SPIRIT OF JEFFERSON. Obaslxs iiniuoi Coduti, Va. TUESDAY MORNING, JULY 31.18SM. Congressional Convention. At a meeting of tbe Democratic Executive Committee of the 2nd district of West Virginin, held in Martinsburg on June 19, 1894, the committee fixed as a basis of representation one delegate for every fifty votes cast at the last presidential election, and no delegate for le9S than fifty, and fired tbe time August 29tb, at 10:80 A and Martinsburg the place for holding the convention to nominate a candidate for Congress from said district.

All Democratic Executive Committees of the respective counties composing the 2nd congressional district wilt lake tbe necessary action in sendin? delegates to the convention. Stuart W. Walker. Chairman, Josei-ji S. Bragoxier, Secretary.

Excursion trains will be run on all railroads at reduced rates for and all others attending the convention. Speakers of national reputation will be present. Senator Voorhces is ill. Chairman Wilson is reported much stronger. The West Virginia National Guard is encamped at Martinsburg.

Ex-Senator A. R. Unger aud Mr. rice W. Catlett are named as Senatorial aspirauts from Morgan county.

The President has sent to the Senate tbe nomination of Stephen W. Poe to be postmaster at Grafton, W. Va. Harrisonburg, lias elected a Democratic mayor, and five out ol (lie nine cotincilmen are aUo Democrats. The present council is Republican.

We are requested to announce that Judge D. B. Lucas will speak in Shepherdstown on Friday, August 3, at 2 P. and iu Charles Town on Saturday, August, 4, at same hour. A petition signed 2.COO employees of the government printing office in Washington, who represent that the building is unsafe, has been sent to the House and Senate committees on printing.

For the first time since the tariff fight begun Democratic Senators who have been steadfast is support of the compromise bill show signs of wavering and the House conferees believe the tide is turning in their favor. Governor Patlison, of Fennsyl- vania, has appointed Col. G. W. Z.

Black a delegate to assist (he Antictam battlefield commission in locating the position of Pennsylvania troops at the battle fought September 17th, 18C2. Tbe President's most important visitor Saturday morning, says the Star, was Representative Wilson of West Virginia. The two spent some time in conference, which unquestionably related to the disentangling of the tariff knot. The stables of the Kuox Express Company, in Washington, find over J50 horses were consumed by lire and the stable of the Adams Express Company nearly destroyed Wednesday morning, entailing a loss of $500,000, Three firemen were killed by a falling wall and several others injured. War been declared between China and Japan, and the King of Corea has been captured by the Japanese troops.

It is said that engagements have taken place between Jap- ancse and Cliiuese warships, in which the former have been successful. Marines have been sent from the United States cruiser Baltimore to protect the American legation at Seoul. The Marlinsburg World, in its notice of the recent game of base ball played here, said of our club: contest was nip and tuck between tbe two clubs, the Charles Town Club being far superior to our boys' expectations, and we can safrly say that the Charles Town boys are an honor to the city they represent. Our boys put up as fine a game as ever us far as the game went, but their opponents put up equally as good game. For the Charles Town boys wc cannot say too much, as they played as fine a game as any club our boys have struck this season." U.

8. Treasurer Daniel Nash Morgan called ou Col. Jno. T. Gibson a few days ago.

As an item of interest connected with his office we append a list of contents of the treasurer's vaults: $150,800,000 staudaid silver dollars. $5,470,000 gold coin. $230,000 fractional silver and minor coin. $.1,500,000 Natioual Bank Notes received for redemption. $1,000,000 mixed moneys icceived daily for redemption.

$1,000,000 mixed moneys for daily $250,000,000 bonds held as security for N. B. circulation, $304,021,129 held as reserve to replace worn and mutilated notes unfit ciieulation. Total treieUi co about 5,000 ns. that Order for Stock.

How a "Tout" in Wathimglon Hade Trouble for Mr. Camel Details of the Scheme. to tlio Wheeling Washington, July the Senate sugar investigation committee lias not completed its work nor made any report, it can he stated with positircness that the members have learned enough to convince them that the newspaper stories charging Senulor Camden with having speculated in Trust stock were made up of the vaguest hearsay that was ever used as a basis for an attack on the character of a public man. The slight importance which the investigating committee attached to the stories is shown by the fact that it never thought it worth while to recall Camden as a witness in the matter, although he was anxious to appear and meet the charges, if they were ever put in sufficiently tangible shape to be njet and refuted in detail. It appears that the nian who originally made the charges and.claimed to have had in his possession an order from the Senator to buy stock, was formerly employed a here in ft broker's office "lhc man bore anything but a savory reputation aud it is said before he disappeared from Washington, he checks 00 which the holders have not been able to collect the money, because there was no money in the banks on which they were drawn to meet thera.

