HOLLYWOOD FILMS AND STARS REVIEW Harry James to Be 'The Trumpet Man That Is, If Army Doesn't Call Him THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER. SATURDAY MORNING. AUGUST 14, 1943 a 2-4 Weather" Is fairly busting with talent, and Director Andrew Stone shows he knows exactly what to do with it. 'Stormy Weather' Opens Before Production Gets Under Way Central City Theatre Dunham with her dancers puts on some strikingly errective routines; and Miller and Lyles have a typically hilarious interlude. TS TA LEY I BUY S. JaRNER ComUvrtmhly MASTHALAI STANTON AIR- CONDITIONED? lOTU STANLEY FOX II I t-t PALACE VICTORIA I By Louella O. Parsons HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 13. I XL GIVE you three guesses! Who is the logical actor to star in iric Charrell's The Trumpet Man?" You should really only need one guess.

Harry James would be perfect, and he is under contract to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, the company that bought Charrell's original story. It's about a hot trumpeter whose orchestra is backed by five career girls. Well, it is all set for James, providing Uncle Sam doesn't have other ideas. Harry is in 1-A and if he is called before "The Trumpet Man" gets into production, well, some other actor will have to suf DEANNA JOSEPH DURBIN COTTEN fit Umiwmraml'a Heimr lier than ever visually; while vocally she does magical things with the haunting title song, "I Can't Give You Anything But "Diga, Diga Doo" and "There's No Two Ways About Love." Fats Waller pounds the piano and assisted by Ada Brown, gives his own "Ain't Misbehavin' just the sort of lusty treatment it demands. And Cab Calloway, in a zoot suit to end zoot suits, and with his band, rocks the rafters with "Geechy Joe" and "Jumpin Jive." OTHER PERFORMERS Dooley Wilson doesn't get a chance to sing, but he makes the most of a robust comedy role.

The Nicholas Brothers surpass them- ARCADIA fc CHtlTNUTMfth mm V101NIA WttDtM DWA1D ARNOLD Bll fice with the trumpet-playing duDDea m. The more I see James the better I like him. He is such a darned good sport about coming to the Hollywood Canteen every week and playing for the boys. By Mildred Martin Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer revived production of all-Negro screen musicals with "Cabin the Sky." And now 20th Century-Fox has swung into line with "Stormy Weather," a far funnier, more ingratiating and robust show that makes excellent use of such topflight entertainers as the beloved Bill Robinson, sultry-voiced Lena Home, Fats Waller, irrepressible Cab Calloway, the Nicholas Brothers and hosts of other talented folk. PLOT DOESN'T MATTER Plot doesn't matter a hoot in this lively, likable picture which bounced onto the Fox screen yesterday.

For the sketchy story, a fictionalized biography of the great "Bojangles" and his rise in show business is Just background for songs, dances, comedy skits, jive and nicely staged production numbers. 'Virtually untouched by time, neither looking nor acting nor dancing like a 65-year-old, beaming little Robinson is as nimble as ever. He taps and shuffles, does a staircase dance and puts on an astounding drum routine, leaping from drum to drum with the dexterity of a youngster. As the gal he loves, Lena is love LAS DAI LAST MM aBir DAY HI-MII UHbk wh CHARLES WTNNINGER Evelyn Ankers Gus Schilling Hella Walker SmP" rf ((( WAIHOmi MAIN AT AU STANUT-WAgNf THEATKfS DOORS OFIN 10 43 A M. A week ago Maxine Fife was ushering1 customers to their seats at the Fox Wilshire Theater. Bill Meiklejohn, Paramount's casting director, was one of those ushered. He asked Maxine "How would you like to be in pictures?" He told her to come over to the studio, which she did, and she was given the role of Emily Kimbrough's classmate in "Our Hearts Were Young and Gay." Yes, it sometimes happens in Hollywood that these Cinderella stories do come true but don't count on it too often. In 24 hours flat "Dangerous Journey" was readied for the screen with Elsa Lanchester (Mrs.

Charles Laughton on her calling cards) in the starring role. The reason for R. K. big hurry is that the story is about a cockney scrubwoman who goes to Berlin to kill Hitler. With the rapid turn in world events, Herman Schlom, the producer, thought he had better get the movie going before it is officially announced that Hitler's out on his ear.

Ray McCarey, the director, is doing a hurry call on the other actors. Talked with Major Ben Lyon over the long-distance telephone. He wrote me two months ago that he expected to be sent to this country, but asked me not to say anything about it. Now Ben is in Washington on a special mission, but is not at all sure he will get to Hollywood. If he cannot get away, Mrs.

Phyllis Daniels and Barbara Bebe and young Richard, the two Lyon children, will go to Washington to meet him. Ben hasn't seen his children for over two years. Some of the movie folk who T.ave been in London tell me that anyone need say to a taxi driver in is: "Take me to Bebe and WW LENA HORNE BILL ROBINSON CAB CALLOWAY and his BAND MTUINE IHHia 11. BRING YOUR COPPER. BRONZE AND BRASS TO YOUR LOCAL THEATRE FOR FREE ADMISSION Marguvrit CHAPMAN Onslow Chatter in Hollywood: Lou Costello has always had a bee in his bonnet to direct, and Sam Katzman of Monogram is giving him that chance in October.

He will megaphone a movie starring the two former "Dead End" kids, Leo Gorcey and Huntz Hall, and he'll do it before "Harem Scare 'Em." To avoid any contractual legal difficulties, Lou will use his own name, Louis Cris-tillo. His restlessness is understandable, but I wonder if he will be well enough to go through the worries of direction. However, his partner and pal, Bud Abbott, will stand by to lend a hand. A line or two: Greer Garson telephoned to say au revoir. She and Nina, her mother, are going to Pebble Beach for two and one-half weeks.

She told me she had decided against even making a test for "Jade," although she was so sold on it a few weeks ago, because she feels she must rest before making another picture Zoe Akins has written a story for Billie Burke, which will. be produced on Broadway this fall Helena Sorell, who handles all the talent presentation on the R. K. O. lot, is getting "Dough-girls" ready as a showcase for the youngsters Well, Jean Heather is the name for Jean Hetherington and I've named a second star.

The other was Mary Astor, whose real moniker was Lucille Langhanke. Snapshots of Hollywood at random: Patricia Morison turning on the charm at the Trocadero for Howard Fast, author of the best seller, "Citizen Tom Paine" Kurt Siodmak, who writes most of Hollywood's horror pictures, gets his final citizenship papers Mrs. Fred Kohler, presented her husband with a seven and one-half pound baby boy.
