Monday. Aug. 29, 1983 Philadelphia Inquirer 9-E The death of CHajviel 48 ii private affair -J i Lamps that fight glare: from Eliminating computer glare will be a By Gaii Shister Inquirer SMff Wrtter WKBS-TV (Channel 48) has chosen to go out with a whimper, not a bang. Unlike the day the Bulletin died in January J982, no reporters, photographers or TV types will be at the station today as tt goes through its last official day of operation. This funeral will be kept strictly private.

"We'll have special security set up all around the studio and grounds," Channel 48 spokeswoman Kim Kline said Friday. "We plan to make it very uncomfortable for any unauthorized person who tries to get in." "Going through the death knell, so to speak, will be difficult enough for all of us," said Channel 48 vice president and general manager Vince Barresi on Friday. "It's something we want to share only among ourselves." Field Enterprises of Chicago, own-er of Channel 48, decided last month to close the UHF station and take the tax loss when it could not find a suitable buyer. Over the previous year, Field had managed to sell its four other UHF properties. Channel 48 programming will go on as usual today.

In a bittersweet irony, tonight's Penn State-Nebraska football game a plum for which, NBC had failed to acquire broadcast rights will probably earn blockbuster ratings as the last official program aired on Channel 48. Following the game, about midnight, Barresi will deliver a farewell editorial, to be followed by station identification and the National Anthem. Then, after the signal from the station's studio is cut off and, finally, the transmitter itself is lurned off, Channel 48 will end its 18-year history-Kline said Friday that "about 25 Night Owl Stockbroker Kevin Waldron of Merrill Lynch in Bala Cynwyd is the new business editor at WCAU-AM (1210). He replaces John Battista, who resigned last month. The Philadelphia Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences will hold its first' Emmy Awards dinner and presentation on Sept.

30 at the Adam's Mark Hotel on City Avenue at Monument Road. Tickets are $45 for members, $50 for nonmembers. Treat (Prince of the City) Williams makes his TV debut as boxing legend Jack Dempsey in Dempsey, a CBS telemovie scheduled for Sept. 28. Beginning Sept.

12, Group W's "PM Magazine" known as "Evening Magazine" on Channel 3 will include "Marilyn Beck's Exclusive," a special weekly segment. Beck, a syndicated columnist, will report on entertainment news from 1 her Beverly Hills, office. Villanova's basketball team is slated for two appearances on NBC national broadcasts this season: Jan. 14 at Georgetown and Jan. 21 against Notre Dame at Madison Square Garden, James Kiberd, who plays Mike Donovan in the new ABC soap "Lov-ing," studied at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Fine Arts.

Word has it that CBS Sports will get $450,000 per 30 seconds of ad time during the January Super Bowl. NBC's price tag for the last Super Bowl was $400,000 per 30 seconds. Is anchor Connie Chung making a difference in "NBC News at Sunrise" ratings? Yes. "Sunrise" has been showing steady improvement in the early morning news war, registering a 1.3 rating and 15 share in last week's Nielsens, compared with a 1.314 for "ABC News Early Morning" and a 1.314 for "CBS Early Morning News." TVradio talk percent" of the station'! $2 staffers had found employment elsewhere. (Kline is joining independent KPOR-TV in St.

Louis. Barresi said he "Just has to dot a few ft and cross a few t's" on a new position, which he would not disclose.) Eight employees left the station after the announcement of its imminent closing. "There are three prevalent moods," said Neil Zoren, producer-host of "Weekend," a Channel 48 public-affairs show. "One is a combination of disbelief and anger, tempered by artificial enthusiasm. Another is total gloom, feeling slapped in the face by despair.

The third is small-town closeness, the kind you get during a crisis." Station employees will receive two weeks' salary for each year of service, Zoren said. They will also get medical insurance coverage for six months. Field Enterprises has 10 days to surrender Channel 48's license to the Federal Communications Commission. At that time, the application process will begin. Minority appli cants will get preference, the commission has said.

ABC announced that "Good Morning America" weatherman John Coleman was leaving the show after seven years. Beginning Sept. 26, his replacement will be meteorologist Dave Murray of NBC affiliate KSDK in St. Louis. Coleman recently lost out in an attempt to take control of The Weather Channel, the financially ailing cable weather service out of Atlanta that he founded but that was owned largely by Landmark By Grace Madley Jpiclal It Tht lnuirer Computers, now making sweeping changes in the work place, are about to alter life at home, including the way we treat interiors.

