The Snurr of Jefferson to new subscribers, from now until January 1, 18'J8, for $1.50 cash in advancc. "Silver is the money of the stitulion as much as gold the people will have silver for money and light for it, and the contest will noi end until it has its proper place in the monetary system of the B. Elkins' Speech at Fairmont, June 10, 1804. Considering the fact that his name for auditor was proposed to the State Convention at Wheeling at a late many delegations had pledged themselves to Forrest W. Brown received a handsome vote.

Referring to him the "WheelingRegister said: whose name only came to the front yesterday, after the adoption of resolutions by the Jefferson county delegation, is a young man of great ability, rich promise, and the present Prosecuting Attorney of his couuty." The Democratic convention for the 13th Senatorial district met in Martinsburg last Wednesday, and nominated Mr. D. W. Shaffer, of Berkeley, for State Senator. Mr.

R. W. Morrow presided over the convention, and Mr. Shaffer received the solid vote of Jefferson, 2 0-5 out of Berkeley, and nearly all of Morgan remainder not voting. Mr.

Sehaffer, who is a ready speaker, was escorted into the presence of the convention by a committee consisting of Messrs. Ilarmison, Lucas and Strider, and made a ringing speech. "We publish in an other column an article from the New York World living a faint hope of a possibility of the restoration of sight for Mr. Charles Broadway Rouss. Should the experiments of Mr.

I-elts prove successful the news would send a thrill of delight far and only in consideration of what it might do for the big-hearted VirginianMew Yorker, whose admiring friends are legion, but in of the great good afllicted humanity all over the world wouid receive from such a wonderful accomplishment. Dispatches from Martinsburg and Republican newspapers say that in the Democracic Senatorial convention last Wednesday "Judge Lucas had his inning," and that "when the balloting came Lucas swung the Jefferson delegation to D. W. Shaffer, and he was nominated." The Jefferson delegation was chosen for Mr. I).

W. Shaffer, and consequently had nothing else to do but cast its vote I for that gentleman, which was done through its chairman, Maj. W. II. T.

Lewis. There may be differences of opinion as to the county furnishing the candidate being entitled to the choice, but in this case the arrange- ment whereby the Jefferson delegates were selected left them no and would have given Judge Lucas no swing, no matter how much he wight have desired it. Gordon for Bryan. Iiegardinsj the pending financial issue Senator John B. Gordon recently said to a Baltimore Sun reporter that he favored the gold standard, "though, after all," he continued, "the free coinage of silver may not srove as disastrous as we gold bugs iow believe it will be.

I believe in laving these great questions settled )nee and forever, just as the great ilavery question was, and we might is well get the silver matter out of he way. If it he tried and does not ilunge the country into a panic, the 'old-standard men will see that they not altogether right in their reasoning, and if it be tried and proves a failure the silver men will see the error of their ways. "1 know Bryan intimately, and I consider him a upright man. In spite of his radical currency views, I do not believe, if elected, he would allow the ultrasilverites in his party to control his actions. lie is a man who would feel profoundly impressed by the sense of his responsibility, and he would, I think, be much more conservative than he is widely considered." General Gordon is surprised at the acquisitions tothe ranks of Bryan's followers since the Chicago convention, whether they result from conversions to the silver idea or not, and he believes that "The Boy Orator of the Platte" will be elected.

Mr. Bryan expects to visit Washington City about Sept. 20, when a big ratification meeting will be held and a grand reception given him. Mr. Stuart W.

Walker, of Martinsburg, has been appointed United States district attorney to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Gen. C. C. Watts. I shall promise you this, that in the progress of this campaign not a single private in the ranks will stand nearer to the enemy's guns than he in whose hands is the standard." Bryan's Pittsburg Speech.

lion. I. C. Ralphsnider, who was before the Democratic Convention at Wheeling as an aspirant for the nomination for Governor, but withdrew his name before the balloting began, has accepted the Populist nomination for the same position. Elkins, Congressman Dayton and Hon.

Geo. W. Atkinson, made Republican speeches at Inwood last Thursday, and on Friday (Democratic day) Hon. Benton McMillin, Senator Blackburn and Hon. D.

B. Lucas were the orators. The Democratic speakers were guests of Senator Faulkner whilst in Martinsburg. Postmaster-General Wilson sailed from New York Wednesday for Europe. Mr.

Wilson did not take any of his family with him, and will only be gone about three weeks. He decided to take the trip for the sea voyage instead of spending his regular vacation at one of the summer resorts. He will return before September unless detained. Hon. Andrew Edmiston, of Weston, has been chosen chairman of the Democratic State Executive Committee.

An advisory campaign committee named by Chairman Edmiston is composed of Messrs. W. C. llandlan, John J. Davis, Ex-Governor Fleming, Henry Davis, Lawrence l'ierney, Col.

J. W. St. Clair, ExSenator J. N.

Gamden, Gen. John McCausland, Senator C. J. Faulkner and Governor W. A.

MacCorkle. We have just received from the music publishing house of The S. Brainard's Sons 151 Wabash I Chicago, a copy of the "Red Hot Democratic Campaign Songl Rook" for the campaign of 189C. At the BerkeleyDemocratic county -onvention, last the folowing ticket was nominated: For sheriff, John W. DoJd delegate to he Legislature, Moses Albright; prosecuting attorney, George W. 1 ohnson clerk of the County Court, George W. North; clerk of Circuit I Court, Capt. W.

15. Colston; county commissioner, James II. Fulk; assessor first district, Wm. T. McMillan; assessor second district, T.

Asliby Potts; county surveyor, C. P. C. Rinker. TheDemocraticJudicialConvention for this circuit was held at Berkeley Springs Tuesday and Judge E.

Boyd Faulkner was renominated by acclamation. Col. Forrest W. Brown presided and Hon. W.

II. Travers, in a complimentary speech, put Judge E. Boyd Faulkner in nomination. When notified of the action of the convention Judge Faulkner appeared and made a speech accepting the nomination and put himself in line with the gold-standard Democrats who were going to support Bryan and Setvall. Judge Faulkner will have no opposition from the Republicans, as they will not nominate a candidate for judge.

Judge Faulkner is one of the best judges this circuit has ever had, and the people of all classes and parties are desirous of retaining him in tiie position which lie so ablv fills. The Washington Slnr of Friday, under the caption of "one of the prettiest of home weddings," says: The marriage of Miss May Gordon and l)r. Chas. A. Schlaer of NewYork was solemnized at the residence of the bride, 121 street, last night.

The ceremony was performed by Dr. Naylor, of McKendrce M. K. Church. Promptly at 8 o'clock the happy bride entered the spacious parlors upon the arm of her brother, Mr.

The bride was handsomely attired in white silk, the waist "being low-necked, and her ornaments were diamonds, the gift of the "room. Immediately after the ceremony the couple received the congratulations of their friends, and after partaking of a bountiful collation left at 10 o'clock for Watkins Glen, where the honeymoon will be spent.
