Tom Flores Flores named AFCs Coach of the Year NEW YORK (UPI) Tom Flores, whose Raiders coupled a 19S2 move to Los Angeles with a rise to the top of the AFC Western Division standings, Friday was named UPI's AFC Coach of the Year. Flores, who completed his fourth season with the Raiders, received 24 votes in balloting from 56 writers, four from each AFC city. The former Raiders' quarterback finished ahead of Miami's Don Shula, who had 16 votes. Walt Michaels of the New York Jets was third with 10 votes and Ron Meyer of New England fourth with four votes. In 1981, the Raiders suffered their first losing season (7-9) since 1964, but, under Flores, Los Angeles lost only one game in 1982's strike-shortened, nine- game season.

The only loss suffered by Flores and the Raiders, transplanted from Oakland, was against the Cincinnati Bengals. Los Angeles, which used a gritty defense and the versatility of rookie running back Marcus Allen, gained the home-field advantage throughout the expanded playoff format, beat Cleveland in a first-round game before being upset 17-14 by Michaels' Jets. In four years, Flores has a 35-22 regular-season record and a 5-1 playoff mark. Prior to the start of the season, Flores, 45, said, "We intend to meet the challenges of the 1982 season. Raider goals have been and always will be the highest.

We expect and demand a total commitment from everyone in the organization." Flores began his coaching career in 1971 as quarterback coach for the Buffalo Bills. In 1972, he returned to the Raiders as a receivers coach and during his seven seasons as an assistant, the Raiders were in the playoffs six times. The naming of Flores ended a three- year AFC Coach of the Year reign by the AFC Central Division. In 1981, Cincinnati's Forrest Gregg won the award, while Cleveland's Sam Rutigliano won it in 1979 and 1980. The Salina Journal Spartans seek victory No.

21 Marymount seeks victory No. 21 tonight when the Spartans entertain Benedictine in a 7:30 contest at Smoot Gymnasium. The Spartans, who claimed an 87-82 decision over the Ravens five weeks ago in Atchison, bring a 20-6 record into the contest. Marymount is coming off a 119-83 win over Baker Tuesday night. Benedictine, meanwhile, saw its record dip to 11-14 earlier this week when the Ravens were defeated by Avila, 75-52.

Saturday's game will be followed by a benefit basketball game between members of the Salina Optimist Club and Marymount's baseball team. Donations will go to the Easter Seals program. Saturday's game is also Optimist Night at Marymount. Any youngster who is a member of an Optimist summer baseball team will be admitted to Saturday's games if he wears an Optimist t- shirt or cap. Both the youngster and one parent will be admitted without charge.

KW cagers hit KCAC road DODGE CITY Kansas Wesleyan's men's and women's teams will meet St. Mary of the Plains in Kansas Conference basketball action here tonight. The Coyote men, fresh off a 7167 upset victory over Friends Thursday night, will be seeking their third win in four days in the 8 p.m. scheduled contest. Wesleyan, now 6-13, also captured a KCAC victory over McPherson Wednesday night.

St. Mary, meanwhile, has already dropped two outings this week as Panhandle State and Bethany knocked off the Cavaliers. Brad Bingesser and Russ Pleiman scored 19 points apiece to pace Wesleyan to an 83-71 win over the Cavs in a mid-January meeting between the two schools. KW's women will be in quest of their fifth straight triumph tonight. But the Coyotes, now U-8 overall, will have their hands full against St.

Mary, which is tied for first place in the KCAC. Tipoff for the women's game is 4p.m. 'Husker basketball gaining respect By RICK GOSSELIN UPI Sports Writer Nebraska has always been in the running for NCAA football supreme- cy but the same can't be said for the basketball Cornhuskers. Nebraska has won one national football championship and has finished with a Top 10 rating on 15 other occasions but the basketball Cornhuskers have never once been invited to play in Moe Iba the NCAA tournament in the 44-year history of the event. Nebraska has won 20 basketball games in a single season twice but its 20-5 record in.

1965-66 wasn't good enough to go anywhere and its 22-8 mark in 1977-78 was only good enough for an NIT berth. The Cornhuskers weren't afforded much of a chance of ending that NCAA drought in 1983, having been tabbed to finish sixth in the Big Eight in a preseason media poll. But Nebraska is a suprising 15-6 overall and shares second place in the conference along with preseason favorite Oklahoma with 6-3 records. Three of Nebraska's losses this season have come on the road to teams rated in the UPI Top 10 No. 1 Indiana, No.

