Monday, Jan. 3, 1977 Philadelphia Inquirer Obituaries Erroll Garner, 53, jazz pianist who gained worldwide popularity By Leonard Feather Los Angeles Times Service LOS ANGELES Erroll Louis Garner, 53, one of the greats of jazz history, died yesterday in an ambulance en route to Cedars-Sinai Center here. Mr. Garner had been released from the hospital last week after almost two years of intermittent illness. Death was attributed to emphysema.

Mr. Garner, unlike a vast majority of jazz musicians, never learned to read music. Mr. Garner was born in Pittsburgh, Pa. The son of a pianist, he began playing with local groups in 1937.

He went to New York in 1944, where he began a series of engagements at small clubs along the legendary 52nd Street, before forming a trio of his own. Mr. Garner was an immediate sensation, achieving recognition through a style that owed little or nothing to those who had preceded him. He concentrated mainly on popular standards, to which he applied melodic variations that were rich in harmonic invention, often adding a guitar-like strumming of chords with his left hand. With the advent of long playing records in the 1950s he became a big seller, his most famous album being "Concerts by the Sea." During this period, he wrote his best-known com- position, "Misty." Mr.

Garner first recorded the music in 1956 with Mitch Miller and his orchestra. It was later matched with words by Johnny Burke, and it became a hit for Johnny Mathis, Sarah Vaughan and many other singers. The tune played a prominent part in the motion picture, "Play Misty for Me." With his records enjoying tremendous popularity overseas, Mr. Garner made his first European tour in 1957. The following year, he became the first jazz artist ever to be booked by impresario Sol Hurok.

In 1963, Mr. Garner completed his first film scoring assignment, composing four themes for "A New Kind of Love." During the next decade, he stepped up his concert schedule, which took him to cities around the world. He continued touring and recording regularly until 1975, when he was sidetracked by a severe case of pneumonia. The unusually melodic character of Mr. Garner's work enabled him to reach a wide audience.

He was seen more often on television than almost any other jazz performer. He appeared on the Today, Tonight, Ed Sullivan, Jackie Gleason, Merv Griffin and innumerable other shows. Mr. Garner was an innovator equaled only by a handful of pianists. He Robert L.
