Better of the pair is "The 49th Man," which pits security agents against those intent upon present- ling San Francisco with an atomic surprise. Skipping nimbly from here to there that is, from New Mexico to New York, New London, Marseilles, Washington and off to San Francisco and Nevada's Frenchman Flat testing grounds Ivan Tors' yarn plays fast and loose with the audience's nerves.

MVSTERIOUS CASES According the story the TJ. S. Government is playing at war games while the enemy is playing for keeps. So not being let in on anybody's secret, John Ireland is assigned to find out who or what is behind the mysterious little cases containing parts of a newfangled atomic bomb which keep turning up in the most unlikely places. He does, at considerable risk.

Chasing along through the mazes of the script are Richard Denning, Robert C. Foulk, Richard Avonde and assorted others. Fred F. Sears directed. TECHNICOLOR DIVE "Flame of Calcutta" takes a high Technicolor dive into the past, setting its dizzy action in India of the 1760s and pitting a fast-riding, fast-talking French damsel against the wicked hordes of the potentate responsible for her daddy's death.

Nobody, from director Seymour Friedman to the players, takes the script seriously, which is just as well. Denise Darcel is the active and practically unintelligible "Flame," Patric Knowles, her sweetheart, and George Keymas, leering Prince Lehan. And with the arrival of the pair at the Stanley on Saturday, all the management had to worry about mas the theater's going up via spontaneous combustion. Rowdy, ribald and uproarious, this modernized. Technicolor revamp of the Anita Loos-Joseph Fields! comedy of the Twenties has it all over its footlight model, with or without music.

CURVES NOT ALL The presence of Miss Monroe, America's steam-heated Cinderella story in the flesh, and of Miss Russell, whbse curves need bow to no competition, guarantees pop-eyed attention. But it's not looks alone, helpful though they certainly are, which carry 1953's Lorelei Lee and her pal, Dorothy Shaw, through in triumphant fashion. As directed by an appreciative Howard Hawks, and supported by Charles Lederer's streamlined script, the piratical pair go their light-hearted, gold-digging way from New York to Paris with bounce and gusto. Looking almost more undressed when covered clear to their pretty chins in form-hugging gowns, or blithely exhibiting their well-stacked torsos in as little as the law allows, the Monroe-Russell combination smashes over the comedy in no uncertain terms. MARILYN ALSO SINGS What's more, though Jane's way with a song is no news, sleepy-eyed, hip-swinging Marilyn blossoms out as a brand new musical comedy queen.

She dances and (unless technicians are playing tricks on us) displays a sultry singing voice which fits her personality right down to the well- known T. Literally, you haven't heard anything yet, until you hear Marilyn give forth (naught lyrics and all) in "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend," her own sultry version of "Bye, Bye, Baby" and, with Jane, in "When Love Goes Wrong" (new number by Hoagy Carmichael and Harold Adam-son) and the famous "Two Little Girls From Little Rock." MISS RUSSELL SCORES Miss Russell has her innings and i plenty of them. She does a wonder-! fnl imitation of Marilyn in a French courtroom scene, cutting loose with everything she has in crystal-fringed tights and the "Diamonds" ditty. And she has a splashy shipboard Carmichael a i fith A Air-rm d. "(Mf Limits" "Prinre of Pirates" Admiral 2sot Air- Ritii Haj-svorth Salome" Tech.

Lavish staging doesn't over- whelm the scintillating stars, nor do plot complications dim their gorgeous glow. If you can keep your mind on anybody else with Marilyn and Jane around every moment, Charles Coburn manages to be pretty funny as the skirt-chasing owner of a diamond mine; Elliott Reid extracts amusement from the role of private detective hired to watch stuffy Tommy Noo-nan's gallivanting fiancee, and George Winslow, the kid with the big voice, puts in a couple of uproarious appearances as Mr. Henry Spofford, 3d.
