This was due in part to the fact that summer is vacation time. However, heat played the greatest role in diminished attendance at the clubs. Last Saturday was a scorcher but nevertheless we enjoved a comfortable afternoon playing chess at the Franfclin Club.

The gang was all there air conditioning certainly brings them out. More clubs should follow the lead of the Franklin, the first club to furnish summer comfort for their members. The 30-30 tournament is attracting a great deal of interest among the membeis. Over 20 have catered the lists with more signing up every week. Phil Driver, chairman of the chess committee, is in charge.

The 30-30 130 moves in 30 minutest is an Innovation in Philadelphia but a tournament conducted on this basis proved very successful at the Marshall Club of New York. The correspondence match with the Argentine is now reaching the Interesting stage where the boya will have to watch their step. It i still loo early to predict the outcome. THE ART OF CHECKMATE Ceorges Renaud and Victor Kahn have compiled a really interesting book dealing generally with combination play but more specifically with combinations leading to checkmate. Their approach is novel and interesting.

Starting with, the bare essentials they take a typical mate and then illustrate lta application by examples from master play. We like their method and feel that this book is a welcome addition to our chess library. Simon and Schuster, publishers. 630 Fifth New York 20. N.
