Rentch, the popular landlord of the old reliable Entler Hotel in Shepherdstown, was in Charles Town Wednesday. Misses Fannie Littleton and Belle Watson visited Hagerstown last week, and purchased an organ for the Snow Hill Sunday School. Mr. Jos. Goldsmith was up from Baltimore several days last week, and his many old friends here were pleased to greet him again.

Miley, near town. Miss Pearl Hughes received the gratifying news that her mother's condition was improved, and did not have to go to Roanoke's last week as expected. Mr. Joseph Jacob, of Winston, N. spent several days last week with his Palmbaum, and on Tuesday he and Mr.

Palmbaum visited Berryville. Brother Zittle, of the Shepherdstown Independent, was in Charles Town yesterday, and gave the Spirit office the pleasure of his genial presence for a short while. Miss Sadie C. Tabb, of Leetown, has completed the cource of shorthand and typewriting at the Dunsmore Business College, and yesterday received certificates of News. Mr.

Charles Shepard, of the great Boston book-publishing house of Lee and Shepard, and his wife; and his brother, Mr. Henry L. Shepard, of Washington City, and are guests at Mrs. C. Horace Ciallaber's.

Mrs. M. A. Kain and her estimable family of three daughters will remove to Winchester, Va. They haveresided here for some time pastandliave manyfriends who will wish them much pleasure in their new home.

Mr. T. E. Grubb, of Chicago, (accompanied by a friend, Mr. Webster Rapp,) has been spending a few days with his sister, Mrs.

G. W. Banc, at Hichwoods;" as has also another brother, Mr. W. L.

Grubb, of Lovcttsville. Va. The many friends of Miss May Hamaker will be pleased to learn that this talented young violinist, who has been finishing her musical education in Berlin, will embark oh the 26th or 27th, via. The people are contributing liberally for the relief of the starving Mr. S. Lee Phillips will take charge of any goods or supplies brought in. Miss Mamie Hough advertises dress making in this issue. Miss Hough is a worthy young lady, has experience in Ihe business, and promises satisfaction, with moderate prices.

Mrs. Mary C. Aiken, widow of Rev. James Aiken, died at her home in Martinsburg, March 12, aged 60 years. She was a sister of Rev.

J. H. Wolff of this place, was a bright christian woman and died in full hope of a blessed immortality beyong the grave. Scott, the bright little four-year-old son of Mr. Geo.

E. Wysong of this office, fell backwards into a bucket of boiling hot water last Wednesday, and was terribly scalded. Fortunately, however, it is thought no vital parts were affected, and although a great sufferer the little fellow is, under skillful treatment of Dr. William Neill and kind ministrations of neighbors and friends, as wc are pleased to learn, gradually improving. The Citizens' Fire Company on Tuesday night last presented to President W.

F. Alexander a handsome gold pin, made of the gold piece awarded the company as a prize in the recent Shepherdstown contest. The pin, which was procured by jeweler Chas. W. Brown, bore the initials of the company and year of organization (1884).

The formal presentation was fittingly made byCapt. Jno. W. Russell, and present received by President Alexander with appropriate remarks. THE OAST DEFENCES.

One-half the number of improved cannon, mortars and emplacements will be located and placed in suitable position ere the expiration of 1S9S. The Artillery Board is constantly making practical surveys, so far as these relate to the army, and the establishment of adequate military protection of our seaboard is receiving strong endorsement. Watson, late Deputy Sheriff-, has bought out Mr. N. R. Roberts, in Middleway, and will enter into the mercantile business in that Mr. Watson is one of our most enterprising, upright and popular young men, and we wish him much success in his new undertaking.

The Klondike fever seems to have died out, and "Rally round the flag, boys," is the prevailing sentiment. The Episcopal congregation of this place has been for two rnotiths like sheep without a shepherd, owing to the prolonged sickness of Rev.

W. L. Gravatt. The associate rector of Zion Church, Charles Town, Rev. Mr.

Fletcher, of New York, has located in Bolivar, and will occupy the house of Mr. Jos. Jones, formerly the Gannon property. His wife aud two daughters will be here this week. Mr.

Clevengcr, formerly of Myerstown, will move his family into the house of Mrs. George Dittmyer. the residence of the late Dr. W. H.

Spangler. The annual flitting season has commenced. Mr. Bruce Russell will move into the Conway house on Camp Hill, adjoining the Methodist parsonage. Mr.

McDonald, representing the Vulcan Road Machine Company of this town, appeared before the county court of Berkeley county at its recent session and asked that it pay $5,330, the amount due the company for the erection of Back Creek bridge. Light. From the Guthrie Daily Leader we learn that Mr. Will H. Smithson, the present assistant secretary of Oklahoma, is likely to be succeeded by Mr. Lincoln McKinley.

The Lender says "Mr. Smithson is a Democrat, nnd served as assistant under Secretary Lowe. He is a worthy young man aud has mado a splendid official." He is a son of Rev. Dr. Rumsey Smithson of this town.

The kennels Mr. Goetz have already won a national reputation, and his dogs stand deservedly high. We were shown last week the picture of a black pup purchased ot Mr. Goetz by a gentleman in Philadelphia three years ago, and he is a beauty indeed.