8 Arkansas and No. 10 Missouri. "Everybody on the team has it (NCAA tournament) in the back of their mind," said Nebraska guard Greg Downing. "But our primary goal right now is to finish in the first- division and make it to Kansas City (for the conference tourney semifinals). Whatever happens after that happens." Nebraska trails front-running Missouri by two games and has a one- game lead over the fourth-place tan- dem of Iowa State and Oklahoma State.

The Cornhuskers have a favorable schedule for a first-division finish three of their remaining five games at home including today's encounter with Iowa State and an NCAA tournament bid could materialize. "I wouldn't count them out (of the NCAA's)," Nebraska coach Moe Iba said of his Cornhuskers. "They've already done some things I didn't think they could do. When we play within ourselves, we're a pretty good basketball team." In other games today, No. 10 Missouri is at No.

20 Oklahoma State, Oklahoma visits Kansas and Kansas State travels to Colorado. Missouri has beaten Oklahoma State the last nine times the two teams have met, including a 84-63 decision last month in Columbia. But the Tigers might have trouble keeping their mind on the Cowboys this time with a nationally-televised game against No. 5 Virginia on tap the following day at the New Jersey Meadowlands. Oklahoma has lost the last six times it has played at Kansas but the Jayhawks were never an underdog in those games.

Kansas will be this time, however, with its 9-13 overall record and last-place standing in the Big Eight at 1-8. The KU-OU game will be regionally-televised on NBC, beginning at 2:10 p.m. Kansas State has beaten Colorado 14 consecutive times, including a 6256 decision in January. But the young Wildcats, who have had four freshmen and a sophomore in the starting lineup of late, have had difficulty winning on the road this season with only two "ictories in nine tries. The game is scheduled to tip off at 9:05 p.m.

(MST). Blackledge decides to go pro UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (UPI) Penn State quarterback Todd Blackledge ended speculation by announcing Friday he will waive his last year of college eligibility and enter the NFL draft set for April. Blackledge, who led the Nittany Lions to the national championship, said he reached his decision about five days ago "after a great deal of thought and prayer." "At this point in my career I'm both mentally and physically prepared to play professional football," he said. "I've enjoyed a very sucessful year here at Penn State.

I can't say I've accomplished every goal I've set out to do, but I'm convinced at this time it's time to move on to new goals and challenges." Penn State Coach Joe Paterno said in a prepared statement he had told Blackledge "on many occasions he had absolutely no obligation to stay but was only obliged to do what would be best for him." During preparation for the Sugar Bowl, Blackledge said he was trying to get some idea of what NFL teams thought of him before making a decision. His father, Ron, the offensive line coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, kept his son posted. "My father had a lot to do with the information I received as far as my status in the NFL," Blackledge said. "He said from all that he has gathered, from all the people he has talked to, that more than likely I'll be a No. 1 draft choice." Blackledge, who would not name a specific team he would prefer, did describe what he would like in an NFL team.

"The ideal situation would be to be drafted by a team that already has an established quarterback, possibly an older player with just three or four years left to play," he said. "It would be best for me to get into a situation where there is not a lot of pressure to play." Although he started the season taking a back seat to more publicized quarterbacks such as John Elway of Stanford and Dan Marino of Pitt, Blackledge led the Lions to the national championship and a 10-1 regular season record by completing 161 of 292 passes (55 percent) for 2,218 yards and 22 touchdowns. In the Sugar Bowl, Blackledge completed 13 of 23 passes for 228 yards and the winning touchdown a 48-yard bomb to Gregg Garrity in the Lions' 27-23 win over Georgia. Walker jeopardizes college career ATHENS, Ga. (UPI) Heisman Trophy winner Herschel Walker has gravely jeopardized his final year of college eligibility by signing a contract with the New Jersey Generals of the United States Football League and then backing out of the deal, a newspaper reported Friday.

In a copyright story in its Saturday editions, the Boston Globe reported that according to two sources "close to the negotiations," Walker signed a $5 million contract Thursday night with an agreement that Walker he would have a 24-hour period of grace in which he could change his KU tabs two grid assistant coaches LAWRENCE (UPI) Two assistant coaches were added to the University of Kansas football staff, filling all of the full-time coaching positions, head coach Mike Goffried announced Friday. Mike Sheppard, 31, will work with the quarterbacks, while John Fox, 28, will be responsible for the defensive backs. Goffried said the latest additions to the staff leave only a recruiting coordinator and a ninth coach to be added in accordance with NCAA's legislation in August. "The addition of these two outstanding young coaches completes what I feel is already a top flight staff," Gottfried said. "Both coaches bring outstanding credentials and a history of success that will add to our program." Sheppard, a 1973 graduate of California Lutheran comes to the Jayhawks from Long Beach State, where he worked with the quarterbacks.

