Ml. Moriah Cem. Three men believed by detectives to be responsible for a series of recent robberies of cab drivers blundered into a police stakeout team early yesterday and were arrested, police said. Police said a team of six plainclothes officers was on duty at the corner of Chelten and Park Avenues in the Logan section when Yellow Cab driver Kenneth Lowe, 23, pulled up with a passenger about 2 a.m. As the driver turned to collect his fare, the passenger, identified by police as Horace Bronson, 21.

of the 700 block of North 40th Street, tossed a rope around his neck and tried to strangle him. Two other men, one armed with a razor, the other with a knife, approached the cab on foot. Police identified them as Albert Davis, 24, of the 4200 block of Viola Street, and Joseph Harvey, 21, of the 700 block of North 47th Street. All three were arrested and charged with robbery. Lowe had picked up Bronson at Broad and Green Streets, police said.

Detectives said the same three men were also charged with a similar robbery in Logan that occurred only a few hours earlier, about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday. In that incident, another Yellow Cab driver, Tom Brown, 43, was robbed of $35. Police said Brown had picked up a passenger at Broad and Wyoming Streets and taken him to 13th and Rockland Streets. He was also choked while a second man opened the cab door and took his money.

By Burr Van Atta 1 Inquirer Stuff Writer Maude Irving Tait Moriarty, 81, a pilot who competed with Amelia Ear-hart for world speed and altitude records, died Tuesday at a nursing home in East Longmeadow, Mass. For a time in the 1920s and 1930s, she was seldom seen without helmet, goggles and leather flying jacket. She spent as much time as she could in the air. Her time on the ground was spent around engines and hangars, airplanes and other pilots. She lived for the time she could spend in the air.

She lived for competition and she became a winner. Mrs. Moriarty was born in nearby Chicopee to a family that owned an ice cream and dairy products business; Her role in life seemed assured. She was the product of proper girls schools, she said, and understood that she was to observe "the Toward that 'end, she accepted a post as a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse, a proper job for a woman of her station in life. She enjoyed teaching, but there was a problem.

"I always wanted to fly my own plane," she said. She had grown up around airplanes; The Taits her father and four brothers all were licensed pilots, And they owned the airfield in Springfield, Mass. She was determined, and she gave them no choice. They had to let her join them in the air. Soon after she had soloed, she took the next step: She resigned her teaching post in 1928 to compete in the air, "I didn't feel daring," she said, "just curious.

I wanted to explore the possibilities of speed and altitude." Her brothers shared her interests. They backed Granville Brothers Aviation Inc. and in 1929 installed the fledging firm in a former dance hall on the Springfield Airport. The Taits underwrote costs of construction of the Gee Bee racing planes. Zantford Granville, president of the corporation, produced a series of aircraft that threatened to sweep the field until aerial jousting ended with the advent of World War II.

And Mrs. Moriarty then Miss Tait flew them all, at least in the beginning. In 1929, she flew to 16,500 feet, an Deaths elsewhere with Turner's replica of a Gee Bee Maude Tait Moriarty unofficial record for women. And in 1931, she raced a Gee Bee Senior Sportster a two-place monoplane powered by a.350-horsepower Pratt Whitney Wasp engine at 214.9 m.p.h., beating Amelia Earhart's mark by 10 m.p.h. Her speed was 1 m.p.h.

short of the men's record. She won the Aerol Trophy at the National Air Races in Cleveland in 1931, setting a closed-course record for women of 187 m.p.h. Her victories were all the more noteworthy because there were few women who flew and only a half-dozen or so who flew the fast, powerful racers. The aircraft were not very forgiving, as flying machines. When Jimmy Doolittle -1 sweat-drenched after the rigors of winning a race in a Gee Bee was asked how the plane flew, he reportedly answered, "1 never did ly the S.O.B." One by one, Miss Tait flew the Gee Bees, working her way up in power and handling.

In December 1931, she joined Lowell Bayles, that year's win and worked his way from sales to finance. He served as president and chief executive officer from 1952 to 1958, was named Union Carbide's chairman in 1958 and retired five years later. He served on the board until 1968. A Cornell University graduate engineer, he served as a naval aviator in World War I. Survivors: a son, Morse secretary and corporate vice president of Union Carbide, and four grandchildren.

For five years, Miss Baber and artist Dorothy Gillespie taught a course on "functioning in the art world" at the New School. Horace Cumberland Disston, 76, former sales manager for a Philadelphia saw-manufacturing company, died Sept.

30 at a nursing home in Camden, Me. Grandson of the man for whom the company Henry Disston Sons Inc. was named, he grew up in the business. Located in the Tacony section of the city, it still bears the family name as the Disston Corp. He went to work there after graduation ner of the Thompson Trophy Race, for an all-out assault on the world's speed record.

They were to fly a measured 1.864-mile course at Detroit's Wayne County Airport in a Gee Bee, seeking to break the records both for men and for women. For the bid, a 750-horse-power Pratt Whitney engine had been installed in a Super Speedster. With Bayles in the front cockpit, Mrs. Moriarty had easily exceeded the record in practice. Victory seemed certain when Bayles was clocked at record-breaking speeds as high as 314 m.p.h.

through the tim-. ing devices. But he needed four such runs, and day after day something seemed to go wrong as he tried to reach that point. During a run Dec. 5, the fuel cap flew off, smashed into the cockpit and hit him in the face.

The Gee Bee climbed, snap-rolled and sheared a wing before crashing and killing Bayles. The crash was captured from beginning to end by newsreel cameras, and for 20 years the film was spliced into every Hollywood epic that included an aerial crash. Depressed after the crash, Mrs. Moriarty turned her back on competition. She cancelled her record attempt and gave up flying.

When she returned to Springfield, she was mar-, ried to James Moriarty, a lawyer, and became a housewife. He died in 1973. Her last contact with the Gee Bees was Aug. 25, 1979, at the 50th anniversary celebration of the company. She joined other fans posing for photographers with a replica of the "City of Springfield," the plane in which Bayles was killed, at the Springfield Airport.

Asked if she would like to take a ride in it, she replied in a quavering voice, "No, never again." "She was all class. Tall, stately and gracious," said Walter Harmon, aviation writer for the Morning Union of Springfield. "She was quite a lady," said Henry Haffke, of Vineland, N.J., who is writing the history of those who built and flew the Gee Bees. Mrs. Moriarty is survived by a sister, Barbara T.
