of 152 South Gate Road, Peoria, died Monday morning at Methodist Hospital in Peoria. Born Jan. 5, 1921 at Ed- wardsvlUe, a djughter of Mrs. Mildred Brown Tuxhorn of Edwardsville and the late Albert H.

Tuxhorn, she was married Oct. 19, 1940 to William R. Crossman, who survives. Two daughters, Mrs. Gideon Weisz of Williamsburg, and Miss Christine Crossman of Columbia, a brother, Edward Tuxhorn of St.

Petersburg, a sister, Mrs. Eugene Leitner of Edwardsville, and one grandchild survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday from St. Andrew's Episcopal Church by Rev.

Michael Pullin, with burial to be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made either to the Altar Guild of St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral of Peoria or the Woodlawn Cemetery Chapel of Edwardsville. The Fletcher Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. There will be no visitation.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) Louis "Grandpa" Jones of Grand Ole Opry fame is recuperating at hime following open hear! surgery April 15. "I'm feeling pretty fine although I'm pretty sore around the chest," Jones said Monday. "Oddly enough, I feel better in the afternoon than I do when I get up In the mornings."
