Monday, Sept. 12, 1983 Philadelphia Inquirer 7-E Prism closes deal to broadcast its programs on Channel 57 COMICS By Ron Wolf JnOulnrSMff WrtMr Prism, the regional cable-television pay service, has reached agreement on a deal to make its programming available over-the-air on WWSG-TV (Channel 57), according to sources close to the company who did not want to be identified. Prism officials would not comment on the situation Friday. However, Jack Williams, president and chief executive officer of the company, is expected to announce details of the agreement later today. When completed, the arrangement will provide substantially greater access to local sports programming for viewers hot served by cable televi sion.

Prism carries many home games of the Philadelphia Flyers, 76ers and Phillies. Prism officials have been trying since November to negotiate a deal for the use of Channel 57 in order to distribute the network in a city where cable service may not be available for years. Williams said in January that Prism and another company were close to buying the struggling subscription-TV station. Channel 57 is owned by Leon S. and William S.

Gross, who have extensive communications holdings in the region. The station now is providing subscription customers with a package of feature films and entertainment specials known as SelecTV for a monthly fee. The programming is transmitted in electronically scrambled form and can be received only on sets equipped with a decoding device that the station supplies to its subscribers. The sources said the agreement provides for a joint venture that does not involve the sale of the station. Under the arrangement, the SelecTV programming will be discontinued and Prism will be broadcast in scrambled form in its place.

The service will be available throughout the Philadelphia area for about $25 per month. Prism is owned by Edward M. Snider, who also owns the Flyers and the Spectrum.
