Fisher, in list of awards published last week. The mistake occur ed in the preparation of copy for publication. R. M. C.larkk, Esq, brought with him from Nevada and prevented the Gazette some splondid specimens of California grapes, of the Tokay variety, larpo and of a luscious, raisiny flavor.

A flock of wild turkeys missed their rockoning ono day last week and flew into our city. One was ehot by Major Cox near his res-i dence, and others were caught by different individuals, after an exciting chase in each instanco. After an unprecedented spoil of "squaw winter," Indian Summer soomed to have fairly set in on Wednesday, with all the delightful haraeteristie8 of that glorious sea-eon. Everybody says "long lifo to it." Personal. Our city has boon onlivened within a week by a visit from C.

Roland, formerly editor of the Ohio Eaglo, now of the Green villc Democrat. lie was looking prosperous and happy, and seemed to be enjoying his visit hugely. Our friond and former fellow-citizon Rout. M. Clarke, Esq with his lady, arrived in Lancns ter on Monday, from Carson City, Nevada, his present place of residence.

An absence of five years has effector! but a slight charign in his appearance, and that, if any difference, fur the better. Wejudgo that people grow old vory slowly in Nevada. lie will spend several weeks in visiting rolatives and friends in this region boforo returning to the SUvee State. We had a pleasant call, a few days from an old friend, (though by no moans an agod person,) Sir. Andrew Clayton, an Express Messofigor on tho Illinois Centra! Railroad, residing at Odin-Ill.

After it brief and ogreoablo visit to friends and relatives here, he left for home on Tuesday last. Beery, Brown Co. This firm has a new advertisement in our columns this weok, from which it will be seen that they are offering better inducements to purchas ers of dry goods, than ever. This house has. made wonderful strides into tho good opinions of the people) as tho crowds of buyers always in ultondauco thore will attest.

About to Leave. The Tiffin Tribune of last week says Wo aro sorry to learn that A. T. Bnrncs, President of tho Tiffin Agricultural Works, has decided to leave this city. He goes to Lancaster, Ohi 3.

to engngo In tho manufacture of Agricultural Implements and Machinery. Tho citizens of that city having a just appreciation of his a-bility and worth, offered him such inducements as ho would hardly fool like Blighting. The company ot which be becomes a member commences with tbo snug sum of $200,000, with an immeneo building, favorably located, already o-rooted, and with tho most Haltering prospecis of success. Lifo of We are in receipt of a copy of a voluminous and handsomo pamphlet, boing a skotch of the early history and life of tho phil osopher of deathless fame, for which we are indebted to Maj. J.

W. Free, a brother of tbo il lustrious champion and orator of Trsth. Tbo work is well gotten op and full of interest. Wo advise every body to procure a copy. i Konioval.

The Florence Sewing-machine agency and offloe of Geo. II. Smith, is now in tho room over Brown Storo, Rising build IngOI "One Poor Girl, The Story of Thousand" We." acknowledge tho receipt of a copy of a literary production by Wirt Sikes, entitl ed as above. Though in tho form of a work of fiction, there is un doubtedly more truth than fiotion about it, tho author having evi dently woven the story from facts and incidents which have oomo un dor bis own observation rather than from the funcios of an imng inative brain. Those who heard tbo lecture of Mr.

Sikes in this oity last winter, will have some con ception of his' power in the use of language, and of tho general cbar acter of the subjooti dealt within this volume. Tho book i worth buying, worth readjng, and its lei too worth laying to heart, 1 A Confidence Operation. A correspondent at Amanda furnishes us the details (for which we have not room) of a small confidence operation which lately came off in that village. The substance of the account is that some ten days since a young woman calling herself Annie Johnston arrived on the evening train from Zanesville, and applied to tho landlady of the Amanda Hotol for omploymant as a domestio. Sho represented herself as floeing from the abuse of a drunken stop father, and said she had not tasted food for thrco days.

Iler appearance and story touched the footings of the kind-hearted landlady (Mrs. Portor,) who, although sho did not need the scr vices of tho stranger, guve her a place. She was provided with necessary clothing, and set to work in the kitchen department. Things went on swimmingly until Salur day morning last, whon, having occns'on to get an early breakfast for a number of railroad employees, tho landlady sought tho couch of tho "gentle Annio," to arouso her to the duties of tho morning- But lol the bird had forsaken its newly found nest and flown. A prompt investigation then disclosed the fact that some 850 worth of ladies' apparol had also disappeared.

Then came the bustlo of inquiry, search and pursuit resulting in the dis covery of the fugitive at no great distance from the village, and her boing escorted back to tho domicil of hor benofactress. But oh, how changed in appearanco! Feather cd, painted and bedecked in the gorgeous apparel sho had purloin od, she looked like a city hollo in distress, a very picture of injured innoconco. It will vory naturally bo supposed that this piece of crinr inal ingratitude provoked an in stant legal prosocution of the of fonder but mark tho sequel. Af ter recovering her goods, tho land lady, in a true christian spirit, In stead of prosecuting, procured for tho poor unfortunalo a railroad ticket and sent her home. It is to bo bopod this treatment will liavo a moro salutary effect upon her than would have resulted from prosecution and imprisonment.

Bale of the C. Z. Ituilroad. By advertisement in the Com mercial, and tbo Gazette, of notice is given that tho above Road, with all its property and franchises, will bo offered for at public venduo at the door of the Court Houeo in Cincinnati, on the the first day of December next. Tho sale is by Charles Moran, Trustee and Special Master Commissioner, by authority of a decroo of tho U.

S. Circuit Court for the Southern District. Tbo whole concern must bring in cash. Messrs. Hunter Dauouertv, of this city, aro the Solicitors for tho Complainant in tho case.

Big Thin ior Carroll. We have a lino from tho immor tal announcing that he will speak in tho school houso at Carroll on Saturday evening noxt. Sco advertisement in another plnco. Interesting: and Valuable Pub lication. JTomes and Fortunes, is a hnnd some volumo of noarly C10 pages, which has boon issuod from the press of tho Peoplo's Publishing Company. It contains a compar ativo viow of tho resources and ad vantages of tho various parts of tho United States, describing the soil, climate, mineral, and agricultural productions, tho publio lands, with tho quality and prico of farms In different localities, and furnishing a convoniont and instructive man ual for persons who are sooking a new home in tho West and South Tho condition of tho Southern States as a field for immigration, affords a subject ot aponial interest at tho prciont moment, and is troated with the fullness of detail that is duo to its importance.
