Sunday, June 26, 1977 Philadelphia Inquirer 3-E Fom 7 6e driving under yellow to Pocono eral secondary roads, traffic will be diverted in case of major stoppages! The approaches from both east and west via Interstate 80 should flow quite smoothly. In addition to problems from the south, there is addi tional turnpike repair being done between the Pocono and Wilkes-Barr exits and those approaching from the north should get off at Exit 36 ajtd follow Pa. 115 south directly to he track. Bill Simmons Ifit? XKi. LONG POND, Pa.

Racing fans who will be heading for Pocono International Raceway today for the seventh running of the Schaefer 500 mile race should keep several things in mind. First, remember that there will be upwards of 100,000 people doing the same thing and anytime that many people are going to the same place, congestion will result. But, due to conditions beyond the control of Pocono management, there may be some very serious bottlenecks and, for that reason, Pocono-bound travelers would be well-advised to leave early. Race time is 1 p.m. The biggest problems will develop on the northeast extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, which is the fastest and easiest way to get to the race track under normal conditions.

But now, there is extensive repair work being done at several places on the highway and traffic is reduced to a single lane with a 40 miles per hour speed limit at those spots. Most of the construction takes place in the final 20 miles before exit 35, so those' coming north from the Delaware Valley would be advised to plan an alternate route. Instead of going to exit 35, plan on leaving the Turnpike at exit 34, Mahoning Valley Interchange. Then proceed north on U. S.

220 about 20 miles to Pa. 115. Go north on that road about 15 miles to the raceway. As you approach, you would be advised to turn to 590 on the AM radio dial, where station WARM will broadcast traffic conditions every 15 minutes. As they did last year, Pocono officials will control the traffic flow from helicopters.

Foyt's engine is a much modified version of the Ford power plant that was an integral part of the so-called rear-engine revolution of a decade and a half ago. It is a proven dependable engine that has carried Foyt to many victories and, based on his qualifying performance, figures to make him a slight favorite to score his third Schaefer victory in his 33d 500-mile race. There is a question of the legendary Texan's frame of mind. He won his fourth Indy crown a month ago by keeping a low-key approach. Here, however, Foyt has been his more typical volatile self.

His on-again, off-again approach to the Schaefer 500 all week resulted in the qualifying day spectators giving him a surprising round of boos and catcalls when he went out for his time trial run. That, and his ongoing battle with Citicorp, the sponsor of the national championship series, has Foyt in a near-constant dither. And when the man is mad, he pushes harder sometimes harder than his equipment can stand. Assuming he keeps heart, soul and equipment together, Foyt still will not have everything his own way. Between he and Johncock are the Cosworth V8-powered MaLarens of Rutherford, Andretti and Sneva, all of whom qualified at better than 189 miles per hour.

Andretti and Sneva are somewhat questionable as far as lasting power is concerned because the Penske teammates are working on their fourth and fifth engines of the week. "We think we know what the problem was," Andretti said. "What happened to me on qualifying day engine valve failure) was the same thing that happened to Tom the day before." But during Friday's final practice session, Andretti's stock took another Use on trips. Gordon Johncock is the only Offenhauser driver who can be considered a serious threat to win today's seventh annual Schaefer 500-mile race at Pocono International Raceway.

Otherwise, it figures to be a battle among A. J. Foyt, Johnny Rutherford, Mario Andretti, Al Unser, Tom Sneva' and super-quick rookie Danny OngaiS. jhej'll be driving the turbocharged V5 wftich Rutherford calls the engine ofthe year in United States Auto Club Citicorp Cup competition. 'The only way 1 can see a V8 not winning this race is if they all drop out," said Rutherford, a two-time Indianapolis winner and the 1974 Schaefer champion.

Johncock, the defending national champion who is winless in six Championship Trial starts this year, agrees that the eight-cylinder engines have a slight edge over the venerable turbo-Offenhauser such as he uses, but the 40-year-old Arizonan concedes nothing. "We're right up there with the fastest of them," said the 1973 Indy 500 winner, who qualified fifth fastest at 188.957 m.p.h. "Hell, I don't know what the fuss is about. We're only a half a mile slower than the pole car." Johncock didn't bring it up, but the fact is, he not only was competitive with the V8s but outran them until his engine failed with only 16 laps remaining in last month's Indianapolis 500. Foyt, the irascible 42-year-old four-time Indy winner who is perpetuating the most serious internal struggle in USAC since Andy Granatelli's battle over the turbines in the late 1960s, will lead the 33-car field to the green flag at 1 p.m.

before a predicted crowd of more than 100,000. Foyt won the pole position Thursday with a last-ditch qualifying run of 189.474 miles per hour. That didn't surpass the track record of 190.648 set in 1973 by the late Peter Revson, but it was enough to push Rutherford off the pole position.
