Fightin' Black Cats Will Face Great Powerhouse From Mart By BOB WRIGHT Right after the 28 0 thumping they administered to Sonora, the class A scourge of West Texas, Marl's big, fast and great Panthers began to mentally prepare for their invasion of Mexia Friday night, Sept. 18, 1970. The 28 0 victory by Mart of course, resulted in the class A state championship. Coach Edd Burleson's boys now move up to class AA this year and they want to use Mexia's Fightin' Black Cats as a springboard to greater heights. Naturally, this all transpires this Friday night at 8 o'clock on Black Cat Field, where Coach Dale Baker's Fightin' Cats could have something to say about the outcome.

Mexia is apparently geared up for a top effort. been no doubt about Mart's effort that'll be forthcoming here Friday evening. The talk at Mart is all about the Fightin' Black Cats with fans over there confident their Friday Night Heroes will conquer Mexiaites. Fresh from a 21-6 strapping of perennial power, Clifton, the Panthers come to town armed with impressive credentials, including eight offensive and defensive regulars from the crackerjack club that sped to the state crown late last fall. Coach Burleson is so blessed with rich talent that he can afford to start entirely different units both offensively and defensively.

In other words, Burleson can call on 11 men when the Panthers have 'the ball, then run in 11 fresh shock troops to hold the Fightin' Cats. Offensively, the undisputed "leader and winner," according to Coach Burleson, is quarterback Calvin Jones, a fine 150 NOW THRU SAT. RATED JACK LEMMON SANDY DENNIS NEIL SIMON STORY THEOUT-OF-TOWNERS 0r MOVCLAB A PARAMOUNT BCIURf pound ball handler. Fullback Jack West, who has been shifted from wingback, is with his slashing runs. West has good speed, good power and weighs 200.

Joining this great pair in the backfield are tailback James Baker and slot back Rodney Blasingame. Blasingame, 170, is a former Mexiaite possessing good speed and is a prime aerial target for the pinpoint passing of Jones. A couple of fine ends; Mike Ward and split end Roy Booker, also make the Mart passing click. The former, a tight end, tips the scales at 200 and is a fine blocker. The latter, weighing 150, has very good speed and is extremely dangerous on the deep routes.

What worries Coach Baker is that Jones can get the ball to Booker easily. Bud Chadwell, a 190 pound super center, possesses quickness in aiding the Panther cause. On either side of Chadwell are guards Clay Davis 170, and David Connally, 155. Both are fine blockers and are quick. Needless to say, this greatly enhances Mart's ability to exercise the sweeps with precision and finesse.

The tackles are in capable hands with 189 pound Joe Vanous, a fine blocker, and Wayne Ballman, 190. So far, the Panther Express hasn't been slowed from the T- formation. Burleson has indicated he can go with 11 fresh bodies defensively or use some of his top flight personnel from the offensive brigade. Right now, it looks as if Mart will line up defensively with Frank and Jim West, a couple of 200 pounders, at ends; 185 pound John Davis and Chadwell at the tackles; Edward Costley, Mike Ward and as the linebackers; Guy Yarborough 150, and Nat Costley 160, at halfback; Tommy Rowe 155 and Rodney Sharp 135, as safeties. Burleson would rate his linebacking corps- rate his linebacking corps as excellent.

And why Linebacking is where they rate first team all stater Edward Costley 180, as the best in the business. Costley, nicknamed is rated as perhaps the best football player over at Mart. Fightin' Cat blockers face a mammoth task in meeting the "Train." Edward is the middle linebacker. Ward, 200, is the left linebacker, while Connally, 155, is on the right side. Another Costley (his name is Dependable Retread The Full Shoulder to Shoulder Retread with Poly-BD Rubber! Wear-resisting Poly-BD tread corn pound! Wrap-around design increases stability! FREE Tire Mounting! Expert Wheel Balancing! estem Nat) also makes runners pay for getting into his territory.

