Hernandez, batting a mere 462, Saturday, Sept. 10, 1983 is doing Philadelphia Inquirer 7 it all last night after leading the Phillies, in more ways than one, to a semicri-tical 4-3, 13-inning win over the Pirates. And last night Hernandez did do it all. He came up to hit in the 13th inning. There were two outs and nobody on.

He already had pitched two tough innings. Maybe Dick Williams or Gene Mauch would have pinch-hit for him in a second. But Paul Owens stuck with him. "Cripes, he's a good hitter," Owens said later. "There's no reason to waste a hitter at that point.

Plus, IDavel Parker was going to lead off the next inning, so you want a lefthander in there." Hernandez promptly drilled a single off pitcher Jim Bibby's leg, moved to second on a walk to Mike Schmidt, went to third on a wild pitch and blitzed home with the winning run on Joe Lefebvre's single to left. Then he went out and ripped through the Pirates' third, fourth and fifth hitters (Parker, Jim Morrison, Tony Pena) in trie bottom of the 13th. And he walked off the field with the Phillies in first place. But as important as his three hit-less innings on the mound were, all that paled against the march to .400. And that, of course, was all Hernandez wanted to talk about.

"I'm not gonna say I'm a good hitter, but I make contact," said Hernandez, who now has one run, one RBI and an unforgettable stolen base to add to that .462 average. "I swing the bat. I'm not gonna take three pitches out there. "I'd been kind of struggling with the bat lately, though. I think I was 0 for S.

But I ordered some bats, and they just came in the other day. So that might help the ball club a little bit." Last night, he started his at-bat by attempting to drag a bunt down the first-base line for a hit. It should be pointed out that this is not the kind of thing you see too often. "But I saw they were playing me back," Hernandez said. "With two outs you don't figure the pitcher is going to bunt, especially after I already pitched two innings.

But hey, they don't know I've got some speed." The bunt went just foul, however. So Hernandez dug back in, and Bibby threw a breaking ball past him for strike two. "I told Pena then, 'I don't want to see any more breaking Hernandez said. McGee's single, his third of the game, came off Cubs reliever Lee Smith (4-8). Ozzie Smith had drawn a one-out walk and stolen second. McGee then lined the hit to center to score Smith. Cardinals relief ace Bruce Sutter, who entered the game in the eighth inning, picked up his ninth win against nine losses. The Cubs had tied the score, 5-5, in the bottom of the ninth when Gary Woods led off with a single against Sutter.

Woods advanced to second on a sacrifice by Ryne Sandberg and came in to score on Bill Buckner's one-out single to center. St. Louis opened the scoring in the second inning, when Ken Oberkfell singled with two outs and scored on a double by Porter. George Hendrick hit his 17th homer in the fourth off Cubs starter Ferguson Jenkins and scored McGee, who had reached on a single. St.

Louis added another run in the fourth when Darrell Porter drew a walk and scored on a double to center by Mike Ramsey to give the Cards a 4-0 lead. The Cubs made it 4-2 in the last of the fourth when Ron Cey homered to center, scoring Mel Hall, who had singled. Chicago added two more runs in the eighth when Jay Johnstone hit a bases-loaded pinch single up the middle. The Cards extended their lead to 5-2 in the fifth when Smith walked, took second on a single by McGee and scored on Hendrick's RBI single. St.

"you sure pitched LKFT-handed tonight?" jandro Pena drove in two runs with a single in the second inning, and Pe-. dro Guerrero homered to lead host Los Angeles past Atlanta. The triumph increased the Dodgers' lead in the National League West to three games over the Braves. The Dodgers took advantage of Phil Niekro's wildncss in the second inning to hand the veteran knuckle-bailer his eighth defeat against 10 victories. Los Angeles loaded the bases in the second inning after two were out on three walks, and Pena then stroked a ground ball into center field to drive in Mike Marshall and Greg Brock.

Los Angeles scored again in the sixth when Guerrero led olf with his 28th homer. Pena (11-6) gave up only three hits before being lifted in the eighth. Tom Niedenfurer relieved but was tagged for a solo homer by Dale Murphy, his 31st. to lead off the ninth, and Steve Howe came on to notch his 18th save. Padres 8, Reds 2 Tony Gwynn extended his hitting streak to 19 games with a two-run single, and Andy Hawkins pitched a four-hitter as host San Diego downed Cincinnati.

Garner belted his 13th homer of the season with two outs in tho fifth off loser Mark Davis giving the Astros a 5-0 lead.

He added a run-scoring single in a two-run seventh. Niekro (13-12) pitched 7Jj innings, allowing five hits and all four Giants runs. Frank DiPino took over in the eighth and picked up his 16th save. Cecil Cooper's two-run homer and the combined six-hit pitching of Moose Haas (13-3) and Peter Iadd gave the Brewers the victory in the opener. Detroit starter Glenn Abbott (64) allowed one run on eight hits in seven innings to earn his victory. A's 7, Blue Jays 5 Mike Heath's one-out single in the eighth inning drove in Rusty McNealy to highlight a three-run rally that gave Oakland the victory at Toronto. Steve McCatty (6-7) scattered six hits for Oakland.

White Sox 11, Angels 0 Britt Burns hurled a one-hitter and Carlton Fisk, Tom Paciorek and Greg Luzinski hit successive homers in the thrashing of California at Chicago. Burns (9-9) retired the first 20 batters. Twins 7, Royals 6 (10 inn.) Kent Hrbek led off the 10th inning with his second homer of the game to send host Minnesota past Kansas City. Winner Jack O'Connor (2-3) didn't allow a hit in the 23 innings he worked. By Jayson Stark Inquirer Staff Writer PITTSBURGH Somewhere up along a Maine fishing hole, Ted Williams is probably shifting uneasily.

