I thought we played hard. We had a good run in the fourth quarter, but weren't able to get even. We made the run and made the mistakes." Said Nance, who led Suns scorers with 23 points: "Turnovers have been haunting us the last few games. And Doc? He's such a great player, it's just fun getting to play against him." But there was one other item that should not be overlooked. It was a shot out of the hands of all-star guard Dennis Johnson a shot that was so badly off target that it seemd inconceivable that it should ever have left D.

Only then did the mass of people in the stands head for home. They no doubt were home in bed by the time Erving finally came out of the shower, celebrating quietly within himself. "On the alley-oop pass, I knew it was coming, because they got away with it before. "This time, though, I saw it before it came.

In fact, I saw it two passes before it came. "The only question I had at the time was, I didn't know if I could jump high enough to hit it. I knew I probably couldn't catch it. But I did, and that was it." Well, it was it, although the purists would argue that there was more involved in the late going in this game. And perhaps they'd be right.

After all, it took a load of good luck for the Sixers to escape with their 14th victory in 17 games, because Phoenix, up intil the last 4 minutes of the game, was very efficiently putting together one of its best all-around games of the season. But in the fourth quarter, the Suns collapsed perhaps because of Er-ving's two steals. There was the aforementioned offensive foul by Adams. Then, with 1:50 left, guard Walter Davis calmly passed the ball to the Gorilla in the stands, which was followed two possessions later by the most blatant of sins. Adamas, standing out of bounds along the sideline, could not get a pass inbounds within five seconds, and so the Suns had to give it up once again, preserving for the Sixers a 110-104 lead with 1:21 to go.

"They had a lot of chances to take the lead," said Sixers guard Maurice Cheeks, "but once they got back into it, they made a number of costly turnovers. "Any one of them could given them a basket and could have put them in the lead." Nobody needed to remind Suns Hollins sidelined by knee injury By George Shirk Inquirer Stall Writer PHOENIX, Ariz. Lionel Hollins, whom the 76ers traded to the San Diego Clippers in October, injured his left knee Wednesday night and will not play tonight when the Sixers and Clippers meet at the San Diego Sports Arena. Hollins, who immediately became a starter for the Clippers, could be sidelined for as long as a month, San Diego officials said. Hollins hurt his knee in the first quarter of the the Clippers' 131-110 loss in Seattle.

"It happened when I was driving the baseline against Gus Williamsl," Hollins said, "and the leg just went out from under me." At first, it was believed that Hollins had torn a ligament or had damaged some cartilage in the knee. But when he was examined by team doctors in San Diego yesterday, his injury was diagnosed as a severe sprain. That means that instead of facing what is normally a formidable back court of Hollins and Randy Smith, the Sixers instead will take a look at Smith and rookie Craig Hodges. On Wednesday night, Hodges played well, getting 23 points on 11-for-15 shooting. Before that game, he had averaged just over six points per game and had 46 assists in 256 minutes.

At strong forward, the Clippers have rookie' Terry Cummings, the NBA's rookie of the month, who not so quietly is behaving like a rookie of the year. At center, Bill Walton makes his weekly appearance. Walton will make his fifth appearance of the year. So far, he is averaging 12.8 points a game on 44.9 percent shooting from the floor. He also is averaging nine rebounds per game, and in his four games, he has blocked 17 shots.

Club officials said they expected the Sixers-Clippers game to sell out at the Sports Arena. That would give the Clippers their second sellout of the season.
