Thursday. Dec. 2. 1982 Philadelphia Inquirer 9-C Obituaries Death Notices Death Notices Death Notices BUCKLE KOHLER REDL0W Robert Coote, 73, British actor; was Pickering in 'My Fair Lady' 1 restrain the grandiose instincts of his associates so their capers would be profitable enough to fulfill their Robin Hood goals. He was delighted by the success of that hour-long.

Sunday night series, but refused to let it anchor him. He insisted on retaining his mobility, maintaining apartments in Beverly HiJls and London, as well as New York, all "10 hours from anywhere." He did so, he said, because he never wanted to be caught "sitting around, waiting to be called" for a role. "I know lots of actors who used to be exciting," he said in a 1965 interview. "They sat around for 30 years waiting for those calls and dissipated their talents. They could have done a lot, but they settled for manana.

You know and I know that manana never comes." Working in show business had made him a dull man, he maintained, and was one reason he was "an ex-husband." His daily routine in New Wk consisted of taking a swim and catching some sun before going to the theater, he said; he found time for friends only after the curtain fell. "If I didn't love the theater," he said, "I wouldn't live this way. Frankly, I enjoy myself most when the curtain drops and 1 go to Sardi's and have a scotch. It's the best part of my day." The son of British comedian Bert Coote, he grew up in the theater being "introduced early to a monastic lile." as he put it. World War II provided the only interruption to his career.

He flew with the KAK. serving as a squadron leader. He is survived by a sister. Peggy Coote Caswell, who lives in Sussex, England, funeral plans were incomplete yesterday. By Burr Van Atla Inquirer Staff Writer Robert Coote, 7 J.

the British character actor, died Nov. 25 at the New York Athletic Club, his home when he was in Manhattan. Mr. Coote, who also maintained homes in Los Angeles and London, had been working on a role in Anthony Shaffer's Whodunnit, a thriller scheduled for a Dec. 17 Broadway opening.

He left the cast last month, associates said, when he was found to be suffering from "alarmingly high" blood pressure. A veteran of 57 years in the theater, he most often appeared as the prototype Englishman toothy, tweedy and distinguished, a bit of a bum bier but clearly a man who would get the job done and he invariably won acclaim in the roles. Although he was a regular on the London stage and a veteran of Hollywood, he didn't make his Broadway debut until 1953, hen he appeared with Rex Harrison and Lilli Palmer in The Love Four Colonels. A year later, he won critics' praise for his work in Dear Charles with Tallulah Bankhead. He rejoined Harrison in 1956, appearing as Col.

Pickering when My Fair Lady opened on Broadway, and went on to play that role on an international tour that included London and Moscow. In I960, he played King Pellinore in Lerner and Lowe's Camelot. His last major stage appearance was in Bedroom Farce in 1979. He replaced Michael Cough in the lead of the Alan Ayckbourn comedy. His reputation as an actor who could play anything was launched at the start of his career when, at the age of 16.
