Most of the J977 baseball season has been dominated by two topics the New York Yankees and the so-called "rabbit ball." Larry Bowa hit his third homer of the year last night, against the Cincinnati Reds, setting quipsters and storytellers on fire, since the "Gnat" had hit only seven in his previous seven years in the majors. One baseball player he couldn't comment about the National League, but he knew for sure there was a rabbit in the balls supplied the American League. "The other night after batting practice in Anaheim Stadium, he said, "they left a couple of stray baseballs alone together in the far corner of the field. By the fifth inning, they had multiplied to 22." Women of all ages will get a chance to talk baseball with Bob and Sue Boone of the Phillies tomorrow night, in the first Phillies Forum.

The discussion will be held from 6:15 to 6:45 on the 200 level concourse in left field. Announcer Harry Kalas will be moderator. As all-star teams go, the following would be pretty potent in any era of baseball. Consider this lineup: First base, Harmon Killebrew; second base, Maury Wills; shortstop, Phil Rizzuto; third base, George Kell; catcher, Joe Garagiola; outfield, Duke Snider, Ralph Kirter and Al Kaline; pitchers, Herb Score, Don Drysdale, Joe Nuxhall, Bob Gibson, Mudcat Grant and Early Wynn. On the bench, the stars have Tony Rubek, Bill White, Richie Ashburn, Jim Picrsall and Hawk Harrelson.

In case you haven't figured it out by, now, the above lineup is a mythical all-star team composed of former major leaguers now active radio-television broadcasters. And the pond dies. Quotable: The Lord giveth Perhaps the only way to keep Reggie Jackson on a plane with all the rest of us mortals is to recall the line from San Diego Padres owner Ray Kroc who, when dickering with the Yankee slugger during his free agency, said: "The trouble with you Reggie, is you think you're God. Well, I've got something to tell you. You're not God. I'M God." Don McKee Windsor.

Will he or won't he? That is the question on everybody's lips concerning A. J. Foyt's participation in Sunday's Schaefer 500.

Foyt, who 23 days ago became the first man ever to win the Indianapolis 500 four times is carrying on a personal vendetta with Citicorp, the sponsor of the United States Auto Club's championship trail series. The 42-year-old Texan who is rte all-time leader in USAC victories with 58, says he doesn't want anything to do with the Citicorp Cup and refuses to acknowledge the company's participation. He's so irate, in fact, that as late as yesterday he was saying he wasn't sure whether he would run at Pocono. His car is entered here but without an assigned driver. Ml on By Bill Simmons Inquirer Auto Editor LONG POND, Pa. When 33 of the world's best drivers and fastest cars take the green flag at 1 p.m. Sunday for the start of the Schaefer 500, it will mark a milestone of sorts. It will be the seventh consecutive "Indy of the East" on a track that, 1(1 years ago, nobody figured would ever be finished and one that numerous detractors were saying would revert to its former status as a spinach farm as recently as last summer. pocono International Raceway, which has earned an international reputation as the home of one of America's true major events, is here to stay.

The corporation is not at this point making any of its stockholders rich. But the seemingly incessant rumors of its impending financial demise have been silenced. "We are far from being a fully solvent company, but now we are on solid ground," said Dr. Joseph Matti-oli, the Philadelphia dentist turned Pocono real estate entrepreneur who has been the track's chief executive officer for a decade. Pocono International Raceway, located some 20 miles southeast of Exit 35 on the northeast extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, has had more than its share of tribulations.

And, despite the current progress, there undoubtedly will be more. "The problems we had last year are Mattioli said, "but we learned very early in this business that new ones always come along to take their places." Pocono has suffered all kinds of growing pains, the most serious of which were not its fault. The biggest problem has been weather. It started in 1972 with Hurricane Agnes, a storm that ripped through the Poconos and other areas of the Northeast on June 21 and left enough rain to last several more days. It fouled things up to such an extent that almost a week before the race was scheduled to be run, it had to be postponed a month, And, to add insult to injury, the originally scheduled race day was sunny and warm.

More weather woes Three times, since, the weather has interfered in one way or another last year raising havoc with the time trials. "I don't even think about the weather anymore: I refuse to sweat-it," Mattioli said. "I've finally realized that since I can do absolutely nothinc about it. I mieht as well he optimistic." There were other problems that Mattioli and his staff could do something about. Three years ago, traffic got so bad on race day morning that some fans were still fighting their way into the facility 100 miles into the which was started an hour late due to brief showers.

That has been completely rectified by a traffic control system that is directed from airborne helicopters. When any of the three major incoming roads show signs of backing up, traffic is diverted to another area until the congestion clears. It worked so well with last year's crowd of some 90,000 that track officials were prompted to say they could easily handle as many as 30,000 more. Money has always been a scarce commodity at Pocono. In the beginning, it was as much a result of a lack of proper security and Improper control of ticket sales as anything else.

Of late, it has been escalating costs. But the Philadelphia-based First Pennsylvania Company has under Value Priced! General Jumbo 780. super tire buy! "I think everybody knows there was no consistency here," Bradley said. "No consistent coaching staff and no consistent NFL roster of players. Seems like the nine years I'va been here there has been a rebuilding program for next year. As Coach Vermeil said.

I couldn't fit into his rebuilding program and he's going to force young players to play." Vermeil tried to handle the delicate trade as openly as possible. "Bill and I have had open communications," tne bead coach said. "It's a policy of mine that when I'm going to trade a character football player, we communicate with one another." Vermeil got the word to Bradley yesterday afternoon just as Super Bill, as Texans have always called him, was getting ready to shower. Vermeil envisions Bradley as Minnesota's starting free safety, a status that would mean higher compensation, probably a second-round draft pick. He also foresees young Tee Parker as Bradley's Eagles successor.

"He (Parker) has the ability to play the position and play it well," Vermeil said. "I'm going to force him into getting the job done. If he doesn't, we'll try another young player in there." Bradley arrived, on the cene in 1969 with some memorable players Leroy Keyes Ernie Calloway player-coach Irv Cross Don Chuy George Mira.
