is something mysteri. in the flight of Stanley from the' 3issoula jail. Tlhere appears to have be ni no effort to capture him, although he has been heard of several times since his escape, and his whereabouts hav beets to the authorities. First we heard of biun on the hills above Missoula; down at Mrs. Coherly's; then at and on January 19th at Corinne, from -vhichl point parties telegraplhed they would arr'st hint if there was any means to defray c.rlp'.nes.

lie was not arrested. We have been able to understand why this man in, jail for mutrder was thus permitted to walk off unmolested and so confident no would be taken to re-arrest him. It is a in whlich the comntunity is and as it is ain unparalleled case, weV like to hear a statlemlent of the fa' ti from our cotemporary, the P.oneer. Last -Patlience is rewarded. The wished for snow has come.

We endured for long weeks the brightest of sunshine, the gentlest of balmy breezes, the most gloi rious nights-the ordinary winter weather of New Orlcans-with scarco a murmur. The 'embers" of '70 sent a glow into the "ary" nmolthls of '71 that has almost raen tcercd useless any other fuel. It has been a rwintcr unpairallelled iln Montana for high and clear, calm days. And now, withs only two months alhead before we may anticipate the spring flow of water, there comes a succession of snowy days, adtl the mountains are receiving a bountiful supply. If what has now fallen 14 not licked up by "'chinooks" the supply of water to the mines, considering the condition of the ground, should be equally as great as last 'ear--and the snow month is yet to come.

TA CALrcO BALL at the Scott House on last Friday evening, was an eminent success, considered from a saltatory, musical, gastreonomical and calico point of view. Some forty ladies were present, and not more than on. or tao ratternsof calico were duplicald. Tlhis sliows hw diverseare the tastes of Deer Lo(pge gallants, and that each has his own oplniion about calico. We have not seen a more or enjoyable party in Deer Lodge.

The collation was a credit to the HJouse and the ma.eri cuisaine. The particilpants held Mr. Scott to his word about "dancing while the stars shone," for Day had broken lances of light on the mountain crests ere all had said "Good night." lMaonle Jew.1s.--The Past Masters Jewel recently presented in Deer Lodge to P. iM. Judge Symes' legal acquirements are of the highest order, and his quick advance to the very front of Montana Attorneys is freely predicted by those wise in the law. We wish the Judge sncceis, and commend him to parties on the West Side. Masquerade HalL--Deer Lodge has had "Grand Opcning," "Masonic" sad "Calico" Balls, and has notice of a "Hop." There is just one novelty to add to the list-a Masquerade Ball. Mr.

John O'Neill, who Is about completing the Hall in his Mew Build. ing, contemplates giving a Fancy Dr es and Masquerade Ball, In about four weeks, if the suggestion meets with favorable response. The expense and difficult of procuring costumes are the only qbstacles, sad those may be overcome now.
