(UPI) Jo Ann Washam battled rain, wind and darkness Thursday for a 5-under-par 67 to take the lead among those who were able to finish the first round of the $175,000 Safasota Classic. Washam finished her round eight minutes after LPGA officials suspended play because of darkness.

She had just hit her second shot on the final hole when the horn sounded. Players had the option of finishing the hole they were on and Washam did so. Sixty-nine players completed the round. The 63 caught on the course when play was suspended marked their balls and will resume the round this morning. The second round will begin when they finish.

Washam's 67 was three shots ahead of Alice Miller, who completed her round. Defending champion Beth Daniel was also five under with five holes still to play Friday. Three players finished play at one- under-par 71 Alice Ritzman, Donna White and Chris Johnson. Play was suspended for 2 hours and 52 minutes during the early afternoon as steady rain and strong winds raked the course and occasional lightning knifed across the sky. Washam had completed only three holes when the rain delay came and was one-under-par at the time.

After she resumed play, she added two more birdies on her front nine and had three birdies and a bogey on the second nine. "We ran from the 17th green to the 18th tee," Washam said. "We wanted to get it in. It will be good to sleep in in the morning instead of having to be out here for an 8:40 a.m. start.