The men who hold these checks are very anxious to have the missing man return to Washington. If does, they promise to see that he is provided with an extra new suit of striped clothing. 1 he investigating committee have unearthed a very interesting of the manner which this bucket-shop tool worked up business for his It appears that lie was given a commission on ail orders to or oeli stock which he brought During the excitement about thu sugar tariff, when there was a rag" for? "tip," from the Senate for use wm.n Street this man thom and tell them that Senator So-and-So had or 1 oon'ei 10 or 8L'" 500 oi snares of sugar stock Ho victim In Jnctim that Senator So-and-So ought to know what he was doing and hig money was to J)e roade by following the Senator's example. In this way the "tout" would order on which, the broker who paid him a commission. Sometimes when dealing with warv speculators the -'tout" would, it is and write out a bogus order to buy or sell stock to it the name of some pub' lic man, preferably the name of a Senator reputed to be wealthy his vi, 0rdtr3 to his victims to convince them that what he said was true and to in duce them to give him orders to buy n' Tilen: is litlle doulit Camrtllf 3 gGd Senator Camden was gotten up in this way and was intended to be used only a decoy to get business for Hie latter probably never dreamed that this sort of game he was playing was a species of forgery which might send him to the pemitentiary.

lien the sugar investigation came on and he discovered, where the posj-ession of these fake prtfprs and him.he disappeared, and the men into whose possession some of the orders fell, suspecting their real nature, destroyed them. These are the luside facts, it appears, as far as the investigators have been able to get at then). The School Problem Solved. "A parent never lias tp face graver problem than where to send his son, when for the boys own good he must get out of the home-nest, and yet not away from home-like care. No one-sided training will meet the pasc, but physical, intellectual, and moral powers must all be developed with patienco and skill in order to fit and balance him for success in life.

In the opinion of its friends there is no institution in the South that hae been more successful in this respect than 1-TSIIBUKNE SCHOOL of Waynesboro, Virginia. Past performance is its best promise. Its' catalogue contains many remarkable testimonials, and should be In Ike hands of everyone who is interested In selecting a school for boys. For catalogue write to A. Fishburne, A.

Waynesboro, Va." Great and sweeping reductions in all our departments at Kahn's, Sadler Building. The announcement of Mr. C. C. Conklyn for re-election to the office of tho Board of Education of Charles Town District, appears in another column.

Mr. Conklyn takes a very lively interest in public schools and has servidtue district in the above capacity with The present splendid graded school has baen established under his incumbency and it is a credit to the towu, the county and the district. CURES OTHERS To purify, enrich and vitalize the blood, and thereby invigorate the liver and digestive organs, brace up the nerves, and put the system in order generally, "Golden Medical Discovery" has no equal. DYSPEPSIA IN ITS WORST FORM. Ervin Dieteuly, of PaH writes: "Only those who have had dyspepsia in its worst forms know what it really can be.

What such a cose needs I have found in your kindly enaouragemcnt, and your Golden oal Although I can now claim, it any one can. that I have a cast Iron stomaoh. I always keep Medical I and the Pelyour piscoverr'and Iota on hand when settling down from ou I heartily recommend these meoioines to every one whose suffering is of the nature that mine was." Bold everywhere. WH NOT YOU? JUr. friend Morrow, the Advocate man, reminds ns of the story of the bull-on the railroad track.

The bull seeing the engine approaching, squared-himself to oppose it. The engineer, taking hold of the lever, remarked: ''My friend. I admire your xleplore your discretion." Morrow has been on the track bellowing, throwing mud and trying to obstruct the passage of the grandest engine of all Democratic old Grover as engineer and Billy Wilson as fireman. "Morrow contends that W. L.

Wilson has nothing to do with the light between Messrs. Clements and We reply that he has everything. Mr. ilson is Mr. Clevelaud on the floor, and since Mr.

Clements' hostility to both Mr. Cleveland and Wilson is known, his (Clements') election would he the greatest slap in the face Mr. Wilson ever received. It would be construed throughout the State and country that Wilson's own county repudiated him. The Advocate's excuse for Clements scratching Cleveland's name is on account of the President's views on silver.

Was not Mr. Clements as familiar with the President's views on subjept the time of his application for a position as he was in November, 181)2. There wero two applicants for Railroad Commissioner, Gen, Jos. E. Johnston and Capt.

W. M. Clements. Thp President selected the former. The latter scratched the Presidents namo.

Comments are unnecessary. Jefferson county Democrats have a reputation throughout the State that one should he proud of, nnd we mistake very much their temper If they encouroge such direct violation of parly rules and principles. Ills extremely doubtful whether, according to the rules of the County Executive Committee, his name can be put on the ticket or counted. The rules both National ond State ticket. The electors ore State nominatloni.

The Advocate canuot ttie issue or deny the fact that and his immediate followers? the ones who have the reputation of running hjs anti-administration. jj How's This!