Observers such as lighting authority Jim Nuckolls foresee homemakers doing a variety of chores with computers: planning family budgets, paying bills, shopping, checking stock market prices, making airline reservations, getting news and weather forecasts. A lot Of us can recall when televi-sion was new 'and many a decor was caught short by the impact. For home computers, we may have to choose compatible wall and ceiling colors, be careful about location of windows and for the truly conscientious wear the right clothing. "Maybe Pierre Cardin could design a computer wardrobe," Nuckolls Joked one day recently at his New York office. Nuckolls, who said he uses a computer all day and is "close to being married to it," is president of Incorporated Consultants a company doing architectural lighting and research, and a past president of the International Association of Lighting Designers.

He also teaches at Parsons School of Design. The conversation that day focused on one word: glare. "Guard against C1 George Kovacs, left, and Home furnishings glare. Avoid glare. There must be no glare," Nuckolls emphasized.

Computer terminals and TV are similar, both reflecting brightness from their screens. And, Nuckolls reminded, the same advice applies to watching TV and computer terminals: Nevedo it in a dark room. The area around the cathode-ray tube (CRT) or video display terminal (VDT) should be evenly lighted to avoid contrasts, he pointed out. The glass covering of the screen is like a mirror; its shiny surface produces "veiling glare" in a manner similar to a page of shiny paper, he said. Nuckolls tests for glare by holding a pocket mirror up to the screen.

If a bright spot appears anywhere, he moves either the computer or the object being reflected. To illuminate work surfaces next to the terminal, he recommends a flexible architect's lamp, the kind that can be tilted in any direction to eliminate glare. Several types with necks resembling twisted tubing are available in table or floor models. Walls in front of the terminal should be reflective, that is, light-toned, Nuckolls said. The surface behind the computer should be dark; when the mother of one of his young charges suggested he become a model.

He registered with the prestigious Ford Agency, thinking of the jobs strictly as a way to earn extra money for his enrollment ol Denison University in Granville, Ohio. "The next thing I knew," he said, smiling, "I was one of Ihe 4.000 kids being considered for Blue Lagoon, and I ended up getting it. We shot it in 1979, and I didn't even know what a camera was when we started. The greatest thing about that movie was being stranded on an island for months. I grew up an awful lot." The TV movie, Raid on Shoit Creek, with Diane Lane, followed.

Then there was the disastrous The Pirate Movie with Krlsty McNichol. "You win some, you lose some," Atkins said with the pragmatism of a seasoned pro. He has much higher hopes for Heaven, which he completed just before Joining "Dallas." Set for release later this year, the film stars Lesley; Ann Warren, who won rave reviews In last year's VictorVictoria. Atkins insists, without overdoing the sincerity, that family is a top priority In his life. His Studio City home In Los Angeles County is within walking distance of his father and his stepmother, whom he rates a "really neat lady." He remains close to his mother and stepfather as well.

"A lot of time divorce turns into such a sour thing," he observed. "I was very lucky. 1 have two families with both my parents and steppar-gnts being like best friends." Koch Lowy, right putting the unit in front of a window should be avoided. Don't wear white shirts or blouses; ciarK is octter. nuckohs uses coiorca filters pasted on the screen (light rose is preferred by many) and specially made, tinted "computer glasses" to reduce eyestrain.

Nuckolls said manufacturers have failed to meet an important need, having designed only a limited amount of supplementary lighting to keep up with the growing use of computers in homes and offices. "With notable exceptions, the general lighting-industry has not begun to grasp the problem of providing lighting for CRT environments," he said, naming Koch Lowy, Luxo and George' Kovacs as the exceptions. As a lighting expert, Nuckolls also expressed concern over a statement issued by the National Academy of Science in mid-July. He lauded the academy's finding that radiation from computer terminals does not cause permanent eye damage, but he worried that the statement still might raise concern about the use of computers in the home. He said more evidence about computer use is needed.

While "poorly designed spaces will not be comfortable or efficient," he said, "the general public should not be alarmed concerning home use or commercial use either." A more contemporary best friend is actress Cindy Gibb, 19, who has just jumped from the MIC soap opera "Search for Tomorrow" to a newly created role on the now-syndicated "Fame." Her switch in shows has finally enabled her to move from New York to California, which should please Atkins' parents. "Even they think we should live together before considering marriage," he said. They'll have time to test togetherness even when they're iivm in iivmiiu. Lauai dim rami div shot on the same MGM Studios lot. "What I've come to love about this business is that it gives you the chance to be extremely creative," Atkins said.

"Some day I hope to write, direct and produce. I've already written a love story. It is a beautiful romance which is basically a true story. Romance is something I really believe in." That's exactly what Atkins' producers at Lorimar like to hear their newest star say. His assignment is to put romance back into "Dallas," and there's a half-million dollars a season riding on his ability to do it.
