bulging eyes, big nose and fiery red hair made him 'physically equipped to be a clown' Obituaries Marty Feldman, 49, British actor, TV comic, movie star and writer Marty Feldman, 49, the madcap British comedian who said his features bulging eyes, large nose and fiery red hair made him a "walking sight gag," died Thursday night in 'his hotel in Mexico City, hours after completing his role in the movie Yellowbeard. Associates said he suffered a massive heart attack after returning from work at Churubusco Studios in a suburb south of Mexico City. The Orion Pictures Co. spoof of pirate films, also starring Madeline Kahn and John Cleese, is being shot there. Noted in Europe for his irreverent humor, Mr.

Feldman made his American film debut as Igor in Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein in 1974. He became an immediate star. A number of collaborations with Brooks followed, including High Anxiety and Silent Movie. In 1977, he made his debut as a writer-director in The Last Remake of Beau Geste. His other movies included The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother and In God We Trust, made in 1981.

His move into multiple roles as writer-director-actor was inevitable, according to Barry Took, a major figure in British comedy, who said that his former writing partner could never accept the fact "that no one really can do it all." Took said that Mr. Feldman drew on his study of classic comedians for his inspiration. As a boy in London, he skipped classes to see his idols Danny Kaye, Harpo Marx, Laurel and Hardy and Buster Keaton. "He always thought of himself as the youngest Marx Brother," Took said. "He was that kind of comic." But the comedian felt his appearance dominated his work.

His face, he said, "is me, the sum total of the disasters of my life." nose is testimony to the fact that I was a poor fighter. My eyes are the product of a thyroid condition that resulted from an accident. And the scar on my forehead proves that I'm a very bad cricket player. "Physically, I'm equipped to be a clown." His appearance proved to be a challenge to all who reviewed his work. A critic for the London Daily Express came up with what proved to be Mr.

Feldman's favorite line: "He looked like something that had fallen off the roof of Notre Dame Cathedral in a thunderstorm." The comedian frequently cited the description and added that he was sure he owed his popularity to his "Gothic good looks." The face played a role in every job he had ever held, he told interviewers. But it didn't bring him success. He had a long list of notable failures before teaming up with Peter Sellers to play character parts on British TV. His work on television made him a cult figure throughout Europe. It also brought him an invitation to Hollywood, a town he described as "the richest ghetto in the world." Despite his seeming brash a assurance, his wife, Lauretta, said there was another Marty Feldman, a romantic, modest, sensitive man who liked to write poetry and who often retired to the bath to think.

The comedian agreed and then turned the description into a bathroom joke. Once, in a more introspective mood, he told an interviewer that his life was like a movie, that he was sure someone was about to shout from the sidelines: "Cut cut! We're going to have to go back and reshoot the whole In addition to his wife, he is survived by his mother, Cecilia Feldman. Funeral arrangements were incomplete. Halina Preston, Holocaust figure Halina Wind Preston, 60, a teacher and a survivor of the Holocaust, died Thursday after open-heart surgery at Hahnemann University Hospital. She lived in Hyde Park near Wilmington.

She had survived the Nazi slaughter, she said, only because she willed herself to survive. She knew she had to survive, she said, because someone had to tell the world what had happened to the Jews in Eastern Europe. The drive to tell the world about the horrors, she told interviewers, was held in common by those who survived the ghetto and the concentration camp. "The need to tell is something you will hear from each and every survivor," she said. And for 30 years Mrs.

Preston met that need, touring the country to speak to all who would listen. She particularly sought to reach "the children who don't even know who Hitler was." She urged that "the lesson of the Holocaust" be taught in school to ensure that the tragedy never be repeated. To that end, she founded the Delaware Holocaust Education Committee and served as its chairwoman and as chairwoman of the Holocaust Education Fund. A native of Turka, Poland, she had been scheduled to come to the United States to study at the Jewish Theological Seminary in 1939. But she was trapped by the outbreak of World War II.
