I mfi i 4 10-A Tuesday, June 24, 1980 Philadelphia Inquirer THE ARTS Denver's formula still works Orchestra keeps it light 'ftJP iS'-! i 'kla, Dan Aykroyd (left) and John Belushi star as Elwood and Jake Blues, out to save the orphanage they were raised in Wrecking crew Too many crashes mar 'Blues Brothers' By Desmond Ryan By Jack Lloyd Inquirer Entertainment Writer Once again, John Denver has come down from the mountain to conduct services for his people. And his people about 18,000 of them at the Spectrum in this particular case were warmed and heartened as usual by the experience. The mountain in question, of course, is Denver's favorite peak in the Rockies, which he calls home when he is not on the road. But then, as anyone who is familiar with Denver's music knows, he is always leaving on a jet plane and is hardly ever home. If there are not concert tours to be dealt with, there are television shows to appear on.

And if neither of these activities is at hand, there are motion picture roles such as the one in "Oh, God!" to be filled. Currently, Denver is on his first concert tour in two years, and a near-capacity audience at the Spectrum on Sunday night made it clear that his golly, gee-whiz approach to entertainment has been missed in these parts. Clearly, Denver's music is geared toward mass appeal, and so the result is unavoidable. A sense of blandness prevails. But make no mistake about it: Denver is a slick professional, despite that laid-back, boy-next-door manner.

Nothing is left to chance. He knows what his audience wants and he goes all out to provide it. A plus for Denver is the musical personnel he has surrounded himself with on this tour. The background singers and support instrumentalists are all top drawer, headed by the likes of James Burton on lead guitars, Jim Horn on reeds and Glen D. Hardin on piano.

And Denver also paces his performance nicely, mixing his country-oriented material with such rock 'n' roll classics as "Johnny B. Goode" and "Information Please." Denver pointed out that he acquired an electric guitar and became so excited ihat he even wrote a rock 'n' roll song. It's titled, naturally, "Dancing With the Mountains," and it's rather tepid by rock 'n' roll standards, but Jhat's OK, because John Denver's people wouldn't have it any other way. There is also an above-average humber by Denver, "Wrangell Mountain Song." While it does not betray Penver's favorite theme being on the road away from the people and places he loves the song does possess a zestier tone than most of the others, which lean quite heavily on a self-serving point of view. By Daniel Webster inquirer Music Critic With ponderous summer weather here, William Smith battled back gamely last night With a piece of light summer music in his concert at the Mann Music Center.

Smith, the Philadelphia Orchestra's associate conductor, opened this second week of concerts with the orchestra by playing the Ibert Divertissement. The choice was typical of Smith, whose programs have the appeal of piquancy and novelty. The six-section piece is a parodistic one that quotes and comments on familiar music from other composers at the same time it redefines the usual suite of dances that make up the classical form. It is scored for small orchestra with piano and celeste and manages to sound bumptious and witty all at once. Smith launched it all without the usual rhythmic polish but brought it under control in time to make its humor outweigh its uncertainties.

Ibert's joke is in making the big gesture only to have the music immediately turn comic by the appearance of a trombone smear, a point of muted trumpet, or, in the final part, a huge piano announcement. Keeping the mood of the piece, Smith responded to the misplaced applause that followed the fourth part by saying, "Since you liked it that well, you'll be happy to hear there are two more movements," and pressing on. Soloist for this program was violinist Vehudi Menuhin, who was playing a Guarneri del Jesu instrument he had not played before at these concerts. Menuhin played the Chaus-son "Poeme" before intermission and closed the concert with the Bruch Concerto No. 1.

No violinists can match Menuhin's beauty of tone in the upper reaches of the instrument, nor can they puzzle an audience as thoroughly as he can. His playing continues to be a mixture of poetry and gaucherie, sheer beauty and jarring awkwardness. In the Chausson music, that single movement of super-heated romanticism, hejllustrated all the contradictions in his playing. The intensity of some of his phrasing gave the music power few other violinists can call up; the aimlessness of some of his playing pulled apart the dark fabric of the piece. It did not reach a cohesive and consistent level, although there were some splendid moments both in the orchestra and in the solo line.

The Bruch Concerto came too late for review. Smith included Strauss' "Till Eu-lenspiegel" as a prelude to the concerto. The performance was ardent and full of vigor. bombs, flame throwers, crashes and other mayhem like silent-film comedians. The plot of the The Blues Brothers is from the old let's-put-on-a-show-and-save-the-orphanage school, and the movie exists for its musical numbers and the laconic humor of Aykroyd and Belushi.

The film has a frenzied, free-form style that stops to allow singers like James Brown and Aretha Franklin to briefly galvanize the proceedings with a song that Landis punctuates with frenetic choreography. These interludes come in the course of Jake and Elwood's efforts to reunite the Blues Brothers band and thereby raise $5,000 to save the orphanage in which they were reared. The limits of these two charac-ers drive The Blues Brothers into repetition as their efforts to find their musical associates get them in trouble with the police, the Nazi party and a murderous mystery woman played by Carrie Fisher. Along the way and between the crashes there are some funny scenes, notably an awful country and western bar where the brothers try to sing something that will appeal to hostile crowd and choose the theme from "Rawhide," By an accident of timing it plays as an enjoyable satire of Urban Cowboy. Because there is no development in Jake and Elwood in the course of this overly long movie, Landis falls back on chases and crashes with the enthusiasm of a three-year-old kicking his blocks over.

And the need for a little discipline is clear in both cases. inquirer Movtecntlc When last heard from, John Belushi was roaring around the skies over wartime Los Angeles in 1941, an infantile comedy upon which Steven Spielberg lavished $30 million. The waste was reason enough for depression, and the blues set in with a vengeance with Belushi's return in The Blues Brothers. The director this time is John Landis, who has spent almost as much money as Spielberg in even more childish ways. The amount of money cast in the direction of The Blues Brothers is a valid issue in a review for two reasons.

First, anyone who cares about the state of movies can only be appalled by a multi-million dollar extravagance that consumes money that might otherwise pay for four or five more modest films. Secondly, the enormously expensiye free hand given Landis has gone to his head and damaged his film. If ever a director needed to ponder the ancient Greek wisdom embodied in the maxim "Nothing in excess," it is Landis. The Blues Brothers is a road movie littered with car crashes. Since such collisions are a Holly-: wood staple, Landis seems determined to set an all-time record for the number of vehicles trashed in one movie.

The later scenes of The Blues Brothers makes Smokey and the Bandit seem like a minor stunt in a parking lot. The film is a motley and often entertaining assortment of borrowings from other movies. The James Brown is the Rev. Cleophus James excesses that Landis has attached to The Blues Brothers interfere with its humor. Thus, when Belushi and Dan Aykroyd, re-creating their "Saturday Night Live" characters, Jake and Elwood Blues, try to evade the police, they go careening through the window of a shopping mall.

Because Landis was able to persuade Univer-. sal to refurbish a mall for his destruction, the movie marks time while the demolition derby runs its tedious course and every single piece of plate glass lies in shards on the floor. The running joke in the script by Landis and Aykroyd is that Jake and Elwood lead charmed lives, impassively surviving Show at Walnut postponed Evolution of the Blues, which was to begin a run at the Walnut Theater this evening, has been postponed indefinitely, a theater spokesman said yesterday. Ticket. holders can obtain refunds at the place they bought their tickets.

John Corr is on vacation. His column, On the town, will resume when he returns. MOVIE MOTION PICTURE RATINGS (G) General Audience IPG) Parental Guidance Suggested IR) Restricted.
