Tho slock market appeared frightened today viewing in retrospect its boldness in advancing three days on end for the first time sinco May, moderate though the advances were, and recession was again in order. There has been circulated some- bullish but unconfirmable rumors this wee-k of plans to revive the long dormant bull market, hut traders appeared unconvinced, and anxious to take profits on shares 'bought at the recent low levels. The rails, in particular reaclccl after their brick upturn yesterday.

There was no aggressive bear selling, however, and the market was about as loathe to decline as it has been to rise. Losses in pivotal shares were held to small proportions, and trading was again dull. The opinion'was held in brokerage circles that the market had reached an impasse which wonldvnot be broken important news from business. The day's quota of industrial and trade news was no moro decisive than it has been during the- last few days. The first second quarter earnings statements have not been as unsatisfactory as the more gloomy predictions had indicated, and thero is a growing feeling in speculative quarters that the market may already have discounted the unsatisfactory results that period.

Tho commodity markets again gave a relatively good account of themselves, despite the governments July 1 estimates indicating increases in output of most farm products. The less active, but receipts were light. Tho market for oats continued quiet and steady, with both demand and offering limited. New -white No. 3 oats continued to sell 3 to i cents discount under old quality. The hay market, though quotably steady and unchanged in prices, appeared less active, with the demand quoted Wednesday for new quality failed, Apparently, to attract buyers, who in many instances are holding off in anticipation of a further break.

According to quality and condition, old hay commands a premium of $1 to $3 to a ton over new.
