With sadness we record the death of Luke Ruddock, one of Cheboygan's best known and highly esteemed citizens which oecured Monday night after an illness of about one week.

Mr Ruddock came to Cheboygan some 14 years ago, since which time he had been fully identified with tho interests of this village, lie was an honest, upright, industrious and enterprising citizen, known of all men only to be respected and loved. For many years he was in the employ of the firms of which Mr. B. Nelson lias been the directing spirit. I'pon the completion of the Nelson Strohu mill, up the river, he took the position of one of the head sawyers a position he had since leld under the successive firms each season, ever proving a faithful and efficient employe, working for the best interests of his employers.

For faithful services he had recently been promoted to the foremanship of the extensive mill of the Cheboygan Lumber Company, but death removed him before he commenced service In that capacity. His domestic relations were extremely happy and he was pre-eminently a home man, taking his greatest pleasure amid his family circle. A devoted husband and affectionate father he leaves a loving wife and four darling children to mourn his loss. For years he had been a prominent member of the Masonic Brotherhood and his death causes a loss that the fraternity will deeply feel. The deceased was 38 years of age.

The funeral took place from the Congregational church Wednesday afternoon under the auspices of the Masons, ftev. A. H. Lowrie preaching an impressive discourse, in which he paid a glowing tribute to the character of the departed. The mourning family have the sympathy of every citizen in this their hour of sorrow.

The Ntory ol' a ItnMle'Flag. A New York paper has the following relating to Colonel Brown, Superintendent of the Soldier's Home, who is well known to many of citizens, having made uumerous visits to our village, spending considerable time for several summers in this vicinity: In the sharply contested battle of Cedar Mountain, fought on the of August. lsf)2, the Twenty-eighth New York Yolunteers, after losing nearly half of its officers and men, including its colonel, was captured, together with its regimental flag. I he flag bore no no name or inscription, but the man' who carried it cut a piece out of one corner before it passed out of his possession, so that it might be identified. It was never seen again by any member of the regiment until a few day since.

Colonel K. Brown, who was Lieutenant Colonel of the Twenty-eighth New York at the battle of Cedar Mountain, who lost an arm in that action, and who has since the war been the custodian of the piece cut from the flag, accidentally discovered the flag itself in this city in a collection of recaptured Union colors found in Richmond when that city was taken in I860, He at once wrote to the Secretary of VYar on behalf of the survvi-ing members of the regiment, asking that the flag be restored to them. The request was granted, and, in pursuance of an ordered issued yesterday by Adjutant General Drum, the flag was turned over to Colonel Brown, and will be presented to the survivingnembers of the regiment at their next annual reunion, which will take place in a few weeks. Sadly, solemnly, yet sweetly sound the bells for the laying down to rest of the beloved poet Longfellow. Sadly and solemnly, for the loss of one pure soul from tie world. Sweetly for the thought of that graud soul's welcome to higher and nojler joys. "The Psalm of Life" alone vould win for him, we reverently think, Hie pure, white, everlasting flower of remembrance. His songs hare touched our kearts and lifted us up to higher thoughts.

The Bay City Tribune appears with a Sunday supplement, well filled, which it says will be a permenent feature hereafter. The house of Fben White, near three Rivers, was struck by lighting Sunday. Some queer pranks were committed by the current, but no one hurt. The Bay City Tribune of Wednesday makes a record of forty-five victims to the deadly pine during the past winter and remarks that list is not a complete one, as only the names are given that came under the observation of that paper. Recently the Holly manufacturing company brought suit against the city of Muskegon for an alleged infringment on a patent belonging to the former, in use at the water works.

After the com-meneement of the suit the company offered to comprise for $500, and Muske gon has accepted the offer. Wednesday of last week on Klockidy creek, Ogemaw county, L. Grunnell took a cant-hook and started a log which was lodged on the shute over the dam. The log carried him through the shute, under water, among other logs, but when he bobbed up below, though insensible, he still hung on to the cant-hook and was rescued with it tightly clutched in his hands. M. F. Davis, treasurer of Crawford county, was stolen at Grayling. Friday of last week A. D.

Price was arrested at Grayling, and about $5,500 of the money was found on his person and buried in a cigar-box in the sand under his house. Price admitted his guilt. He burned up nine $100 bills fearing they would be identified, if he tried to pass them, and lead to his arrest.
