By the way, what Is to become of the ladles and gentlemen of Virginia, born to aflluence, with refined tastes, but now berett of means I wish yon would treat the subject, as you can so well, in paper." There Is but one way to treat the sub- Ject. We know a young gentleman, in vcius me oeat oioou or Virginia and South Carolina ia mingled. He was a Rood soldier, for he loves war and farming.

On the hottest days In summer we have seen him, hoe In hand, sleeves rolled up, arms nare to the el- bow, working like a steam engine from dawn until dark. This man, by pluck, by Industry and by prudence, will win back what his fathers won before him by means of the same qualities. 3tui DR. LIGHfHILL, PROM NEW YORK AND BOSTON. WILL BE AT THE M'LURE HOUSE, Tuesday Morning, Dec. 8th, until Saturday Noon, Dec. 12th, WHERE HK CAN BE CONSULTED ON CATARRH, BronchitiB.OffensiveBreath, Discharges from the Ear, Affections of the Throat and Voice, and on all Diseases, Defects and Deformities of TTTTH TilYE.

Requiring Medical or Surgical Aid, DR. LIGHTHILL ON CATARRH. Among civilized communities there Is no disease more prevalent, more universally offensive, moro productive of discomfort, or more liable to give rise to a variety of distressing and dangerous complications lhau Catarrh, in Its progressive stages of development, tbe senses of smell and taste are frequently lost, hearing and sight often suffer severe Injury. Tbroat AflacUonv, Asthma and lironcblal Complaints are feuccesslvely introduced, and Consumption la almost its inevitable result. Catrrh usually manifests ltselfat first In the cavity or the nose, but spreading beyond its primary seat, it soon penetrates into every cell, crevice and cavity or the head witn which tbe nattal passages communicate, and din used over the euiire extern or the muco-pulmonary tract.

The earliest, most prominent and characteristic features of Catarrh la a discharge from the head constating sometimes or a clear acrid lluld, but ortener or purulent yellow or greenish yellow matter, which ib usually secreted in excessive abundance, and assumes a verylfetld odor. This purulent substance Is discharged as a thick offensive Hold, or In hard llakes thiough the nostrils or throat, and frequently by both channels. In many Instances the discharge la of a very tenacious or gummy character, adhering to the diseased membrane with glue-like tenacity, and lsromovable only with great difficulty. This fact Is more particularly noticed on rising In the morning, because Curing sleep the purulent secretion hardens and accumulates with greater facility. The elTorts to relieve tbe lieaU at those times, by hawking or blowing tbe nose, are, therefore, frequently moat distressing I to the one affected, and most disagreeable to those around him.

Often they nave to be so violent and persistent that the lungs and cheat bccome strained and sore, nausea, retching, and even vomiting ensues, and severe headache or dluiness not unusually follows, and augments the general distress. In some cases even the most powerful efforts may fall to clear tbe head, until some lood or 8tlmulent is swallowed, and after which the viscid secretion becomes somewhat softened, and is then discharged more readily. Again, the offensive matter concerts into dry, hard masses or crusts, which obstruct breathing, and are very difficult to detach, ihelr dlslodgment often requiring the most violent efforts. these incrustations oome away in small hard lamps, or fragments or a deep green occasionally broad and flat casts of notable size are expelled, on which traces of blood may at urneo oe ooservea. xuu conaiuon ia very liable to ran on to serious ulceration, involving a loks of the bony structure of the nose, and subsequent flattenlngof that organ.

in cases where the discharge la copious, and of a Icose and fluid character, frequently diaturbes the sufferer's rest'by the necessity of frequent expectoration, because the purulent fluid is naturally more apt to run into the throat, when, as during sleep, the head Is thrown back. Should ex pec to- 1 ration be neglected, as may occasionally happen during heavy sleep', the Invalid Is 1 startled from his rest oy a sensation of choking, caused by the filling up of the throat with the accumulated secretion from the head. The nasal membrane is usually very much thickened and congested, cauHlng the nose to be stopped up sometimes on one side, and sometimes on theotner, and often on both, giving rise to a disagreeable stuffy sensation in the head, and occasionally to violent paroxysms of sneezing. The thickened oondltlon or the mucous membrane, and the collection or the puru- 1 lent matter In the nasal canals Interferes I with respiration through tne nose, and oblige persons so affected to breathe through the open very deleterious at all times, but more particularly so during Bleep, which, under such circumstances, Is i always and accompanied by a heavy snoring Bound. 1 A feeling or fullness, heat.

Irritation, soreness or pain Is generally experienced in the I nostrils near the root of the nose, as Well as I In the upper part of the throat, above and behind the soft palate, and headache Is rare- )y altogether absent. A distressing sensation of heavy weight of compression Is usually mmnlal npd nf nuor cialjy In the region Immediately above and 2 Sometimes pain la obstinately fixed particular part, as in the temple, on the top of the head, at the back of the neck or behind the orbits, and occasionally pain 1 tee if in the face 18 Benerally affected and be- 1 comes hoarse, muflled, 'weak or uneven DMal or an anpleasant snlfiling quality. Cough of variable feverity isnotunfrequently one of the ly mptoms and results or Catarrh. Tne breath Is usually tainted and assumes it times, an exceedingly fetid and sicken, ingodor. In some cases it i5l 1 oTtlngjy offensive as to render the KieSL008 10 blmaeir as well Theeense of smell is usually blunted purely lost In Catarrh, and a similar effect )n taste may be occasionally observed The are apt to become lrribible, and dlsSS excessively on exposure to the a.KariMa-SasrS1 IU uie stomach generally suffers more or lees ind becomes weak and Irritable; the appelte is capricious and is nearly always bad In he morning.

The patients generally complain of lassiude and fatigue, an Incapacity for either or mental exertions, a feeling or reigbt and discomfort in the region of the lomacb, and a constant disposition to rowslness and sleep. The mental faculties re also sometimes slightly affected, loss of aemory being more or less present. Catarrh may prove fatal, either by deblllEitlngthe system and wearing onithe palent, or by traveling downward, and proudng consumption. This fact has been so 9 pea led ly notloed that all experienced praconers now look upon Catarrh as one orthe lost frequent and important causes or this am plaint, but according to our extensive bservatlan It should always be regarded as premonition, and one or the very earliest J. lanifertatlons of Consumption.
