The initials stand for "you can't get it done by sitting on That's Winkles' technique, building a baseball team at ASU. Baseball has been a solid sport at ASU for just about two years.

Before that it was orphaned, lacked funds, the only uniforms available when the sport revived were motheaten togs left over from days when Tempe teams were known as "Bulldogs." A few years back the school whittled baseball out of Its program-- but players wouldn't let it die. came up with some rap-tag equipment, coached themselves, built a diamond out of nothing at all, and kept the sport going. Alerted to the interest, ASU gave baseball backing, purchased equipment, and brought in Winkles to coach. Bobby has done a brisk job with some sympathetic help. TLC Builds Good Diamond John Ellington, head of the school's physical plant, and Bob Svob, chief of grounds, teamed with Winkles and with "make-do" supplies and equipment have developed a field that would cost $20,000 to duplicate.

There are dugouts and practice mounds. Scoreboard, fencing, and tender, loving care on a diamond that is a jewel of which all concerned are proud. With such local enthusiasm for baseball, Winkles hopes to move a few night games into Phoenix Municipal Stadium. Offering such first-class attractions as Wisconsin, California, and the University of Arizona, this would be as close as Phoenix will get to "home town" baseball, other than contemplated American Legion games in the former home of the Phoenix Giants. He has a tremendous knowledge of hitting and will be assigned to work with players," Jurges said. WILLIAMS CHECKED into camp this week still complaining about an aching neck which Bothered him last season, but at the same time confident in his ability to put in a full season for the Bosox. "I want to be more than just a pinch hitter," said Ted who started slowly last year, but fin- shed the season strong to minimize fears his ailment might snuff his career. He looked amply strong in the batting cage yesterday, lashing out long hits. And he ran and fielded with agility that gave no indication of trouble.

JURGES SAID Williams will start his work with infielder Carl Yastrezemski, 21-year-old who hit .377 with Raleigh in the Carolina league last year; catcher Jim Pagliaroni, .216 with Vancouver of the Pacific Coast League; outfielder Jerry Mallett, .278 with Allentown of the Eastern League in 130 games, and .265 in four games with Boston; and Moe Mahoney, .212 in 103 games at Minneapolis and .130 in 31 games at Boston. Most of yesterday's session was devoted to picture taking and socializing as the full squad worked for the first time. Two-a-day drills start tomorrow with all the Bos- uns reported with the exception of first-string catcher Sammy White, still in the East. Errlelatz Gets Aide OAKLAND, Calif. WELCOME Charlie Grimm, right, yesterday welcomed four new players who are counted on to solve some problems for the Chicago Cubs this season. Left to right are: out- IVo Help fielder Frank Thomas, from Cincinnati; infielder Dick Gernert, from Boston: catcher Del Rice, from Milwaukee; and outfielder Richie Ashburn, from Philadelphia.

(AP Photo, Hal Filan) Cubs Smash Long Drives Over Mesa Park Fence By TOM STAPLETON MESA "We'll have to build higher screens," joshed Manager Charlie Grimm yesterday as his Chicago Cubs blasted more than a dozen balls over newly erected barriers atop the left and right field fences. And, although it was supposed to be "batting" practice, the pitchers certainly weren't just serving them up on a platter. The new screens, about 6 feet high, extend into left center and right center field, but they only caught two long blasts yesterday. Del Rice was the first to hit one, banking a shot off the left field webbing. But, on the next pitch he parked one over the right field screen to get even.

Dale Long also hit the right field trap. Big Walt Moryn won the home run honors for the day with four out-of-the-park belts. He hit two of his missiles on his first time up, and dropped a third at the base of the wall. Later he added solo blasts on separate trips into the cage. Bob Will lost a pair and Dale Long, Ron Santon, Sam Drake, Lou Johnson, and Harry Bright all ran the Cubs' expense account up with in-orbit blasts.

Frank Thomas, hoping for a comeback year after a letdown with Cincinnati last season, got plenty of good wood on the ball, but his two longest shots were to dead center field and remained "in play." Despite the cannonading, Cub pitchers were impressive too. Jack Warner, wind-up hurler for the day, was really bearing down. "That boy's ready," said Richie Ashburn as he fouled off a fast ball. Ben Johnson, Don Elston, Steve Ridzik, Gordie Gore, Dave Jolly, and Dick Burwell also took turns on the hill, and they all were moving that ball around. Some of them moved the batters around a bit, too, as early-season wildness added some spice to their stuff. There was more than a little grumbling among the batters about the way the pitchers were bearing down so hard so early.

"In 14 years I've never seen curves before on my second day of batting practice," said Art Schult, infielder. Everyone but infielder Tony Taylor is in camp, and Taylor has permission to report late. The Cubs lost services of big George Altman for perhaps a few days. Altmnn hasn't been feeling well and, although he suited up for action yesterday, Grimm decided not to take any chances and sent him to Mesa Southside Hospital for a checkup. A preliminary diagnosis indicated either malaria or hookworm.