Last season, Long Beach led the nation in passing offense, He was an NAIA Ail-American wide receiver at Cal Lutheran. Before starting his career, Sheppard played one year of professional baseball. Fox comes to Kansas from Utah University, where he worked with the defensive secondary. Utah last season was the top ranked defense in the WAC and ranked 19th in the nation. The Globe's story, signed by Will McDonough, reported that after signing the contract, Walker left the meeting with J. Walter Duncan, owner of the Generals, apparently walked around the campus for two hours and then returned to say he had changed his mind and would stay at Georgia.

Walker admitted at a news conference earlier Friday that he had talked with the Generals, but insisted he "never saw a contract" and decided to play out his eligibility at Georgia. Officials at the Generals' training camp in Orlando, refused comment. Fort Hays had a substantial 31-18 lead going into the locker room, and although Pittsburg battled back in the second period, the Gorillas could get no closer than five.

Walker himself could not be reached Friday night to respond to the story.

Georgia coach Vince Dooley said he had asked Walker flatly if he had done anything to jeopardize his eligibility and Walker told him "No, absolutely not." "I just can't believe this is true," NCAA rules state that any player who signs a professional contract regardless of whether it is legal or enfor- cable automatically loses his eligibility. Thomas Hansen, assistant NCAA director, told UPI Friday that the "crux of the matter is whether the young man or woman makes a conscious effort to become a professional." Washburn slides by Western ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (UPI) Gary Carrier and Kurt Budke combined for 48 points Friday night to lead Washburn to a 61-52 Central States Intercollegiate Conference victory over Missouri Western. Washburn led throughout but really took control of the game with an 8-0 run late in the first half.

The Ichabods went from a 23-18 lead to a 31-18 bulge in that spurt as Carrier had six points to fuel the run. Missouri Western made an attmpet to get back in the game with an 8-0 run of its own during the second half, but that spurt just cut the lead to 42-35 and the Griffons could get no closer than those seven points the rest of the game. Carrier, who had 17 points in the first half, finished with 26 points. He was at the Pac 10 school for four years while Mackovic was an assistant for the Wildcats. Earlier Friday, Mackovic named Rod Humenuik, who for the past eight seasons was offensive line coach of the Cleveland Browns, to head the Chiefs' rushing offense and offensive line. Mackovic said Humenuik's specific responsibilities will include organizing game plans for the running game each week, as well as being in charge of all pass protection schemes. The Cougars qualified 11 individuals in nine events and both relay teams for Saturday's finals which begin at 9 a.m.

for diving and 1 p.m. for swimming. "We did pretty much what we wanted to do," a delighted Dick Rivera said after the prelims ended. "We have a great chance to win. We're pretty fired up." But the South head coach told his team to guard against overconfidence.

"What we talked about af our team meeting (after the prelims) was that we're in a great position," Rivera said, "but that we don't want to get cocky and overconfident." South is attempting to become the first small school since 1955 (Coffeyville won it that year) to win the state meet, which has been dominated by the Class 6A schools for the last 27 years. "A lot of schools have been afraid of the big schools, but we haven't been," Rivera said. The South coach said Shawnee Mission South and Wichita East will be the two teams which will give his Cougars the most trouble Saturday. East, however, didn't perform up to its usual standards in the prelims. Saturday's action will be divided into the championship finals (top six from prelims) and consolation finals (next six in prelims).

The scoring format is 16-13-12-11-10-9 for the top six and 7-5-43-2-1 in the bottom six. The Cougars have seven individuals and both relay teams in the championship finals and two individuals in the consolation finals. Shawnee Mission South has only three in the top six, but eight in the bottom six and a couple of good divers. "SM South qualified quite a few kids, but we have more kids in the top six and that means more points," Rivera said. Darren Oellien and Mark Moser set school records in the prelims.

Oellien was first in the 200-yard I.M. with a time of 1:58.501 seconds just four- tenths of a second off the state record. Oellien also was first in the 500-freestyle Moser was first in the 50-freestyle in 22.351 seconds. Salina Central failed to qualify any individuals or relay teams for the finals.

Ashford eclipsed her own record of 5.77 set earlier this year at a meet in Los Angeles. For the veteran sprinter, it marked the return to action that was slowed by an injury sustained in Dallas which forced her to scratch in San Francisco and a snow storm which washed out her scheduled appearance in New York. Ashford broke out even with the field in the first 15 yards but then turned on a burst of speed and pulled away from the field.
