It's virtually a six-person film. It's a color comedy, but a poignant comedy.

It's not a high-budget film. It's a small film set in the country outside of New York. I'm probably going to shoot Ithis sum-mer around Tarrytown, N.Y., which is about 30 minutes away." TOMORROW: Allen talks about himself, about assassination attempts on public figures, about why he dates only actresses and about his personal and professional goals. and I don't feel as confident. So these people nave a right to their expectations.

And since there arc not too many funny filmmakers around, going to contribute that to the culture a reasonable amount of time. "I think Ithe publicl will tolerate my forays into the unusual some of the time, and if I can make those things wonderful, then they'll tolerate more of them 'cause they'll have had a good time. "But they have a right to expect comic stuff. And I feel the same way. I would like to experiment with serious things but only a small percentage of the time.

Out of 10 films I wouldn't do five serious ones. I'd probably do eight comic ones and maybe two serious ones." Again, this was a surprising response. Allen could have replied simply, "I'm an artist. I create what 1 want, based on what I want 1o say when I want to say it and without regard to the public." "But I don't feel that way," Allen said. "I'm not asking 20,000 people to buy my things: I'm asking 20 million.

"So I try to walk that balance. Now, Ingmar Bergman works in Sweden and works with a state-owned and financed thing, and he can write something about death and medieval Sweden, and if a hundred people come and see it, he'll just go on to the next thing, the state having lost WOODY ALLEN, from 1-L here in my living room wiih whatever, with Diane Keaton, and we were listening to Mozart, and I remember I had dinner that night, and it was so That's all you have those little moments that are wonderful." For the record, Allen's analysis of Stardust Memories holds up under a second viewing of the film. Its key scene and it's a magnificent one, once you understand what he was getting at is a two-minute reaction shot of the director's mixed-up girlfriend in the film (Charlotte Rampl-ing) lying on the carpet of his apartment and smiling suggestively at the camera at him, at us. With a Louis Armstrong- recording of ''Stardust" playing in the background, director Sandy Bates (Allen) eats yogurt at a desk and says, as the camera cuts to Sampling lounging on the floor, "It was a great spring day. We were sitting around.

Dori (Rampling) looked very, very pretty, and I was thinking how terrific she was and how much I loved her. The food and the wine and the breeze were wonderful and for one brief moment 1 felt happy, almost indestructible. That simple moment of contact affected me in a very, very profound way." "Now a lot of people," Allen said, "took that film to mean, 'Oh, so this is what Woody Allen thinks of us. However, the line 'between movies rated hard-R and those rated is vague. A number of makers add that the-y routinely make milder versions of their X-rated and hard "There really is no judicial answer to it at all," said Michael Botein, a New York Law School professor who argued the. 1977 ACLU case against the FCC censorship rule. No city council or individual cable operator has tested the issue in court, said Botein: And he is cautioning cities that they could lose such cases on freedom-of-speech grounds. Given the sensitivity' of the ject, it is no wonder that some of the corporations involved are nervous about it.

So far, however, they have not received much publicity about their participation in the business. This may be partly because of the way these firms typically market all of their video programming, mainstream and sexually explicit alike. In many cases, they do so through joint veptures operating under unfamiliar names, or through subsidiaries bearing different names from those of the parent companies. The Escapade "adult" movie ser- mercial networks express growing concern about adult pay-TV programming. Although FCC rules bar their ownership of cable-TV systems, each of their parent corporations has some investment in home video products or programming for cable.

The networks may also be worrying that racier programming on pay XV-could siphon off their viewers. While sexually explicit video' pro-'" gramming is a large and growing' business, it clearly has a long way to go before it is seen in even a majority of American homes. Although there are 77 million TV households in the United States, only two million of them have videocassette players arid only about two-thirds of those owners are believed to watch "adult" movies on them. ys Fewer than one million Americans currently subscribe to adult programming on cable or over-the-air pay TV. core films, either by changing camera angles or by editing.

These versions typically have no rating and are being snapped up by some pay-TV companies. The most explicit versions of X-rated films, the ones shown in "a4ult" theaters, are also the ones sold to videocassette manufacturers, said David Friedman, board chairman of the Adult Film Association of America, an organizaton of 280 producers, distributors and theater owners. Friedman added that the market for blue movies opened by the new video technologies has been a bonanza for his members. A producer can make "anywhere $40,000 to $100,000 in extra income" by selling video rights to pay-TV, videocassette or videodisc companies, he said. "This is just like finding money in 1he streets," he added.

