KEPOUTER CLASSIFIE ADS News Of Home Remodeling, Redecor Culligan Offefs New Water Softerler Line A line of home-owned water softeners and water conditioners has been Introduced by Culligan Soft Water Service of Dover. The local water conditioning specialists will add this home-owned equipment to its regular soft water service operation. Leading the 1955 line are. a redesigned deluxe softener, a completely new low-priced water softener, and four new water filters, for solving other water problems. The entire Vine is protected against corrosion, Charles W.

Ricl, owner of the local service, said, by a plastic coating which is applied to the tanks' galvanized metal interior as double protection against corrosion. The new line is backed by a special 10-year warranty plan by Culligan, Inc. of Northbrook, 111. Mr. Riel explained that zeolite, the mineral which docs the actual water softening job, must be periodically regenerated by flushing with a salt solution.

Outstanding features of the improved softener are modern styling and a new electric timing device for ease of regeneration. A baked enamel finish with stainless steel trim makes the Building, ating softemr an attractive appliance which be installed in the basement, utility room, or service porch. In oie model, the backwash and rinse Hows are automatically controlled, regardless of local water pressure, Riel said. The homeowner sinjply pulls a lever and pours in salt, and the entire regeneration cycle jof salting and rinsing is begun ajul completed automatically. Baclcwashing, salting, and rinsing arc conveniently and positively controlled by a compact valving assembly in model.

The Homeowner need only start the cycle, adjust the controls, and turn off after regeneration is conjipieted. Optional features on this model include automatic backwash and rinse jflow regulators and an al- tractii'e baked enamel cover with stainUss steel trim. filters will remove iron, bad taste and odor, dirt, turbidity, and neutralize harmful acids in water. Black; or red-stained laundry or porcejainware, and the "rotten egg" odor resulting from hydrogen sulfide in the water are the most eomrrion problems. Save Money By Doing Own Painting Job Perhaps the most widely-used money-saving step in home maintenance is when homeowners do their own interior painting when re-decoration is needed.

But to obtain professional results requires more than merely brushing on paint. Of top importance is that the surface be clean dry and free of grease. Old, loose paint should be removed. If oil-base paint is to be used, old calcimine and cold-water paint must be completely removed with liberal applications of hot water and vigorous scrubbing. Plaster cracks and holes must be filled with patching plaster and smooth.

Where severe plaster cracks have developed, or it is difficult or impossible to remove calcimine or cold-water paint, it is often advisable and economical to cover the old walls and ceilings with plywood. The plywood is nailed to furring strips fastened right over the existing walls and ceilings. To estimate the amount of paint required for a room, multiply the total distance in feet around the room by wall height and deduct 15 sq, ft. for each window and door. Length of room multiplied by width gives celling area.

If woodwork is to be painted, allow 40 sq. ft for window frame and sash; 135 sq, ft. lor each side of a door and its frame (10 sq, ft. for only one side of the frame and 20 sq. ft.

for only one side of the door) and 135 sq. ft. for the average staircase. The length of baseboard, unless it is unusually narrow, is considered as square feet. With this information on square footage before him, together with a description of the type of surface to be painted, a dealer can figure the required number of gallons.

Good brushes or rollers are a requisite for a good paint job. If paint is allowed to dry in a brush, it is ruined for good work. When painting is interrupted for a few hours or overnight, the brush should be well wiped on the side of the can, rinsed in turpentine, wrapped in waxed paper and laid flat. As one delegate said, none of the 29 nations at last week's Ban- dung meeting could afford to build a battleship or acquire atom bombs. Talk is cheap, however. So lesser delegates talked about helping to overcome the economic fear in Asia and Africa.

In advance, they had seemed most likely to disagree on the taking of handouts from the nations who can afford to build battleships and atom bombs. But this was the No. 1 issue agreed to. Agreement was recorded in such fine phrases as "the assistance being received by certain participating countries from outside the region, through international or under bilateral arrangements, has made a valuable contribution." About a third of the nations who attended the conference are taking direct aid from the United States. Communist China was expected to make something out of Uncle Sam's big brother role.

But the Reds did not raise their voices once. Nobody said anything about the aid the Soviet Union sends to Peiping either. Once past this controversial issue, the economic committee speedily: fl) Agreed to exchange technical assistance, where one conference country could help another; recommended the establishment of a special U.N. fund for economic development; (3) recognized the need to "stabilize commodity (4) recommended stabilizing international prices; (5) decided small nations should process more of their own raw materials; (6) suggested that shipping lines review their freight rates more often and adopt a more "reasonable (7) encouraged the establishment of international and regional banks; (8) suggested a frank exchange of information on the oil industry; (9) urged speedy establishment of an international atomic energy agency to foster "development of nuclear energy for peaceful (10) agreed to the appointment of liaison officers "for the exchange of information and ideas on matters of mutual and (11) recommended furthering their mutual economic interests without forming a regional bloc. 114 Attend Bolivar Lodge Banquet By MRS.
