Bates, a native of Decatur, came to Phoenix in 1927 from Enid, Okla. He owned the Bates Motor at Five Points from 1948 until 1953. At the time of his death, he was employed by Packard Auto. He is survived by his wife, Ger eldine a daughter, Mrs. Reba Bates Carroll, Phoenix; a son, T.

Jack, Glenview, three sisters, Mrs. Kathleen B. Pastgrini, Phoenix; Mrs. Mary Lou Baker, Buena Park, and Mrs. Sadie M.

West, San Bernardino, six brothers, M. C. Bates, Phoenix; Carl Van, Amarillo. and James Algie, Ralph and Kenneth all of Dallas, and three grandchildren. Leonard L.

"Wilkes Services for Leonard L. Wilkes, 74, who died yesterday in his home, 825 E. Marlette, will be at 10 a.m. tomorrow in Chapel of Memories, A. L.

Moore and Sons Mortuary, 333 W. Adams. Rabbi Albert L. Plotkin will officiate. Cremation will follow.

Mr. Wilkes, a'retired conductor for the New York Central railroad, had lived in Phoenix three years. Previously, he hafl spent his winters here. He was a World War I veteran and a member of the Masonic Lodge. He is survived by his wife, Florence; and four sisters, Mrs.

Rose Smolens, Philadelphia; Mrs. S. Brenner, and Mrs. Arthur Michaels, both of New York; and Mrs. Sam Jacobs, San Bernardino, Calif.

Mary M. James YUMA Graveside services for Mrs. Mary Margaret James, 75, who died Friday in Parkview Hospital, will be held at 10:20 a.m. today in the Hi Jolly Cemetery near Quartzsite. She was born In Sauk Centre, and had lived in Arizona for 40 years and in Yuma for the Lecture Series Opens Tonight TEMPE new Cardinal Lecture Series will start at 8 p.m.

today in the Arizona State University Newman Center, Eighth Street and College Avenue. The series will cover such topics as marriage, narcotics, and world overpopulation. Charles N. Ronan, Maricopa County attorney, will discuss "Marriage Can Be Happy" at tonight's lecture. His wife, 1959 National Catholic Mother of the Year, will participate.

today in Bloom's South Phoenix Mortuary, 800 S. Central, for Milton Mendell Manville, 56, who died Sunday in Good Samaritan Hospital. Mr. Manville, who came to Phoenix 10 years ago from Boulder City, lived at 303 Carter Rd. He was a native oi Missouri.

A linotype operator for The Arizona Republic, he was a member of the International Typographical Union. He is survived by his wife, Celesto; a daughter, Ann, Phoenix; a sister, Mrs. Grace Jones, San Diego; his father, Peter Manville, Chandler; and a brother, Raymond, Manhattan Beach, Calif. Dorothy M.
