Sprlnga Va that I will retire from the Attorney-General's office on tho flrst of January 1914 to engage In the praolice of law with Wendenburg I waa very much surprised to see this as I had authorised no one to make an announcement In fact could not have authorised any one because ths statement is not correct is true that I have had some conversations with Mr Wendenburg in regard to this matter but we have come to no agreement "I cannot imagine why this statement should have been made at this time unless it was dons to Injure Judge Williams in the city of Richmond in his campaign for re-election to the office of Attorney-General'' Mr Haddon was connected with the Attorney-General's office during the term of Major William A Anderson and continued with Judge Williams although he supported tha office of Acting Auditor Crenshaw for more than a month haa ruled on a case involving the same principle hs the ona in question in the Knowles salary mix-up thaf the Administrative Board la without power to Increase or diminish ths salaries of city officers without authorisation from lha City Council Ths matter of the Knowles Increase was brought to tha attention of tha City Attorney who latter half of the month of July ia fixed at this rata Ignoring the Acting Auditor's letter the board approved the pay roll for the Oaa Works which Included an allowance or 1150 for Mr Knowles or
