Those foui- hours leading up to the cancellation proved, however, to be interesting and exciting television and radio even if we have gone through the same thing several times before.

The three major networks provided, as usual, excellent television coverage. Their staffs consist of veteran Cape Canaveral hands, and their knowledgeable commentators seemed able to anticipate decisions by the officials in charge. It seemed ironic tJiat the great rocket and its Faith 7 capsule was ready to fly but was restrained by the malfunctioning of two pieces of incidental equipment. The most difficult job of the broadcasters obviously was keeping up a steady stream of chatter and pictures during long hours when nothing much was happening that could pick up. All three networks used material from previous space shots to good advantage and nobody repeated too often.

NBC stayed with the shoot for the longest time, including the post-cancellation press conference and live shots of Cooper as he climbed, smiling, from the capsule after his five-hour wait. We'll watch again for the launching and' those television pic tiu-es from space, The cancellation provided an opportunity to catch up on the fun, games and suffering dished up for the daytime audience. It certainly offers sharp contrast. I agonized over an old woman dying of Hodgkins disease in "General Hospital" and then watched with amazement four giggling women pi-esenting their husbands made up as "monsters" on "Truth or Coiisequences." The word is that the producers of CBS' "Passwoi-d" are disturbed by the similarity of NBC's "You Don't Say." The sets of the two games are very much alike, The games are quite different. Re0.

The first time, a night in 1913 at Denver's old Mozart Cafe, Frawley sang his heart out to impress a couple of buddies. "Damon Runyon and Gene Fowler had been heckling me to come up with a new number," he recalls with relish. "When the bartender passed me the word that Ernie Burnett and George Norton had been working something pretty good in the back room, I got myself in there to have a listen.

"That night when Runyon and Fowler started yammering for something new, I told them, 'If you two will be quiet, I'll sing you something so new it hasn't even been and handed the piano player the music Burnett and Norton had scribbled on a yellow sheet of paper. "Years later, Runyon was still telling me that it was the best song he ever heard." In the "My Three Sons" episode, Frawley, as Bub, stages his performance at his favorite hangout, Mooney's restaurant, to impress an audience of one Sudsy Pfeiffer, 10, and a skeptic. Bub, like Frawley, a former vaudevillian, is challenged into dusting off his soft-shoes and vocal chords when grandson Chip holds a raffle, with Bub as the prize. 'Gypsy' Yul Brynner Is Travelingest' Star By BOB THOMAS AP MovicTelevision Writer HOLLYWbOD (AP)-In an era when actors have reverted to their gypsy origins, Yul Brynner may be the travelingest star. Not even tlie ubiquitous Bob Hope has clocked as many air miles as has the smooth-topped Brynner. He makes movies from Bulba" to Japan and from of the Sun," which he just completed and occasionally Hollywood. He also makes lengthy journeys on behalf of the United Nations, for which he has worked in its refugee carries a U.N. passport.

Besides all this, he just travels. When he would get five days off "Ashiya" in Japan, to his Switzerland to visit his wife, who was expecting a baby. For the multitude of Americans who will be visiting foreign lands this summer, Brynner is worth listening to. During his brief stopover here, I queried him on tips for travelers. "The most important thing," he began, "is to remember that when you pay your $2,000 or whatever to the travel agent for your fare and accommodations, it does not buy you a piece of the countries you visit.

Those countries don't owe you anything. You owe them something: your good behavior as a guest in their homeland." Other lips: "Most American tourists take too much and bring home too much. There's no need to take a different wardi'obe for every possible occasion. Just a few outfits will do. "People still think they have to go to Europe laden with boxes of Kleenex and other necessities.

Kleenex is just as widespread as Coca Cola abroad. So is aspirin, and almost anjrthing else you would need. "As for taking a lot of washable clothes, it isn't necessary. In most hotels you can send out your in the morning and get it back in the evening, beautifully done. "Tourists shouldn't be too concerned with what I call the mechanical aspects of LATEST STAR hopping on the pilot bandwagon is Bikel, who will soon start filming Adam's Children for Bob Banner.