Here it is, the 10th of September, and Willie Hernandez is hitting .462. If he were George Brett or Rod Carew, hundreds maybe thousands of writers would be following him by now, chronicling his every trip to the on-deck circle. After all, nobody has hit .400 over a full season since the great Williams did it in 1941, but here is Willie Hernandez, threatening to pull it off. Some might observe that he has only 13 at-bats (and six hits), thus tainting the feat a bit. But this man has done it, time after time after time, It is apparent that Willie Hernandez is no fluke.

"I like to do it all," said Hernandez Phils beat Pittsburgh, reclaim 1st PHILLIES, from I to third, giving Hernandez an infield hit. Next was Schmidt, whose recent comments about the state of the club and resulting media reports caused some minor pre-game tension between some players and the press that disappeared after the game. Schmidt worked a walk, so up came Lefebvre, and Bibby threw two quick strikes before uncorking a wild pitch. Hernandez went to third, but Schmidt stayed rooted at first. "We had talked about it when he got down there and decided that, unless the ball was hit, he'd stay put," said first-base coach Deron Johnson.

"We wanted to give Joe a chance to hit." Added Schmidt, "There are a lot of reasons for not going to second in a situation like that. Say the pitcher is on deck. Then you're letting them walk the hitter. And by staying on first you give Joe the left side of infield to hit at, because they have to hold me on. "I just wasn't going to move off first with Joe Lefebvre up there unless it was a hit ball." Pirates manager Chuck Tanner was quick to acknowledge the wisdom of Schmidt's non-moving base-running play.

"If he goes to second, I'm putting Lefebvre on and take my chances with IGarryl Maddox," Tanner said. Lefebvre quickly made all this meaningful by slashing a Bibby pitch to left. Hernandez scored and then proceeded to finish up his three-inning hitless stint to nail down his sixth victory. "DJ Icoach Deron Johnson! spotted something in my swing before the game, and I felt a lot more comfortable in that at-bat," said Lefebvre, who entered the game in the ninth. "With two strikes, I will look to go to left because I can see the ball longer.

And that was great thinking by Schmitty, because they never would have pitched to me if he had gone to second." The Phils had to go such lengths because of Carlton's ongoing inability to close out an opponent. He is now winless in five starts, his career total on hold at 297. Jim Morrison had provided Pittsburgh a 1-0 lead with a fourth-inning homer. But after Candelaria's overpowering beginning, the Phils tied the game in the sixth and took the lead in the seventh. In the sixth, Bo Diaz became the Phils' first baserunner when he was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.

Carlton's one-out sacrifice attempt resulted in Diaz's being forced at second. But Morrison threw wide to first on a Joe Morgan grounder, and Carlton went to third on the error. Then Pete Rose got the Phils' first hit, an RBI single to center that scored Carlton. With an RBI single by Diaz and an RBI double by Ivan DeJesus being the key hits, the Phils took a 3-1 lead in the seventh, and that looked like enough when Carlton wheeled through the seventh, notching his sixth and seventh strikeouts. But Parker led off the eighth by crushing a hanging breaking bull into the bleachers in right-center for his 11th homer.

One batter later, Pena scooped a pitch that was six inches off the ground and put it into the left-field seats. And after Gene Tenace doubled, Carlton was gone. Karlier this week, McCammon was openly promoting Stoughton as the kind of player he "might be interested in." Meanwhile, Hartford has privately acknowledged its interest in Sittler. It was also ironic that McCammon would trade a right winger only three days after he had announced that the position was one of his team's greatest shortcomings.

Nettles, 39, and his teammates were drawn and tired after returning to New York from Milwaukee at the conclusion of a 94 road trip. Yet the veteran third baseman reached back for a little extra and came through with a two-run homer in the eighth that gave the New York Yankees a 5-3 triumph. "The Orioles were waiting for us and should have been fresher," said Nettles. "I know I'm tired and was before the game. But we must win three out of four to make headway in this race.

I hit a high fastball, I think out of the strike zone." Nettles' homer, his 19th, broke a 3-3 tie and snapped McGregor's 13-game winning streak on the road. The blast also made a winner of Ron Guidry (18-8), who went the distance for the 19th time. The victory reduced Baltimore's margin over New York in the American Leaaue East to four games. The triumph also was New York's third in a row and 10th in its last 14 games while the defeat was only Baltimore's third in 16 games. "I threw two bad pitches all night a hanging curve to Ken Griffey and he hit it out, and the pitch to Nettles," said McGregor (17-6).

"I did my job, stayed close. But when we tied it. Nettles won it for them." Guidry went into the game expecting to finish it and did just that for Associated Press Bo Diaz at second in the sixth DeCinces, who is a free agent alter this season. 3,447. Handle By Angelo Cataldi Inquirer Muff Writer The Flyer's traded right winger T. J. Qorence to the Hartford Whalers yesterday for "future considerations" two words that have brought a little intrigue to an otherwise quiet first week of training camp. Asked to explain what the future considerations were, Bob McCam-mon, Flyers coach and general manager, smiled slyly and then ducked the question yesterday at the Coliseum in Voorhees, N.J.

"It's just future considerations, which I don't want to elaborate on at this time," he said. The move inspired further specula- a McCammon also suggested, however, that the current makeup of the team "isn't etched in stone." Gorence, 26, played sparingly on the Flyers for most of the past five seasons, scoring only 109 points (57 goals, 52 assists) during that span.