Meanwhile, the three major com X-RATED, from 1-L its "adult" movies each month. In dozens of cities, from Milwaukee to Honolulu, pay-TV subscribers may tune in blue movies offered by either local cable TV or the scrambled signals of an over-the-air TV system. INone of the cable television companies operating in the Philadelphia area offers "adult" movies. Wometco Home Theater (WHT), an on-air subscription television service, will offer them, however, as a paid extra when it goes into operation later this month. "We will not carry X-rated films," said Linda Wolfson, vice president of communications for WHT.

But a lot of people felt it was an expression of my own irritation with them, and so they came away, not just disliking the film but damn angry, angry with me and outraged.

"So 1 feel they misunderstood it. And I only feel that way because there was a portion of people critics and. people who have written to me, some renowned people and also many fans who didn't misunderstand it and who loved it. "But to be completely fair about it, it's, possible I hoped to convey one thing and, through lack of sufficient skill, conveyed another. On a technical level, though, I thought the film was very, very full of ideas and flamboyance and some of my best direction.

"So if only it could have been taken without confusing the director with me, the reaction might have been But I knew that problem going in. I had spoken to my friends about it, and they. said, going to think it's you. They thought that about Annie Hall. They thought that about Manhattan." One would have imagined that the negative critical reaction to the' film would have hurt Allen.

"That's hot quite said. it or not, I got slammed by about 50 percent of the critics for Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex. But'I don't mind the criticism, so long as the person who is doing it is doing it honestly. If someone doesn't like something, I understand that completely. And I'm' the first one to think that I may have failed.

I don't sit there thinking' 'Those Philistines didn't get only time I feel hurt or annoyed is when I'm accused of things I don't feel guilty of. Then I don't think it's fair. There was a piece written about me a couple of years ago by Joan Didion I in the New York Review of Booksl that accused me of things that clearly are not fair. IShe accused Allen of, among other things, intellectual elitism.) And I felt that wasn't right." If all of this sounds so perfectly well-adjusted, it should be noted that Allen has spent 25 of his 45 years in analysis. One wonders if he would like to arrange for Stardust Memories to be reissued, now that he has gone public with his version of what the film was intended to mean.

"I think people 50 years from now will say, 'Let's take a look at Stardust Memories; it was his worst Or maybe they'll say, 'Let's look at Annie Hall; everyone thought it was so great then, but people think it's so horrible But I think my films will always have interest because at least they're honest work." "With that, Allen had brought up an interesting question. How does he think future critics and audiences will regard his work? Which films will rise or fall over time? With the media explosion of the 70s, Allen and his work have been evaluated with an intensity that other artists in other times have not known. Even though he agrees with some of his critics, he still could suffer over tneir influence. Foi example, somewhere in the back of his mind, he could be thinking, "I need a hit. I had better return to making my old funny movies." That would be what some critics and many fans want, but pleasing them may not be the healthiest move, for an artist.

1 "I feel this," Allen said. "I've always represented myself as a comedian and purveyor of comic goods. And I've always felt that 1 could prove myself in, the comic area, whereas the more serious areas are harder for me. "So I think it's completely reasonable that the average guy who goes to the movies is going to think, 'OK, we know he can do his comic stuff, and tf we pay our five bucks, we know we stand a reasonably good chance of getting our money's worth. Titlany's reports that 90 percent of its 70,000 subscribers pay S5 extra a month each to receive "adult" programming, and another pay-TV service in Chicago says half of its 50,000 subscribers pay a surcharge to watch sex-oriented films three nights a week. Moreover, two national programming services already exist to provide "adult entertainment" via satellite. In addition to Escapade, Private Screenings sells its "adult" movie services through cable-TV operators. The two report a total of 150,000 subscribers. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) at one point enacted a rule requiring cable-TV operators to prescreen and censor an "obscene or indecent matter" from their broadcasts.

But that rule was suspended in 1977 after a court challenge by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) on First Amendment grounds. A number of cities, however, have picked up the battle against what they deem to be obscenity. They have the exclusive franchises that allow cable-TV systems to operate within their jurisdictions. The City of Barrington, 111., specified in the franchise that it awarded this year that the cable operator could not carry pornographic programming, which, a city spokesman said, was meant to include the Escapade service.
