Collins Inquirer Theater Critic NEW YORK A political satire that was suppressed in the Soviet Union has become a major discovery of the Western theater. This is confirmed by the production of Nikolai Erdman's The Suicide, which opened Thursday night at the ANTA Theater. Britisher Derek Jaco bi, of Claudius fame, gives a powerfully affecting performance as a kind of Soviet Everyman contemplating suicide.

But the Broadway production, which almost overwhelms the play with elaborate staging, is only the most conspicuous signal of the comedy's sudden status. Other productions will be seen this season at Washington's Arena Stage, Chicago's Goodman Theater and the Yale Repertory Company in New Haven. The Erdman play was done in 1979 in England by the Royal Shakespeare Company and was introduced to the United States last season by the Trinity Square Repertory Company in Providence, R.I., staged by the Soviet emigre director, Jonas Jurasas, who has repeated the assignment for the New York production. The Suicide is a trenchant and madly funny declaration of independence from the mass conformity of the Soviet system. The claims of the individual are upheld against the power of the totalitarian state with such biting humor that the Russian censors forbid its performance in 1932 and have kept it out of sight ever since.

It was Erdman's second play, written in his 20s. Set in a Moscow tenement in the 1920s, The Suicide rouses one Semyon Semyonovich Podsekalnikov (Senya, for short, mercifully) from a troubled sleep to appease his midnight hunger for sausage only to plunge him back into a wild nightmare. Senya has been unemployed for a year and feels so guilty about living off his wife and mother-in-law that, when he disappears in the bathroom, they conclude he is going to kill himself. Nothing could be further from his mind, but the word gets around that he is contemplating suicide. All at once, the unnoticed Senya becomes sought after.

If he is going to do away with himself anyway, he is told, why not give his death some social significance? Become a hero. After a lifetime of humiliating obscurity, he could get noticed. The only hitch is that everyone wants him to give a different reason. He is asked to die for the church, for the intelligentsia, for art. An upstairs tenant sells shares in Senya 's demise.

At length, the small spark of self in Senya catches fire and he denounces them all. It is then that Jacobi rises to a memorable height of eloquence in a performance that has been a bravura display of comic invention. In one oi the play's most telling metaphors, Jacobi's Senya acquires a tuba with which he pians to make a living, only to read in the lesson manual that one needs a piano for accompaniment. The big instrument coils around the small man like a boa constrictor, while his face reddens from the effort to coax a sound from it. He succeeds, at last, and the look on his face implies a much more important victory.

If the play had been staged in the same spirit with which Jacobi plays his part, it would be a far more satisfying achievement. However, Jurasas evokes the memory of the great Soviet director, Meyerhold who put the play into rehearsal in 1932 with a gigantic constructivist setting designed by Santo Loquasto and an hallucinatory, stylized staging that not only proves distracting but also seems academic. there's a word for By Douglas J. it a bad movie. It is not a movie you should make a point to see, but neither is it a movie you should avoid seeing. It is, to repeat, a nice movie, It is about a guy named Cletus Ifeyworth, who is nice, but just a wee bit flaky. He goes around wearing a miner's helmet and telling outrageous stories about himself, his family everything. People "find the truth boring and complicated," he says, so why bother them with it? Cletus tells a particularly farfetched bunch of "fabrications," as his labels them, when he applies for a jqb as a welfare caseworker, and so, naturally, he is hired.

The singing idol of the late 1950s who starred with surfboards, bikinis and Annette Funicello in the Beach Party film series, grew up a while back, but proves on the stage at Pa-lumbo's that he still continues to mature professionally. Much like that girl he sang about so many years ago who changed from bobby sox to stockings, Avalon has made the transition from those Grease-like days of teen-age hysteria to become a warm and all-around entertainer. He runs through a medley of the old tunes, which of course includes "Venus," does some nostalgic numbers from the 1940s, plays some trumpet, does a very nice impressionistic routine of John Wayne, Gary Cooper, Bela Lugosi and James Cagney auditioning for a role in George M. Cohan's Yankee Doodle Dandy.

Avalon works well with his pianist, Victor Glazer, and has put together a diversified show that marks him as nothing less than a topflight nightclub entertainer. He demonstrated his warmth and poise when he was told that Mary K. Lombardi, the preteen star of Philadelphia's Annie, was in the audience. When she agreed, to sing "Tomorrow," she whispered to Avalon that perhaps she better get rid of her chewing gum, to which he replied softly, "Just put it' behind the piano where I put mine." Avalon has a good-natured humor and a heartsy smile to match. At one point, responding to applause, he told the audience: "You make me happy to be working here." And then added, "But then when you have eight children you're happy to be working anywhere." Avalon will be appearing at Palum-bo's through Sunday, Oct.

Cletus is determined to find the boy's real mother. Meanwhile, he tells Jeorge-with-a-J that he is his father and takes the boy home to live with him. While searching for the mother, Cletus falls in love with Kay Lindsey, who is also pretty nice.

Two young performers, Treat Williams and Lisa Eichorn, play Cletus and Kay, and they do well, a nice job. Gabriel Swann is the boy. He has blond hair, fair skin and the toothi-est, most winning smile you have ever seen. He can also act better than most movie children. He is ultra-nice.

The movie was shot on location in Spokane, which appears to be a nice place. In the end why would I lie? love wins out, Jeorge-with-a-J is reunited with his mother and everybody does a happy dance.