Nat is a sure tackier and perhaps the Panthers' premier defensive back. The Panthers' Jack West, who handles punting chores for the Class A state champions, boots 'em barefooted. And, his kicks go high and far, minimizing returns and allowing for great Panther coverage. Offensively, the Fightin' Black Cats will attempt to move the ball on Mart with Steve Gillmore 170 at quaterback; Sam LeNoir 170 at fullback; Ken Proctor 150 and Willie Busby 150 at halfbacks; Mike Langston 150 at center; Wayne Jackson 195 and Jon Phillips 200 at guards; David Campbell 175 and Robert Thompson 180 at tackles; James Lockhart 160 and Melvin Dunn 170 at the ends. Defensively, Mexia will have Jackson and Campbell at the tackles; Dunn and Ricky Coulter 180 at the ends; LeNoir, Mike Langston and Lockhart as the linebackers; Busby and Gillmore at the hanves; Henry Levingston 160 and David Echols 145 as the safeties.

fttwda iatlg PAGE 6 THURSDAY, SEPT. 17,1970 MEXIA, TEXAS Bi-Stone Grid Clubs Are Busy Four of five Bi Stone area teams are trying this week for their initial victories of the 1970 season. Only Groesbeck was successful in the Bi Stone area, with exception of Mexia, which clobbered Teague 58 0. Mexia hosts Mart, while the Goats of Groesbeck head for a rendezvous with the Midway Panthers. This should be quite a AA battle as Coach John Trantham's Goats try to duplicate their 34 2 win over Grapeland's Sandies in the first week of '70 action.

The Goats are spearheaded in the line by John McCarver, Wesley White, Bob Radford and Winston Livingston. They were instrumental in opening daylight for Goat backs Randy Hyden, tailback, and fullback Kenneth Nelms a week ago. R. T. Beck is proving to be a fine signal caller in directing the Goats' attack.

Waco Midway is also highly regarded this year, featuring the passing of quarterback David McCutchen and the running of fullback Billy Garrett. Coach Don Jopling's luckless Coolidge Yellowjackets, 72 0 victims to the Riesel Indians last week, hope to rally for a more respectable showing Friday night at Lakeside Park in Coolidge. The 'Jackets, who get sterling play from center linebacker Brian Freeman, host the Frost Polar Bears. Wortham's Bulldogs, coached by Carl Peters, travel to Riesel and hope for better things than their 21 6 setback at Blooming Grove against the Lions last week. The 'Dogs get fine quarterbacking from Joe West and Mark Collier, complementing the running of fullback Norris Buchmeyer and halfback Stanley Chatman.

Down Leon County way, the Centerville Tigers go to Lovelady and hope to continue their winning ways following a season opening 40 0 victory over lola last week. Coach Bobby Prescott's club is geared around a Veer-T offense that's operated by quarterback Danny Lacey. He likes to hit split end Andy Leathers on passing shots to move the Tigers. Lacey is also a standout defender, holding forth at linebacker. The Elkhart Elks, 20 7 victors over the Fairfield Eagles, visit the Buffalo Bisons, coached by Gene Darby.

Buffalo was also successful in its opener last Friday night at Westwood. The Bisons' chief offensive weapon is tailback Charles McGill. Quarterback Byron Ryder is another team leader and fine signal caller. The Dawkins boys Lee and Edgar also shine at the end positions. Kirk Dawkins is another dandy at tackle.

Elkhart is led by quarterback Nat Coleman, George Blackmon and Billy Jack Wright in the backfield. The Kerens Bobcats, who ripped the Dawson Bulldogs in the season's initial outing, visit the Fairfield Eagles at Eagle Field. Fairfield lost to Elkhart 20 7 and will be attempting a giant sized comeback. Fairfield, coached by Jim Reed and led on the field by tough running backs Gene Chavers and Steve Await, hope for an upset. Wayne George is a premier tackle for the Eagles.

