E. Hess Arbuthnot Feted and Mrs. Jim Arbuthnot were hostesses at a dinner honoring Miss Potty Hess on Monday evening, September 27, at the home of Mrs. S. E.

Arbuthnot. A buffet-style dinner was served from the dining room table. which was centered with candelabra and autumn flowers. Guests were seated at quartet tables. During the evening, luncheon sets were fringed for Miss Hess by her friends, and were presented to her by the hostGuests were Miss Betty Hess, Miss Twila Casterline, Miss Dorothy Tallent, Miss Phyllis White, Miss Delores Sheahan, and Miss Marilyn Adee.

"Laymen's League Meets Laymen's League of the Christian church met in the church on September 21. The Cloyd Marty, called the meeting to order and conducted business meeting. A group from the Concordia Christian Church Laymen's League attended 88 guests. One of their number, Mr. Mitchell, gave an address on "The Purpose of the Laymen's League." James at the piano. They were presented gifts by the worthy matron, which she had purchased in Quebec, Canada. Members were urged to take their used clothing to designated places as soon as possible. Short talks were given by Mr. and Mrs.

Joe E. Horner. Substitute officers were Mrs. R. G.

Swenson as Adah and Carl L. Johnson as sentinel. Refreshments were served at the close of the meeting. Shower by Cheerful Club Mrs. Carl Riegor was hostess to Cheerful club on Sptember 27.

Marriage Licenses Issued Two marriage licenses were sued in Republic county during the past week, according to Probate Judge Henry H. Van Natta, as foldo Raymond Cardwell of Scandia, past 19, and Irene of Scandia, past 16, on September 27. Garold E. Allen of Courtland, 23, and Betty E. Hess of Belleville, 22, on 3.

Mitchells to Mark Golden Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Fred Mitchell of Belleville will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary Sunday, October 8, with an open house from 2 till 5 o'clock at their home in Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell were married 50 years ago at the home of her parents.

Mr. and Mrs. George Milner, a farm northwest of Belleville. With the exception of five years at Lawrence, they have lived their entire married life in and near Belleville. Five persons, who attended the wedding in 1900, have received special initiations to the celebration.

They are Mr. and Mrs. Frank Mrs. Neva Stafford Republic, Bachelor, Mrs. Nellie, Stafford, and Will Wells.

Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell also expect many of their nine children and 25 grandchildren to attend the celebration. To Wed October 29 IT Mr. and Mrs.

XYZ Bridge Club Meets Mrs. Benton Bachelor entertained the XYZ bridge club home Thursday afternoon. Guest at the meeting was Mrs. Ralph Supernaw. Prizes were won by Munger and Mrs.
