THE rillLABELPHIA INOUIIIER. MONDAY 'MORNING. DECEMBER 25. 1041' a Western Film Erin O'Brien Moore Takes JTq Starls THPRSDAY. 'Meet Me in St.

Louis' Is Aldine Holiday Feature At the ta nto i Star Role in Neti; Play Tonightl AM days when Boss Tweed was Tam M-G-M many Hall ruler in New York City. Philadelphia's Wilbur Evans heads the cast which Includes Betty Bruce. Rose Inghram, Charles Ir 1 win, Noah Beery, Walter Burke, Fred and Elaine Barry and others. ROBERT JOHNSON WALKER I "Tall in the Saddle" rode into the Stanton on Saturday, proving that what the screen needed was a good western. And it certainly gets it in this lively yarn, the best of its kind since "Destry Rides Again" and "Stagecoach." With plenty of in- and out-door action, fights by gun and fist, short-tempered, sharp-tongued characters about whom swirl the hot breath of danger, "Tall in the Saddle" is a constant delight.

And so is Edwin L. Marin's direction, which expertly combines humor with suspense, heroism with the darkest, By Mildred Martin Hiding behind the very best grade cf Santa Claus whiskers, M-G-M came down the Aldine's chimney on Saturday to deliver "Meet Me in St. Louis," one of the nicest movie Christmas presents imaginable. Sally Benson's magazine stories celebrating her girlhood in St. Louis have been brightly woven into an enchanting picture.

And this amusing 1903 vignette, decorated with tunes. Technicolor and a practically perfect cast, is Ideal holiday enter- ta nment in which Judy Garland and little Margaret O'Brien romp off wi Ji both your heart and most of thj honors. LIFE WITH FAMILY IS GAY Life with father, mother, four sif ters and a brother when St. Louis wus getting ready for the Fair is ga and charming as set forth on the screen under Vincente Minnelli's expert direction. Grandpa's there, toa, to lend a hand or a bit of sage advice when necessary.

So Is the boy next door to capture Sister Essie's SPENCER TRACY, 4 Erin O'Brien Moore will appear in the leading role of Ruth Gordon's comedy, "Over Twenty-One," which opens tonipht at the Walnut Street Theater, substituting for the author-star, suddenly stricken wtih influenza in New York. The role will not be a strange one for Miss Moore, who has just completed a six-month tour with a USO unit in North Africa and Italy playing the same part in the Gordon comedy. Max Gordon, producer, reports that Miss Gordon hopes to rejoin hor company before the end of the Philadelphia engagement. FOUR NEW SHOWS One of four new attractions coming to Philadelphia this Christmas week, ''Over Twenty-One" also has in its cast Clinton Sundberg, Loring Smith, Millard Mitchell, Carroll Ashburn, Kip Good, Emily Ross, TtNNY onnnrwAV Ars Gala Itnllrlnv Show Edillc Hrarkrn. Wayne is at his un-derkeyed best as the hero who fears neither guns nor crooks, George "Gabby" Hayes nearly steals the show as be whiskered Dave, garrulous, grumpy, bibulous stage driver, a tower of somewhat fumbling strength to Mr. Wayne and the picture. ENTIRE CAST IS TOPS For that matter, though, the whole cast is fine. Ella Raines and Audrey Long are far from insipid as the Western and Eastern heroines who both want Mr. Wayne; Elisabeth Risdon is acridly amusing as Audrey's aunt; while lined up on opposite sides of the legal fence are Don Douglas.