Elsewhere in Freestone County, the Teague Lions stay at home on Gregory Field to battle the Robinson Rockets, coached by Bobby Brooks. Quarterback Donnie Snider, end Gary Elliston, tackle Edward Thomas and guard Joe Oliver spark the Rockets. Coach Jim McLendon's Lions, seeking to atone for that 58 0 whopping against Mexia, bank on the running of fullback Danny Bonner and the quarterbacking of David Collins, plus sterling line play of tackle Mark Tutt. BRAD HARRIS At SEARS IN MEXIA Every Wednesday 562-2851 To Sponsor Houston SWC Membership HOUSTON (AP)-The University of Texas will sponsor the admittance of the University of Houston to the Southwest Conference, the Houston Post reported in Wednesday's editions. The newspaper said Texas will bring up the matter at the annual conference meeting in December.

If the application is approved, the Post said, Houston could contend for the Southwest football crown in the 1974 season. Houston's athletic director Harry Fouke refused to comment on the story. The Post said it has learned the Texas faculty representative J. Neils Thompson visited Houston recently and conferred with officials of Rice University and UH about the Cougars' admission to the conference. Fouke and Texas athletic director Darrel Royal have held several discussions on the subject, the Post said.

Contacted at Austin, Royal said, "It would serve no useful purpose to anyone involved if I said anything about it at this time. It's premature for me to talk about it." Houston has been an independent since withdrawing from the Missouri Valley Conference in 1959. A three-fourths by six necessary Landry Makes Lineup Shift DALLAS, Tex. (AP) Dallas Cowboy head coach Tom Landry said before training camp that performance would count in determining Cowboy starters, and if you didn't believe him, just look at Sunday's starting lineup against Philadelphia. Landry announced Tuesday he was starting No.

2 quarterback Roger Staubach in place of No. 1 Craig Morton. "Craig's in a slump," Landry said. "And Roger's been throwing good. We'll just keep working with Craig in practice and see if he can work it out." Morton had another ineffective showing in last Sunday's 29-21 exhibition loss to the New York Jets.

Staubach came in and pumped some life into the offense, at least momentarily. for expansion of the conference. The proposal would have to be made in writing at least 30 days in advance. Schools do not apply for admission to the Southwest Conference. They are invited to join.

Texas Tech, admitted to form an eight-team league in 1956, participated in the football race for the first time in i960. At the same time Tech was admitted Baylor University representatives proposed that UH join the conference but the motion died for lack of a second. The state-supported University of Houston has an enrollment of 25,000 this year, surpassed in the state by the 35,000 at the University of Texas at Austin. Ex-Mexia Golfing Champ Wins Honors At Palestine Club Mrs. Audrey Hammer, a former Mexia woman's golf champion, gained possession of the permanent Pryor Golf Trophy at the Meadowbrook Country Club of Palestine, shooting a gross score of 175 net 157 for the club's third consecutive year.

Audrey is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Adams, Sr. of Mexia. Pete Lazetich Is Feller Who Hurt Arkansas Pete Lazetich loves the folks down in Arkansas but it's doubtful if the feeling is mutual these days.

Lazetich, you see, a big ol' country boy from Billings, was one of the keys to the Stanford defense that played a large part in the Indians' 34-28 victory Saturday over fourth- ranked Arkansas. A 6-foot-3, 236-pound defensive he's one of the two inside men in Stanford's front six unassisted tackles and helped out on another. You'll find many players with more impressive statistics, but the husky junior got to quarterback Bill Montgomery behind the line three times, knocked down a pass and threw the key block on Eric Cross' 61-yard punt return that gave Stanford a 27-0 lead. The block came 25 yards from where Lazetich originally started to rush the kick- For that over-all performance, Lazetich was named National College Lineman of the Week by The Associated Press. understand those Arkansas people," Lazetich said.

"They're really great and I love 'em. 1 wanted to wear my 10- gallon hat, but the coach thought I shouldn't. did wear my cowboy boots, though. I have an uncle who told me to always let people know where you come from." Defense line coach Max McCartney described Pete's play against Arkansas this way: "Me was a big key in stopping Arkansas' passing game with his strong inside rush. He also had much to do with forcing Arkansas' fine running backs to run to the corners rather than up the middle." er.
